Re: [Freedos-user] DISKCOPY to disk larger than image
Hi David & others, I think there are two answers to this: 1. Diskcopy could have a command line option to treat a floppy as flat sequence of sectors and copy anything onto any disk as long as there is enough or more space 2. Diskcopy is right that it is a bad idea to waste half of the space of a 1.44M diskette by putting a 720k filesystem on it. The proper answer would be to use FORMAT (in full format mode as low leven format, not just quick format to reset the filesystem) to put the whole diskette in 720k structure. USB drives may have troubles doing this. A new BIOS may lack support. Formatting a disk to 720k will even make it work on some 720k drives. Not necessarily all, as you cannot make a higher capacity drive put "as bulky" bits as the old drives. So using a REAL 720k disk or a real 720k drive to format any disk to retro style 720k is better for having disks which work in all drives :-) The basic question is probably why your image is 720k and on which drives you want to use that disk later? Also, a 1.2 on 1.44, 360 on a 720 or whatever as long as it “fits”. These sources and many others were lost decades ago in a hard drive failure. It was good for making backups of diskettes (including some that other tools could not clone). Unfortunately, it does not use a standard image file format like dd, raread or edict. But, if a sector on the source is unreadable, it will be made unreadable on the target disk. Basically, there are two tools. Savedisk and Makedisk. One makes an image. The other puts the image on a floppy. Anyhow, if you want, I’ll release the binaries to public domain and put them up on my server. :-) Jerome -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Did he say it was in image format like iso. Disk copy will only copy to another disk with the same format ie fat32 to fat32. Even if it was an image; xcopy would copy the image just not break it down into programs and files. cheers DS On Fri, 29 Jun 2018 09:40:48 -0700 (PDT) geneb writes: > On Fri, 29 Jun 2018, Dale E Sterner wrote: > > > Try xcopy instead. > > > xcopy doesn't work with disk images. > > g. > > -- > Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 > http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. > http://www.diy-cockpits.org/coll - Go Collimated or Go Home. > Some people collect things for a hobby. But the fact that by merely moving data it creates what appears to DOS to be a 720k file system that it can read and navigate correctly demonstrates that it's not a hardware problem. There is no problem here. dd is doing exactly what it's designed to do and the DOS utility is doing the same. If you want the DOS program to write a 720k image to a disk, get a 720k (DSDD) 3.5" disk. The DOS program is probably checking to see what kind of disk it's going to write to. Since the DSHD 3.5" disk won't engage the 720k media sensor (that's why the DSHD has two holes - so it won't do that), the system is going to reply with parameters that match a DSHD disk and it'll complain because it's looking for a DSDD disk. When the media sensor isn't enaged, the drive will configure itself for a data rate of 500Kbps and a read/write head field of 720 Oersteds. If the media sensor IS engaged (why a DSDD 3.5" disk has only the write-enable hale), the data rate is clocked down to 250Kbps and the head field is adjusted to 665 Oersteds. *Technically* you can write DD data to an HD disk (and vice-versa if you punch a media hole in the DD disk), but don't expect the data to be readable for very long. If you absolutely HAVE to write a 720k image to a 1.44MB disk, put a bit of black tape over the media sensor hole. (Or do it the right way and scare up a 720k disk.) Also, don't top-post. :) g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.diy-cockpits.org/coll - Go Collimated or Go Home. You might have to blind both holes of the diskette first (one for write permission, second for 720K selection). Note however, that once a 1.44 diskette has been formatted as 1.44, reformatting it as 720K is quite risky. The tracks might not reform correctly, leading to subsequent data loss. Re: [Freedos-user] DISKCOPY to disk larger than image
DISKCOPY copies the entire disk as an image, very similar to how ISO images work for copying CD's. That is, DISKCOPY does not just copy the files but rather copies the entire disk, including all the "hidden" metadata and formatting and empty space that the disk contains. It is a low-level copy, very different than a regular copy. That's why the two disks need to be the exact same size. If you just wan to copy the data you need to use COPY or XCOPY.
