[Freedos-user] Sector read-writes.

2008-12-11 Thread kurt godel
Was following this thread. Dowloaded findpart; according to the readme,
"type findpart followed by the name of
the utility, say, getsect or putsect, to get the usage. It worked with
getsect, but with putsect, it said "bad disk #".
Also worked with some, not all of the other utilities. Now I wonder if the
programs(this happened with both of the
dos only versions) are corrupted. I'm just not in the mood to do the obvious
and read write a sector and possibly
bust the whole system, as it is running smoothly right now. I will wait
until some malware finds its way into the
windows half of the machine(usually about once a month) neccesitating the
next reinstall! kurt,.

Could please change "Primary-site" or "Original-site" to

Is it really under the GNU GPL? You must have a different version than
what you link to. There's a REGISTER.TXT file that indicates this is
something like shareware. No notice of GNU GPL that I could find.

I even compared against the version from http://lrsp.narod.ru/English/index.html

[Freedos-user] kernel.sys; command.com - debug versions?

2008-12-11 Thread Michael Reichenbach
Having kernel.sys and command.com are the most minimal way to start
FreeDOS I know.

I've successfully managed to find a configurations of parameters where
FreeDOS is crashing before I can use the command prompt.

The reason for the freeze couldn't be detected just by describing the
parameters (old thread on mailing list). It can be only reproduced using
the same parameters (a lot effort).

Long story... Do you have a debug version of kernel.sys and command.com?
Versions of these files which will dump as much as internal details as
possible. Perhaps when I paste the results the bug can be found and fixed.

If DOSLFN is loaded without error, any program that supports LFN will
support it.

With 4DOS use
Win95LFN=Yes

If you are using FreeDOS's Freecom then you can use
dir /LFN
But I think that it doesn't support more LFN features...

Re: [Freedos-user] command line sector read and write tool?

2008-12-11 Thread Travis Siegel
If copying raw sector information is all you're after, then you can
use rawrite, I used it many times to write out boot disks for booting
linux file systems.
I don't know of a dd version for dos (thought I'd used one, but it
wasn't dd), though it shouldn't be difficult to make one.
Don't know if this helps or not, but hope it at least offers another
option.

That gets me:

Was that to be expected? I don't see any change in LFN access.

That is a very small "total RAM" (611k) Either you load some
driver before DOS (e.g. LBA helper for big HDD on old BIOS)
or you have a virus loaded before DOS or you have a driver or
virus inside DOS which allocates RAM by reducing the "total".

In this version, LBACACHE uses TUNS, but the stack is small.
I assume this is not the current version of LBACACHE yet ;-)

> Conventional 639K37K 602K

Note that this other (newer) mainboard leaves less space
for DOS upper memory. On the other hand, 639k total is a
very normal value: It typically means 640k minus 1k for
extra BIOS data area. Extra as opposed to 40:xx (0.25k).

FreeDOS FDISK is quite scriptable, that might help.
And if you say it is too buggy: The maintainer is

If the sectors are inside a FAT filesystem, you can
not use FDISK, but maybe I can help you to select

Re: [Freedos-user] command line sector read and write tool?

2008-12-11 Thread Eric Auer

Hi!

Of course there are DOS versions of DD, as for many
GNU tools, for example on www.delorie.com - however,
there is a misunderstanding: DD alone does not help
you editing disks. The trick is that the Linux kernel
lets you access disk devices (for whole disks and for
partitions) as if they were files... This is not the
case with the DOS kernel. To access DOS block devices,
you would use other tools... Which certainly do exist
but I know no good example apart from DEBUG ;-). You
have similar problems in Windows. Of course you can
still do all the fun stuff that DD can do if you have
a diskimage as a file, even in DOS and Windows, with
the DOS and Windows versions of DD ;-).

Hi Eric

Sorry for the delay but I had to wait until last nite to upload
lbacache-2008apr07.zip and a modded fdconfig.sys to the system in
question (it's 200km away) and then wait for someone to unzip & test.
Just as you thought it now boots OK.

If I get a chance this weekend I will set up a system from scratch using
the standard FreeDOS 1.0 CD (fdfullcd.iso) and then check out Mateusz
Vistes FDUPDATE.

While not user-friendly at all, you can use DEBUG for
this as long as the sector is inside a FAT formatted
partition. Old DEBUG versions do not support FAT32.

If the sector is the MBR, then you probably find quite
a few free existing tools for backup and restore of MBR.

Re: [Freedos-user] SATA optical

2008-12-11 Thread Eric Auer

Hi!

> I just noticed SHCD does not see the SATA optical.
> Is this to be expected?

I assume you try using SHSUCDX for SATA CD or DVD
drives? No problem for SHSUCDX (which creates a
drive letter from the raw data) but your low level
driver (to access raw data) must support SATA. One
typical example would be GCDROM:

www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/lsm.cgi?mode=lsm&lsm=base/gcdrom.lsm

The UDMA-speed SATA/IDE harddisk/cdrom driver "UIDE"
will probably support SATA CD/DVD as well. Note that
you do not normally need harddisk drivers in DOS, it
only helps with speed in cases where the BIOS does
not make good use of UDMA speeds.

Eric

PS: SHSUCDX only supports ISO9660 formatted disks, so
if you have UDF formatted CD or DVD, you cannot use
files on them. Are there UDF-aware *CDEX as well...?
