Re: [Freedos-devel] ideas about FreeDOS resident calculator

2007-04-07 Thread Tony
Since the source is freely available (given its license) why not just add the
parts you need to a library (obviously minus startup and resident code) and use
the equivalent of DOS DLL files (the wonderful world of overlays) or just link
it in.

Then you can add the portions of this program are part of the FDRC published
under the ... license.

FDRC is nice and comfortable. But you could go further. Now is the TSR module
called by hotkey.
What about making a alternate interface through some interrupt?
Now FDRC serves to users but if you would make some API let's say on 2Fh DOS
multiplex it could serve to programmers also.
I would like to implement into Bloček a calculator. I could, of course, make
own interface and own "brain" but if I could use some function from FDRC,
something like [ES:DI=pointer to math expression, AX=h, INT2Fh -->
EAX=computed value] it would be great and very interresting from the technical
point of view.
This all is needed because Bloček works in VESA graphics mode so the dialog
window of FDRC can't be displayed.

[Freedos-devel] FreeDOS and WfW 3.11

2007-04-07 Thread Tony
I was bored so I tried FreeDOS 1.0 and WfW 3.11.

Setup installed fine (in VirtualPC 2K4) totally trashed in VMWare...

Reboot, attempt to load WfW, get an error message that WfW can't run because
some protected mode application is running that I need to kill. Hmmm, so I look
in the Windows directory and see that HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE are there. So I
create a totally different FDCONFIG.SYS using what MS adds (IFSHLP.SYS) and
include HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. Interestingly enough, MS-DOS HIMEM.SYS works
fine. EMM386 appeared to load, but when I used the famous DOS=HIGH,UMB there
was a 'kernel panic'.

Not to be deterred, I switched to the EMM386.EXE in the FDOS\BIN directory. No
high memory but so what, let's start WfW.

No problem...cold hang...

I'll crack out the debugger when I get back from Cali. If someone else wants to
take a stab at it, I can give you an ISO with WfW 3.11 on it.

NDN crash on some weird video mode, my office NetVista will cause a
reboot.

Despite this, NDN is very good.

I wonder nowadays display card still have support of VESA or not.

UNIVBE refuse to work long ago, and other free VESA drivers stopped
also.

I used DOS just fine for years without any type of NC...

I still feel it's a nice feature but not absolutely necessary as I can do
everything I need from the command line. There's always the FreeGEM
desktop, that's partially derived from the DR DOS shell.

Re: [Freedos-devel] File manager

2007-04-07 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

I have 2 favourite file managers:

NDN - file managers with most features
FW - file wizard, also very good and much faster than NDN.

I would prefer FW in FreeDOS (and it is also open source!). I uploaded
source and binary to
http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.FileManagers

(btw: There is also GVFM which is a _graphical_ file manager. )

bye

[Freedos-devel] File manager

I would like to ask: which file manager is preffered for FreeDOS distributions?
I think it is very important thing - nobody will use DOS without any NC clone.
And it is stupid to not have such thing on the distribution CD/diskette.
Maybe Necromancer's DOS Navigator? It is GNU but it doesn't indorse FreeDOS.
Does it matter if it doesn't declare as a part of FreeDOS.
