Re: [Freedos-user] MEMA / MEM /EMM386 error
(Jim, webmail archive is outdating again!) hi Matthias, no, message was supposed to go to Michael Devore and Arkady V Belousov. for Arkady's mail however, I accidentally copied the freedos-user mail-address instead of his address. Michael Devore is helping out Tom Ehlert bigtime for the EMM386 program. Vmware pc emulator has a requirement for excluding EF00-EFFF from scanned UMB space. No idea why, but I found out and it's also documented on their support knowledgebase. I suggested adding code to detect Vmware into EMM386 for this (Vmware uses a magic number in some register) [http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/] however it will be up to the EMM386/HIMEM maintainer to decide, as Michael suggested. I just still have mail Tom Ehlert about this. http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/backdoor.html#top Bernd --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies. [Freedos-user] some questions about freedos with a xt
hi i tried to use freedos with one of my old pc's wich is a "daig&lauer 2in1". dont know if it is known outside of germany, but here it was used quiet often as pc for "drugstores". it has a 8088 with 640kb ram and a 40 meg mfm-drive. some little problems i have with this items : - if i use "dir" it shows me the directory and then "hangs" for approx 30 seconds till it shows the last line. (on dos4.0 wich was earlyer it didnt had the behavior). - chkdsk takes 17 minutes.. (dos took 1:31min) - mema just dont output annything.. no error, too.. just a free line and then back to the prompt. (what can i use to show the free memory) - the tree comando also works extemly slow - the "net" (from the ms tools) command hangs the pc, (with ms-dos no problems) i installed dos 6.22 later after freedos again to check if maybe my hardware is bustes, but with 6.22 everything works well again. i post that here not to say that ms-dos is better, just curious why freedos behaves this way (so slow). on my other pc's freedos just runs fine. i think its probalby not importand since who is really using a pc/xt in this days ? was just curious. tassilo -- /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign \ / No proprietary formats in attachments without request X i.e. *NO* WORD, POWERPOINT or EXCEL documents / \ Respect Open Standards --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies.
