[Freedos-user] Lynx Live
In an effort to demonstrate Lynx (ie - a text web browser) on Dos as a viable, fast and fun option, I created a boot img to do so and squirreled it away in the forgotten tunnels of the gophernet where I hope it shall only be found by people who will not unduly pester me. gopher://sdf.org/1/users/helpdeskdan/lynx P.S. In the interest of preventing this from devolving into a "how to gopher" thread, just go here: https://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw?=sdf.org+70+312f75736572732f68656c706465736b64616e2f6c796e78 ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Doug Kaufman's web page is still up, but his Lynx is pretty old: The latest DOS port of lynx is 2.8.5rel.1. You can download it here (2463576 bytes, 18 April 2004). Last line of that web page says: This page last updated 2 November 2006. URL is http://www.rahul.net/dkaufman/ I see http://www.nettamer.net/tamer.html is still up: looks like no update since 1999. I find lynx useful, elinks may be better, but only for very limited use and not for general browsing, certainly not online banking. There's nothing to skip, it's just DPMI (usually CWSDPMI), which is similar to (but not quite) a DOS extender. So only if you're not running an OS that already has its own DPMI server, you just download CWSDPMI and put it in the same directory (or PATH somewhere), and it automatically finds and loads it for you. It will work with MS-DOS, FreeDOS, or DR-DOS, etc. (any DJGPP mirror) ... /current/v2misc/ ... csdpmi7b.zip -- Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Hi Jas, I take it you mean compiled for Dos? actually I wish someone would update that myself so I could try it stand alone. There is a terrific person who has done them in the past, but I have not come across a compiled one likely later than the one you reference. Most of my Internet is done via a shell service, shellworld. We have lynx updated regularly, along with links and e-links. shellworld is based on freebsd, so there are possibilities on that front. Elinks have support secure (SSL) connections: You need to add string to autoexec.bat SET RANDFILE=c:\command.com or something similar (they say that you(as another, "true way") need some .sys file, to make/create variable %RANDOM% for SSL, but my way is more simple) And, Elinks hawe one bug (or feauture): (O)ptions-Connections-Try ipv6 when connected- (e) and you need set it to 0. On March 2 Karen Lewellen asked about a DOS port of elinks. My question is: What advantage(s) links/elinks have over lynx (I ask just about their DOS ports, not versions for other OS'es)? I did not yet find any, on the contrary, lynx has had https/ssl capability for the last 10 years, while neither links nor elinks have it yet. [Freedos-user] lynx and networking?
I recall there was some discussion about this a little while back, but did not follow the conclusion. I have the network setup just fine, the interest is creating a watpcp.cfg file that lets lynx be fine. better still a package that incorporates this, so I can input what I require in the file. Some programs linked with WATTCP accept only a path in this variable (e.g., Lynx 2.8.5, FDSMTPOP), others accept a filename with path (e.g WGET 1.11.1) and, in this case, the file may have another name. >It looks like Lynx is using WATT-32 which makes sense >in retrospect since Lynx is compiled with DJGPP. >Apparently DHCP does not work right in this case. >I detected that Lynx sends a DHCP request message >immediately rather than the expected DHCP discover >message (which if successful is then followed by DHCP >request). I found that, if you use this wattcp.cfg file: my_ip=DHCP Lynx (both 2.8.4 and 2.8.5) fails to configure, but if you have no wattcp.cfg, Lynx will try to configure first with BOOTP, then with DHCP, then with RARP and succeed if any is supported, but it takes about one minute for this. DHCP.EXE from mTCP fails -- times out before getting a reply. NTOOL configures in about one second, but gets a nameserver value that does not respond to further DNS requests. However, only a limited set of AC97 and HDA sound chips is supported, so I am curious which chip you have (or simulate, if you use a virtual PC) and if some media players for DOS support it. As for the virtual PC topic - of course it is easier to use VLC / MPLAYER / Media Player Classic in your host system (MacOS, Linux, Win) then. And will lynx need software to run, like will a lot of sites want me to download applications and software? Also I wonder are there limitations to lynx running in freedos. Like I wonder with YouTube how would dos play a video? Just curious, I think it is neat to browse with lynx. Anyway thanks again. And any added info or help would be great. [Freedos-user] Lynx issues
I got Lynx 2.8.5 running on FreeDOS in Virtual Box on Windows. I was able to navigate to yahoo.com and some other spots. There are some "anomolies" in the way Lynx works compared to typical WATTCP programs. It looks like Lynx is using WATT-32 which makes sense in retrospect since Lynx is compiled with DJGPP. Apparently DHCP does not work right in this case. I detected that Lynx sends a DHCP request message immediately rather than the expected DHCP discover message (which if successful is then followed by DHCP request). Bottom line: Lynx does not work with DHCP. Someone would need to re-link with a later version of WATT-32 assuming that there exists a later version with DHCP working right. So the idea of using NTOOL is probably the right way to go here. Here is my WATTCP.CFG file: my_ip = 192.168.1.41 (assigned via DHCP, then manual edit file) nameserver = 8.8.8.8(google public nameserver) gateway = 192.168.1.1 (my wireless router) netmask = 255.255.254.0 You need to set up some environment variables. I put all the lynx files in a directory called c:\lynx. I then deleted the local WATTCP.CFG file since I already have one. Again the behavior is squirrely perhaps because it's using WATT-32. SET WATTCP.CFG = C:\ SET HOME=C:\lynx SET LYNX_CFG=C:\lynx\lynx.cfg Put yourself into the directory c:\lynx, type lynx, things start working... I have VirtualBox set up as bridged mode so that the VM gets its own IP from the router. I am running lynx 2.8.5 it came with the version of freedos that I got. freedos 1.0. I am running freedos through virtualbox on my MacBook pro laptop running mac os 10.6.4. I was going to try and get lynx running. I haven't been able to launch it yet. I used ntool's -g command line option to redirect my network info to wattcp.cfg. I started lynx with: lynx -cfg c:\fdos\lynx\lynx.cfg because I had read in the lynx configuration I could use that, if lynx.cfg wasn't where lynx would look for it. I haven't been able to get lynx to startup yet.
