I figured that ISOLinux might be the culprit since PART was detecting that something was different while the BIOS's detection code wasn't. And you may be right about it being a PART bug. I don't even know how widely used PART was; it may be rare. The reason that I included it in my report is that it seemed like a good example of the kind of messy interactions (with other pgms) that FreeDOS is likely to encounter once 1.0 is released. Who knows what kind of software is out there that FreeDOS will conflict with - bad BIOSs, anti-virus scanners, boot managers, compression schemes, etc.? I'm hoping to *help* eliminate some potential problems by providing examples of some of the risks of asking FreeDOS to do things which the BIOS can do for itself (e.g. reboot, detect hdds, etc.). Maybe by reducing some of the risky tasks FreeDOS does, we can reduce the number of times that FreeDOS will be blamed for things which are not its fault. -Eddie - Using Tomcat but need to do more? [Freedos-user] Is Freedos a good OS?
I have a Dell laptop, with a P3 500MHz processor, and 512 MB ram, but the display is broken. The computer still works, so I want to do something with it. Then I came up with this (crazy?) idea of integrating it into a portable stereo that I have pulled apart, and making this stereo a MP3 player. I know how I want to implement the motherboard to the stereo (I think). My question to you all: is freedos a good OS to use in this situation? I want quick start-up and shut-down times, and I understand DOS does. Almost immediate. I plan on removing all unnecessary parts of the laptop, which are the screen (obvious, as it is broken), and the mouse, and keyboard(?). Can freedos run without the keyboard? For controls, I am thinking of using the serial port with a 4X4 keypad or something like that. I know the basics of programming in C++, and think that I can implement the serial port, and have it command the MP3 player. Maybe some automatic start-up, or something. As I am basically new to the world of DOS, how easy is it to adapt the sound card driver from Win98 to DOS? I now await your thoughts, comments, and ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Freedos-user] Problems to download
Hi! After getting the same error here, I used another FTP client, and got the error message that anonymous access to the FTP server (which will normally work, so you do not need any username or password) has reached the maximum 400 simultaneous users already. So we will have to try again at some less busy time of the day, that should solve the problem :-). But, as we are already talking about servers for FreeDOS 1.0, I would suggest that people who want to provide mirror space on their own web servers or ftp servers should contact us now :-). When we have the final version of FreeDOS 1.0 ready, it would be nice if people would have the choice between several servers for downloading it. Eric Hello.
