something where you use the page up and page down keys? Thanks,

2012-08-15 Thread Kenny Emond
Hey,

Of course. I meant just a general FreeDOS 1.1 install. I actually
found a seemingly unedited verion of it in C:\fdos\autoexec.txt and
another in C:\fdos\config.txt . Also, I can't remember (now that I
think about it) what files come with a general instal of FreeDOS. I'll
try to install it on a virtual machine on another computer and see
what it turns up. It looks like (I just looked) there is no longer
config.sys in C. Here is a list of the files that are now in my C:
drive:

   swsetup\ <-DIR
   CDMInst\ <-DIR
   autoexec.bat
   bootsect.bin
   command.com
   command.dos
   config.dos
   edit.cfg
   lcache00.tmp
   msnmgsr1.log
   netlog.txt
   rtspkt.com<- my packet driver
treeodir <-my own file of my directories
wattcpo.rig<-my copy of the wattcp file
   winpmfup.pm

The first two are directories that should not be there (I know for a
fact). Thanks for any help,

Hey,

Never mind what I said about wanting to fix it so win98 and FreeDOS could
work together. Now I just want to purge win98 from the system. I know it
(win98) edited some files in my FreeDOS (C:) drive, but I don't know what
ones (beside my "autoexec.bat" file). I know what files win98 would put
into my main drive (via a Microsoft page that says what files are in your
root drive), but I don't know what it changed. So any help would be
apreciated. I just want it totally purged from my system (that's what I
needed the example "autoexec.bat" example for). The only things I put in my
autoexec are my packet driver for ethernet and some aliases for shutting
down and rebooting.

Thanks for the help,

[Freedos-user] Example

2012-08-15 Thread Kenny Emond
Hello,

Could somebody provide me with an example of an unedited "autoexec.bat"
file that FreeDOS uses? I installed win98 on another (slave) hard-drive,
but it added all these files to "C" drive and edited my "autoexec.bat"
file. It really made me mad because I just wanted to have the win98 as an
extra (to boot from in the boot menu on start-up) OS to deal with some
printers and stuff the DOS couldn't. Anyone know how to instal it so it
doesn't do that too (along with the "autoexec.bat" file)?

   Thanks,

[Freedos-user] ? - ?Not sure? - ?

2012-07-14 Thread Kenny Emond
Hey,

I'm not sure if I can post this here, but I seem to have hit a small
roadblock (but I don't know where it is). My main goal is to have an easily
accessible meter and feet converter. When I use FBide to compile and run,
it comes up with no errors. But when it runs, I put in "a" or "b" and then
it just quits (of course, after I press "enter"). Could anyone help me out?
Here's what my file looks like:

dim ft as single, m as single, answer1 as single, answer2 as
single, input1 as string, a as string, b as string
input "Convert (A) Feet to meters, or (B) Meters to feet? [NOTE-
Use lower case!] ", input1
   cls
   if input1 = a Then
  input "Feet amount: ", ft

  answer1 = ft * 3.2808399
  cls
  print ; ft; " feet is equal to "; answer1; " meters."
  sleep

   elseif input1 = b then
  input "Meter amount: ", m

  answer2 = m / 3.2808399
  cls
  print ; m; " meters is equal to "; answer2; " feet."
  sleep

   end if
   sleep
   end

Any ideas?

[Freedos-user] Sound Card Driver

2012-06-06 Thread Kenny Emond
Hey,

I need to know how to find, figure out, configure or whatever my sound
driver. I need a driver for my sound card, but I don't know how to do it.
If this helps at all, somehow Mpxplay magically got the sound to play
through my PC speakers, while all my other programs and games (mostly the
games because most of the programs just say "no driver detected" and don't
work) just use some really crappy version of sound blaster (my PC used to
run XP, so it was pretty limited in the 8-bit style sounds of a sound
blaster-type card). If you need any other information, I will gladly supply
the details as I am in desperate need of help! Thanks,

Was the printer both plugged in and powered on?

The most likely problem is that you have more than one USB host controller.
If you simply do a "USBUHCI" or "USBUHCIL" to install the driver for the
USB host controller, it will only install the driver for the first host
controller (Index 0). That may not be the host controller that the printer
is plugged into.

Start by doing a "USBHOSTS" to see how many UHCI controllers the computer
has, and then try installing USBUHCIL with the different Indexes (USBUHCIL
/Index:#), where # are the different indexes (0 through however many
controllers you have). That's the "shotgun" approach that will probably
get you going. If it doesn't, there are many more extensive
troubleshooting steps we can perform, but they are complicated to work
through.

Hey, thanks for your help. I actually found out from HP that my printer
is not compatible with DOS at all. I tried loading the USBUHCIL and then
running USBPRINT. The program beeped, indicating the printer is bad. So,
that settles it. I'm trading printers for an older one that should work
with DOS (an HP Deskjet 932c), or something.

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos-user Digest, Vol 635, Issue 1

2012-05-22 Thread Kenny Emond
---
Your problem is that that you're using a USB printer, rather than a
parallel port printer. MS never added USB support to DOS, even though they
actually continued to make DOS for several years after USB came out
(mid-1990's). No version of DOS today has "native" support for USB
(printers, mice, keyboards, etc.) -- not even FreeDOS.

There are only two possible solutions right now if you want to print to a
USB printer in "real" DOS (and not under a Windows "DOS Box" of some sort).
I am working on DOS USB some drivers, but they are not in a finished state
yet and will only work on some computers (depends on the hardware). My
web site is:

http://bretjohnson.us

Georg Potthast also has also made some DOS USB drivers. His will work on
more hardware than mine currently do, but are much more limited in their
functionality (and are not free). His web site is:

http://www.georgpotthast.de/usb/

There is also a Wiki page on DOS USB support, which has quite a bit of
useful information:

http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.USB

Sorry it isn't any easier than that, but unfortunately you'll need to do
some research and experimentation to find something that works for you.

---

I tried using your programs, but for some reason they did not work. When
I loaded the usbprint app, I ran this command "usbprint status" and it said
on the bottom "no printer installed" when I clearly had the printer plugged
in. I also tried it where I loaded it and then plugged in the printer, but
it still said "no printer installed". Any help would do it! Thanks,

[Freedos-user] Printer Setup

2012-05-17 Thread Kenny Emond
Hey all DOS users and such,

I know I already posted a thread before about setting up a shared
printer (which by the way, how would you acquire the ip address of the
printer in DOS? And how again would you say you had to use the printer if
you wanted to print something from a DOS computer in the LAN network? Sorry
about the little rabbit trail here), but I wanted to know how to just set
up a regular printer in DOS (FreeDOS). I'm pretty sure you need drivers for
it, but beyond that, I'm pretty fuzzy on how to actually get the computer
communicating with the printer. I'd also like to know how to set it up so
it loads the driver and printer on startup, and I can call from it anytime
with the "print" command. I'm sure that setting it up is the same as doing
that, but I just figured I'd clarify, just in case. Thanks,

Enter your Gmail address there and pick some password, preferably a
unique one, thus different from your email password.

I typed "C:\command.com" and it said something, then at the bottom it also
said "System halted". So I restarted it, and chose the fourth selection
(Load freedos without drivers), and it came on with no problem. As for that
part about "DOS=HIGH" and such, I don't know where that is, so I can't
erase it. If you meant in the autoexec.bat file, there was no such part in
it to erase. Also, I already subscribed to the list, but theres nowhere to
log in (if there's supposed to be).

Re: [Freedos-user] Sound Card Drivers and others...

2012-04-13 Thread Kenny Emond
In response to Eric's post, I just wanted to be able to hear the regular
sounds that a DOS game makes, instead of a crappy version that my sound
chip makes. You know how on a windows XP system, sometimes you hear a beep
that comes from the computer itself and not from the speakers? Well my comp
is pretty much just limited to that beep and barely busts the occasional
"b" sound in a DOS game (an explosion or something). When you said
"specifics", Eric, I can't really say any one game in particular. But I can
give a few (I found almost all on "DOS Games Archive"): God of Thunder,
Lemmings, and Duke Nukem (It does actually pretty well with d-nukem, but
again, it still sounds crappy). I have found out that in the past this comp
would not put out sound unless there was some sort of speaker plugged in. I
tried that with these games, but to no avail. By the way, mpxplay works
perfectly on the DOS comp (it won't even work on my laptop, despite the
prodding and such).

out. What the heck are Telnet, TCP and all those other programs that comes
with mTCP for?

Re: [Freedos-user] Arachne Troubles

2012-04-09 Thread Kenny Emond
Okay, Thanks everyone! I filled in the my_ip section with my ip (according
to dhcp.exe), but Arachne still points me to the Roadrunner search, saying
"Why Am I Here? - You entered a web address that was used to present site
suggestions...". I tried a lot of things, one of which was filing in mtcp
(which I did successfully and when I ping a web address or other computers
connected to our router, it comes back positive), but nothing really
worked. I know that our internet works on our other comps because I'm
browsing right now on our mac. Also, Arachne is clearly connected because
it brings up the home page, which it couldn't do before I set it up right.
I also have to add (since I didn't really in the first place): I'm pretty
new to DOS, so I don't know all the DOS-talk terms and whatnot. I do know
how to effectively do a lot of things, but not as much as most of you
experienced users and such.

[Freedos-user] Arachne Troubles

2012-04-08 Thread Kenny Emond
Hey,

I was finnaly able to find a packet driver for my DOS computer (ethernet
connection), but for some reason Arachne shows the main page, but when I
try to go to a different page, it brings up a "roadrunner" search thing. I
tried to edit the wattcp.cfg file, like so:

   my_ip = dhcp
   netmask = 255.255.255.0
   gateway = 192.168.0.1
   domain_list = www.rr.com

I had to use our mac to find out our router ip (it was under "dhcp" as
"router"). I put the ip under the "gateway" section, which I don't know was
correct. Anyway, it didn't really work, so I'm at a loss of what to do
next. Arachne is at least able to connect, so I did something right. Also,
what does the mtcp.cfg file do? I know it has to do with ping and other
such things, but how do I use it? And how did it look originally (I
accidently did something and it made the file blank)? Any help on any of
these questions would be wonderful. Thanks!

P.S.- Please don't use any info I gave you to hack me or something like
that. I'm doing this on the honour system. Thanks! Again!

[Freedos-user] Getting Online With FreeDOS

2012-04-05 Thread Kenny Emond
Hi,

I am very new to DOS (I only just got started with things like CMD about
a month and a half ago), and I would like help on how to get my new(ish)
FreeDOS computer on the internet. I don't know much about DOS, so I would
like some super-basic instructions on how to set it up. I am connected via
ethernet, which is connected to a wi-fi box, which is connected to my
modem. I am hopping to use arachne as my internet program, and barebones
(or maybe pegasus) for my e-mail, but I would not mind suggestions. I don't
know how to do much in DOS, so please try not to get all techy, as
I probably won't know what you are saying :) . I also looked up other
info, and it said to get a packet driver for my ethernet thing, but I
couldn't seem to get any. I think my ethernet port is from the company
"Via", but it's hard to tell since the port is built into the mother-board.
Thanks in advance,
