[Freedos-user] Installing windows 98 within dos
Hi, I have freedos running. I have a directory with the installation files for windows 98. When I run the windows 98 setup program, it complains that windows 98 requires at least 16MB of memory. This is the output of the mem command: Memory TypeTotal Used Free Conventional 639K61K 578K Upper 16K15K 1K Reserved 369K 369K 0K Extended (XMS)261,048K26,085K 234,963K Total memory 262,072K26,530K 235,542K Total under 1 MB 655K76K 579K Total Expanded (EMS) 32M (33,554,432 bytes) Free Expanded (EMS)32M (33,521,664 bytes) Largest executable program size 574K (587,600 bytes) Largest free upper memory block 1K (672 bytes) FreeDOS is resident in the high memory area. Re: [Freedos-user] Installing windows 98 within dos
Alex Nu schreef: I'm new to the list, and I just saw a similar question before. So I guess, I'll just add the following: I don't care if windows 98 replaces freedos while installing. Actually, I installed freedos, so that I can install windows98. SETUP /NM /IS ( NoMachine checking , IgnoreScandisk) Later on the Windows install program might or might not tolerate the FreeDOS kernel, shell and programs. If installing win98, try a clean (f5, no drivers) FreeDOS bootup. No XMS driver will have been loaded then but win98 has the good old 'xmsmmgr.exe' commandline XMS driver which can install itself at runtime. Re: [Freedos-user] Partitions freedos can boot from
In relation to my partition problem on the Pentium 3 Gateway. I reinstalled linux in rescue mode and the reinstall oof grub recognized that freedos was there in the logical partition but I still could not get it to boot - still had the error 12. Since I really did not have anything critical on the linux install I redid the linux install entirely on my second primary partition and reformatted the first primary partition as a fat 32 and put freedos on it and it boots just fine. So i have still not determined wether freedos can boot from a logical partition using grub. my advice, based on this experience, for anyone setting up a new system is to make a primary fat partition for freedos. ~~~ Bonnie Dalzell, MA mail:5100 Hydes Rd Hydes MD USA 21082-EMAIL:[EMAIL PROTECTED] freelance anatomist, vertebrate paleontologist, writer, illustrator, dog breeder, computer nerd iconoclast...
