Using the Wiki would be a good choice.

End of the year mainly with bug fixes and updated versions (also
kernel...).

Just my 2 cents...

I wonder why those changes were made then.

I only synced CVS with the contents of the stable part of kernels.zip in FD 1.0,
nothing else, to reduce confusion.

No.

well most of these are in kernels.zip, but I suggest that
you run "cvs diff" on your code (or diff with kernels.zip)
to figure that out yourself...

DIVT just demonstrates the bug.

Yes, it wasn't fixed, because nobody seems to be interested in VP386.

Hi Robert,

I don't quite understand what you said: vp386 still has the bug? So divt
is a loader program? Does it affect only debug or anything after using
it (or loaded in TSR)?

And: if the source is available, wasn't the bug fixed?

What about Avery Lee's http://www.bttr-software.de/vp386/ from my page?
I'm still looking for a maintainer as I don't have enough time or C

Of course, the annoying "destroy interrupt vector table" bug has to be
fixed in a new release. (see http://www.bttr-software.de/divt/)

[Freedos-devel] free paint and file manager dos navigator for the distro

2006-11-01 Thread Eric Auer

Hi all, Caesar repeatedly asked me to recommend a few
useful programs for our distro. I agree that those
programs are useful and have a suitable license as well:

First, a MCGA (320x200, 256 colors) paint program:
http://www.geocities.com/yotam_madem_software/ writes
"Y.M.S Software is written in Turbo Pascal 7.0 (Borland)
In this site you'll find all my programs and their
source code! Have a good time!" The download page is:
http://www.programmersheaven.com/download/48192/download.aspx
(uploaded 1998, download size 0.4 MB)
Caesar noticed that our distro does not contain any paint
program at all, which we should certainly fix. Another
nice software is "cadkey light 7 freeware". The license of
that CADKEY version is "you may freely copy it in the
German language area" (it contains English and German
messages), from 1995, made freeware around 1997. But CADKEY
is (emm386-incompatible by design) CAD, and we want a PAINT.

Second, for all those Norton Commander fans out there, it
would be very nice if we could add DOS NAVIGATOR, for example
the version NDN, Necromancer's Dos Navigator. Originally from
RITlabs (1991-1999), it is now open source. Classic open version
is on http://www.ritlabs.com/dn/index.html/ Necromancer version
with editor, LFN support, and more is (probably?) on
http://ndn.muxe.com/index.php/ and the Dos Navigator Open Source
Project is on http://www.dnosp.com/e_index.php (DN design ;-)).

As DN comes in a RAR: I think UNrar is freeware, can we include it?

DOS DPMI version of DN: http://dnosp.com/files/dnosp/dn640d.rar
http://dnosp.com/files/dnosp/dn640p.rar
Real mode DOS version: http://dnosp.com/files/dnosp/dn640r.rar
Sources: http://dnosp.com/files/dnosp/dn640s.rar
LFN API bridge to WinNT/XP/2k: http://dnosp.com/files/lfnnt.zip
The dnosp page also provides several other useful utilities.

Talking about adding things to the distro, we should have a
directory "zips of updated packages since 1.0" and the distro
should definitely have some easy way in the installer to
install without internet connection. DOS computers often have
no internet connection! The LIVECD mode of the cdrom should
branch from the INSTALL mode only at the moment before setup
bat is called: It is quite annoying that the LIVECD only has
ONE cdrom driver while the INSTALL has THREE of them...
See also:

http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdInstall
and the package dependencies list linked from there - with the
dependencies info, you can deselect those packages which require
internet during/after install, which helps to install fast and
without internet. You can still use fdpkg to install the other
packages later, when you have time for internet configuration...

Questions are:
- can we add unrar?
- will we add PAINT or are there better paint programs?
- which version of DOS NAVIGATOR will we add?
- were will the "updated packages" download area be?
- what is the roadmap for FreeDOS 1.1 release?
- how can the cdrom driver / package selection be fixed for
people who already have the fullcd, without full new download?

Comments are welcome... Thanks!

Eric
