Re: [Freedos-user] Question about Virtual Box performance.

2007-07-04 Thread Marten Feldtmann
One should keep in mind, that Microsoft indeed has changed the VirtualPC
from their first version (2004) on - we used the pre-Microsoft version
of that tool for a DOS based software and Novell Netware connector.
Starting with VirtualPC (from Microsoft) the network speed reduces
dramatically .. therefore we gave up the idea of using the VirtualPC
for that stuff.

Re: [Freedos-user] DOS on VM

2006-09-24 Thread Marten Feldtmann
Microsoft now gives the VirtualPC away for free use - you may give it a
try. But to be
honest, the best emulator for DOS is still the latest software version
of the VirtualPC
BEFORE Microsoft bought the company and changed the development.

We used that old version on several machines to get a special MS DOS
program to run
under Windows NT.

Then the software was taken off the market and the new version from
Microsoft appeared
and they seem to change quite a lot within the software (for security
reasons one
could read on the WWW) and now network access under DOS (Novell) was so
slow,
that it was unusable.

Perhaps the best DOS emulation on the market is still OS/2 or we might
see a ZEN enabled
DOS to run under Linux host system ?

The development is done either under OS/2 or Windows, but you create DOS
code ...

Sorry for the garbage. In the OpenWatcom site, I only find
the installer for windows. No DOS version.

[Freedos-user] Release 2 is strange

2006-03-18 Thread Marten Feldtmann

All that software is strange. The CD-ROm installation did not do
the work and now I tried to install via the discs and all these
installations break with missing files here and missing files
there. Especially "textinst.exe" is missing ...

This is the worst software installation I have ever seen so far
and no positive sign at all.

[Freedos-user] Installation experiences ...

2006-03-17 Thread Marten Feldtmann

Hello,

I've just tested the ISO-CD image to install the system on two different
machines and - after all - it failed.

The first machine was a ten years old P-II with 390 MByte RAM and I was
not able to boot the burned ISO-CD on that machine (though the other
bootable (I had access to) CDROMS worked).

The next one was a P-IV machine with 512 MByte RAM. The system booted,
but after all I did not managed to install the stuff there.

During one installation (there are several way) I received invalid opcodes
messages and the installation stopped.

Then after about 10 retries I managed to get the installation run through,
but I never managed to make the system reboot - no chance. I always got
the message: "PRESS KEY TO REBOOT".

And yes I did "sys c:" - but it did not help at all.

Keep up doing this work. I like the idea to have a free dos available.
