Re: [Freedos-user] DOS GUI opinions

2006-06-12 Thread John Hupp
I couldn't tell from the screen shots or descriptions if the oZone desktop
currently supports creating long names for program items. I would like the
program manager to display "Flight Of The Amazon Queen", for instance, and
not just FOTAQ.

A very cool GUI is oZone ;-)) It includes a file manager (navigator)
and is a "modern" GUI with Skin support. Feedback is welcome everytime ;-)

I am using as HTML/Help viewer in DOS. The GUI is very good for a
browser, but not so good for a general GUI.

Based on your other message and this one; I never got around to writing
the FAT32 boot sector, so at the moment MS/PC DOS are only supported by
FD sys for FAT12 and FAT16 hence your problems.

OK, this time it found the MS-DOS boot sector on the floppy and said
something like "MS boot sector not supported":(

I recompiled both the lib and the interpreter in 32 bit
protected mode. I raised the stack to 128k for the
interpreter, and it's (hopefully) working now. Looks like it
does nothing, but it creates an output file, so I think it's
working :)

Thanks for your help!

First, don't forget to use Large memory model. Second, increasing stack
should help. Third, there is successful experience in compiling Lua for DOS
and running in it some examples from its TEST directory. This was achieved
by Mat Nieuwenhoven. If you wish, I resend you his makefiles. Unfortunately,
I not hear about complete success in DOS/16 version - probably, Lua sources
should be reviewed for bug-haunting.

[Freedos-user] Best PDF provision

2006-06-12 Thread John Hupp
Anyone viewing PDF files *with images* under FreeDOS?

I understand that some implementation of Ghostscript is the way to go, but
so far I haven't been able to get it to work.

I also understand that there are a couple of Ghostscript GUI's for DOS
(PSView/PS_View and one other usually mentioned second), but these rely on a
working command-line installation.

Aladdin/GNU Ghostscript v5.10 is supposed to be outdated in some respect
(video support?) and I have failed with it so far. There is more than one
v7.05 distro out there, at least some of which are not complete but rely on
a basic installation from elsewhere. Documentation seems inadequate, and in
any case, I haven't succeeded with it yet.

There are Arachne users who have some information, but so far I have not
been able to bring it all together right. And besides, they may not be
using FreeDOS. (I eventually want to be able to open PDF's with Arachne,
but perhaps the best Arachne plug-in, which I do not yet know by name,
relies on a working Ghostscript installation.)

SO, it would be nice if a FreeDOS user said "Go here, download this, unzip
it there, and use this syntax to load a PDF. And then for PS_View, go here
..."

Hmmm... I compiled the basic interpreter (min.c) as a
standard (real-mode) DOS program. If I run it without any
parameters, it shows the help. But when I try to run the
hello.lua script (the basic "Hello World!" script), the
interpreter only shows "Stack overflow!". What is the
problem? Do I need to modify the "Stack:" in the linker
options (I'm using the Open Watcom IDE)?
