That's interesting, because you showed me that X: contains all the
correct folders. GEMVDI is inside one of those folders, and it should
therefore run correctly. Let's do some testing.

First of all, are you using FreeDOS? What version?

Your English is fine!

[Freedos-user] OpenGEM 6 Development 2

2006-03-13 Thread Shane M. Coughlan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hello all

Some news for people who are waiting for the next major release of OpenGEM.

"Huh?" Some people scratch their head. "Are you talking about the new
multi-tasking OpenGEM/XM experimental code?"

No. I'm not. The experimental OpenGEM/XM code is experimental. It's
not going to be ready for general use for a while. The next major
release of OpenGEM will be single-tasking, and will be building on
OpenGEM 5. In other words, it'll be small, stable, and designed for
easy use.

OpenGEM 6 will bring some new features to the OpenGEM world. It's going
to have support for HP deskjet printers and postscript printers
"out-of-the-box", and work is underway to introduce a new package
management system to make it easy to install and remove GEM applications.

The newest development version of OpenGEM 6 is now online here:
http://gem.shaneland.co.uk/downloads/OpenGEM6Dev2.zip

It will be active at this link for at least seven days (until 20:00 GMT,
March 20th).

It has one big change from previous OpenGEM versions. There is a highly
experimental new feature to put OpenGEM into only one folder on your C:\
drive. To do this, you get one folder (OPENGEM) and one file (GEM.BAT)
in your C:\ root. When you run GEM.BAT it SUBSTs the OPENGEM folder to
the imaginary drive O:. This feature may or may not make it into the
final shipping version. Testing and feedback is requested.

Regards

Shane

[Freedos-user] Instructions for making USB key bootable. . .

2006-03-13 Thread TechFan
I saw a thread go around earlier about using a bootable USB key. Did
that get polished or handled? I have an extra USB key to play with, but
I would like to make it bootable. . .getting tired of using the very
slow usb floppy drive to boot our ghosting process.

Thanks.

RE: [Freedos-user] Newbie: How do I make a FreeDOS bootable CD?

2006-03-13 Thread usul
Well I just got one to work. (I had lots of problems with the freedos
bootable install cd).

What I did:
Created a floppy disk from the floppy image freedos provides.
Modified the files to include the appropriate dos cd drivers.

Then using a windows cd burning program (in my case nero)
I told the wizard to include they floppy's bootable image
And included on the cd everything else I could find for dos.

Stuck it in booted from cdrom and it worked. :)

What you could do is something similar (if the file won't fit on the floppy)
Is do something similar to what I did.
Include the file on the cdrom that you want to run.

Before you start the enter the command to run your program in the
autoexec.bat file

i.e.
if the file wont fit on the floppy
assuming the drive letter you assign to your cdrom is D
add this line to your autoexec.bat
d:\path\program.exe any arguments that

if the file will fit on the floppy
just copy it to the floppy before you create the bootable cdrom
add this line to your autoexec.bat

Hope this helps, its kinda cheap but it works.

I saw a thread go around earlier about using a bootable USB key. Did
that get polished or handled? I have an extra USB key to play with, but

Polished? Probably not, but the current kernel with FORMAT seem to work
for everybody who has a USB stick and a computer which supports USB stick
booting. There was one recent kernel bugfix made for computers which
weirded-out with no floppies present, but that's about it.

Anyway, there are several ways to get there. I typically use a formatted
USB stick recognized via USBASPI.SYS at bootup and then SYS it to make it
bootable. Several methods to format the stick if that's not already done,
but it usually comes that way.

My own issue is that I can create a stick which either boots as a big
floppy (A: via USB-ZIP) or a hard drive (C: via USB-HDD), but I can't seem
to switch back and forth between the two types after I'm done. I've not
had time to investigate what's necessary to change to go between them. But
for most users it probably doesn't matter once they get successful obots,
so I've not been pushing hard to make the time, either.
