[Freedos-user] FRISK Software stops development of F-Prot Antivirus for DOS

2006-07-03 Thread Robert Riebisch
Hi!

It seems, that FRISK Software has stopped further development of the DOS
version of F-Prot Antivirus. File 316F.NEW reads: "3.16f is expected to
be the last version of the DOS scanner."

Florian: can you send me a better English translation off-list? This
should probably get added to the "FreeDOS in the News" section on the site.

1. You should have Windows (XP - not XL) installed on FAT partition or you
should have separate FAT partition, if Windows installed on partitions with

which allows to read files from NTFS partition).

2. After installing both OS (Windows/DOS, Windows/Linux, DOS/Linux, etc),
you should install boot manager, which will allow you to select, which OS to
boot. Windows XP contains own boot manager, so you may use it.

3. Or, you may run DOS programs directly inside Windows XP, which have DOS 5
emulator.

4. Or, you may install machine emulator (VMWare, Boch, QEMU, etc), which
allows you to run multiple different OSes (including FreeDOS) inside other
OSes (including Windows XP).

EL> This new lap top has a "dual-processor" in it. So is

No. _Multi-processor_ is _not_ the same as _multi-machine_. Multiple
processors may be only reused by OS, which knows what is multiprocessing and
how to use it - but all these resources remains owned only by this OS.

There are (at least) three ways to dual boot WindowsXP and FreeDOS. The
new WindowsXP machines I have purchased (or gotten through work) have
WindowsXP preinstalled on an NTFS partition. It is possible to shrink
the NTFS partition, create a new FAT32 partition, install FreeDOS on the
new partition, and use a boot manager to select WindowsXP or FreeDOS.
This doesn't require re-installing WindowsXP and FreeDOS is in its
own separate partition. For fairly complete directions, see
http://odin.fdos.org/dual/, fdinst091.pdf. If you have
any questions, send me an e-mail.

This is what I do to all of my machines.

If WindowsXP is installed on a FAT32 partition, you can use the FreeDOS
installer to put FreeDOS on the same partition as WindowsXP and use the
Windows boot manager (I think) to select it or Windows. If you don't
have WindowsXP on a FAT32 partition, you would have to convert the
partition somehow or reinstall WindowsXP. Again, the new machines
I have run into have WindowsXP on an NTFS partition.

The approved Microsoft method is basically a third way.
They suggest repartitioning the disk (destroying the WindowsXP
installation), installing FreeDOS, then re-installing WindowsXP.
See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multiboot.mspx

To use this method:
> If you have already installed Windows, and you have only one
> partition, you must reformat and partition your hard drive before you
> can multiboot.

How can we help you get your dual boot machine set up?

An excellent FreeDOS 2.0 goal, so that no one need feel complacent or that
all the good stuff has already been done in 1.0.

Well ... As a habit, people will use the old PC for DOS, but we're
trying to catch up and show them even latest PC can run DOS, Jack

I think a "easy to use" package of "DOS + network + applications" are

Of course, I like F-PROT, small and powerful.
Clam have no official for DOS (DOS version port by Blair Campbell,
