Just a bit of FYI despite the project being nowhere near ready to go as of yet: there is a small group of us working on moving DOS into the 32-bit realm in the form of the [Night Kernel](https://groups.google.com/g/night-dos-kernel). As part of that journey, we eventually want a compatibility layer to make running Windows 3.x executables possible. Hi Eric, The ReactOS/Wine combo was what got me thinking in the first place. ReactOS was from the start meant to replicate WIndows NT though, which isn't quite what I had in mind, as that isn't quite the 16 bit world in which FreeDOS exists. Wine would be a starting point, as that definitely has 16 bit remnants, like WING. Back many moons ago I used some of that source to port Microprose's Grand Prix manager to SDL under Linux. [Freedos-devel] New packages for future releases
Ho,ho, everybody, First of all, merry holidays to all and I hope you're all safe in these difficult times. As the new year looms, it's time to get them new years resolutions in. I'm foregoing the usual stuff, like losing weight, because that won't work, just like the other years. Instead, inspired by #DOScember, I got back into DOS programming and I started to port some of my old early 90s projects from PASCAL to C and/or assembler. So here's the question: Is there a process to pitch new packages for possible inclusion in future releases? At the moment I'm porting my old textmode font utils, which are in a way comparable to the existing gnuchcp package, but go beyond that. The fontloader can load two fonts and enable the VGA 512 char mode and it also loads fixed-width X11 bdf and pcf fonts. They also include a font editor that runs in text mode. The second question is a more speculative one. FreeDos is doing an excellent job of running legacy software, and I think other than adding more hardware support, it is pretty much as good as it gets. Which got me thinking. Windows 3.11 has tons of legacy software, so there's me wondering: a) Has there ever been an attempt at creating a FreeWin? b) Knowing that Jim dislikes it with a passion, would there even be interest in it?
