[Freedos-user] Lynx Live

2019-12-01 Thread Dan Schmidt
In an effort to demonstrate Lynx (ie - a text web browser) on Dos as a
viable, fast and fun option, I created a boot img to do so and squirreled
it away in the forgotten tunnels of the gophernet where I hope it shall
only be found by people who will not unduly pester me.

P.S. In the interest of preventing this from devolving into a "how to
gopher" thread, just go here:

Doug Kaufman's web page is still up, but his Lynx is pretty old:

The latest DOS port of lynx is 2.8.5rel.1. You can download it here (2463576
bytes, 18 April 2004).

Last line of that web page says:

This page last updated 2 November 2006.

URL is http://www.rahul.net/dkaufman/

I see http://www.nettamer.net/tamer.html is still up: looks like no update
since 1999.

I find lynx useful, elinks may be better, but only for very limited use and not
for general browsing, certainly not online banking.

Yes, I knew you ran MS-DOS, you've mentioned it before. :-)

I'm glad somebody is willing to help. Things like this are a bit tricky.

Yes, you've mentioned it before. I presume that Lynx may be the most
useful there.

Hmmm? There's nothing to skip, it's just DPMI (usually CWSDPMI), which
is similar to (but not quite) a DOS extender. So only if you're not
running an OS that already has its own DPMI server, you just download
CWSDPMI and put it in the same directory (or PATH somewhere), and it
automatically finds and loads it for you. It will work with MS-DOS,
FreeDOS, or DR-DOS, etc.

Even, if it will - the days when we could use Lynx for browsing Web contents
are long gone. Java everywhere... :( and even without this if site's pages
haven't been designed to be Lynx-friendly, in most cases Lynx displays them
as a hard to navigate (even difficult to read) mess.

DJGPP is a 32-bit DOS extender / libc / runtime (requiring 386),
usually for DOS ports of GNU tools (e.g. GCC). It's been around
(roughly) since 1989. It was used by Quake 1 back in the day (1996).
It's somewhat unfairly considered "obsolete" in lieu of Win32 (e.g.
Win95 or NT). But tons of software used it, again primarily "back in
the day" (although it's still minimally updated and supported).

Yes, Lynx will presumably run under native DOS, but it sounds very
complicated to get working. It's not impossible, but I don't recommend
it for the fainthearted. I'm a little savvy, but even I think it might
be more trouble than it's worth. Still, it's nice to have. I just
don't quite have the energy to waste dozens of hours on it right now.

It's kind of a pain to get all the mods & CA cert, but SSL works properly
with said CA cert providing warning of invalid site certificates. With
"nopause" and a couple other tweaks, it is extremely fast. I can boot &
get the weather faster on my twenty year old laptop than my two year old

albeit a bit ugly.

Last time I tried building it, it was buggy and prone to crashes (at
least under VirtualBox). But I didn't look very closely (and don't
know what I'm doing most of the time).

FYI, Juan Manuel Guerrero did just release his own DJGPP build of Lynx
2.8.8, if anyone here is curious to try it out:

https://groups.google.com/forum/message/raw?msg=comp.os.msdos.djgpp/flY264GkHV8/oZnMgvUd9Y4J

http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/djgpp/beta/v2tk/lynx288b.zip

But it also needs some auxiliary files ... at minimum (probably more),
several DXE3 (.dxe) files for i18n:

../beta/v2gnu/licv114br2.zip
../beta/v2gnu/gtxt192b.zip

I haven't tested this, so you're on your own (for now). Feel free to
report bugs or quirks to the DJGPP newsgroup / mailing list.

Latest Lynx I could find compiled for DOS was 2.8.5, 32-bit:
http://www.rahul.net/dkaufman/

I formerly used it, even for e-commerce though not for online banking.

This web site hasn't been updated in years (2 November 2006).

Net-Tamer has apparently not been updated since 1999
http://www.nettamer.net/tamer.html
No doubt obsolete by now.

I suppose one who wants an updated Lynx for DOS 32-bit can build it him/herself
from the source.

Hi Jas,
I take it you mean compiled for Dos?
actually I wish someone would update that myself so I could try it stand
alone. There is a terrific person who has done them in the past, but I
have not come across a compiled one likely later than the one you
reference.
Most of my Internet is done via a shell service, shellworld. We have lynx
updated regularly, along with links and e-links.
shellworld is based on freebsd, so there are possibilities on that front.
Anyone have a better answer?

a DOS version of was 2.8.5 .
Do you have any later version ? Where did you
get it ?

Elinks have support secure (SSL) connections:
You need to add string to autoexec.bat
SET RANDFILE=c:\command.com

or something similar
(they say that you(as another, "true way") need some .sys file, to make/create
variable %RANDOM% for SSL, but my way is more simple)
And, Elinks hawe one bug (or feauture):
(O)ptions-Connections-Try ipv6 when connected- (e) and you need set it to 0. If
set to 1, (by default, elinks trying to use ipv6 always) ELinks can hungs or
quit or something strange, or not open some sites

and, some good links for you:

P. S: I am using ELinks always, and right now
P. P. S: I was typing links to ibiblio.net manually; if I make a "typo", just
try to "google-ing" this links, for repair. If links works, skip it.

IIRC, they are all based upon older Lynx with a few extras. -g turns on
graphics mode, and the DOS port of elinks even allegedly (in whatever way)
supports downloading in background too. But Dillo (or DPlus or whatever) is
probably better for our uses. And don't forget the classic, Arachne.

My question is: What advantage(s) links/elinks
have over lynx (I ask just about their DOS ports,

I did not yet find any, on the contrary, lynx has
had https/ssl capability for the last 10 years,
while neither links nor elinks have it yet.
Also, lynx (2.8.5) can handle file inputs in forms,

AFAIK, the environment variable is WATTCP_CFG.
Some programs linked with WATTCP accept only a
path in this variable (e.g., Lynx 2.8.5, FDSMTPOP),
others accept a filename with path (e.g WGET 1.11.1)
and, in this case, the file may have another name.

I found that, if you use this wattcp.cfg file:

my_ip=DHCP

Lynx (both 2.8.4 and 2.8.5) fails to configure, but if you
have no wattcp.cfg, Lynx will try to configure first with
BOOTP, then with DHCP, then with RARP and succeed if any is
supported, but it takes about one minute for this.
DHCP.EXE from mTCP fails -- times out before getting a reply.
NTOOL configures in about one second, but gets a nameserver
value that does not respond to further DNS requests.
All my tests were done under plain DOS using a dial-up
connection.

BTW, how did you detect what messages Lynx sent? neither
-trace nor -wdebug options seem to log protocol IDs.

Usually is completely safe, because there aren't many
applications capable of self-starting under DOS, but
useless, as the application will most probably not run
under DOS, too.
Lynx does not need any additional software to run, but
it will not execute Javascript, nor Java, nor understand
XML. Probably, the server in the sites you visited did
check for a program that supports some format and, not
finding any, offered one.
You need video player software that runs under DOS.
I cannot help on this, except by telling that there
is not any .SWF player for DOS.

Best regards
   JAS

Interesting question indeed.

That probably is Flash. There is no official Flash for DOS, but
it might be possible to port the open source clone GNASH to DOS.

> Just wondering if it is safe to download the application?

Yes but it would not run.

> And will lynx need software to run, like will a lot of sites want
> me to download applications and software?

As far as I remember, many modern formats are not supported
depending on which DOS browser you use. For example CSS, new
HTML 4 / 5 features and JavaScript. Even HTTPS / SSL is not
always supported in DOS web browsers. I guess others on this
list can give you more details about which browser has what.

> I wonder with YouTube how would dos play a video?

Youtube uses Flash FLV and MPEG4 MP4 videos as far as I know
and you should be able to play those with MPXPLAY for DOS or
maybe with a port of MPLAYER, the latter maybe supported by
the HX or HXRT DOS extender. However, only a limited set of
AC97 and HDA sound chips is supported, so I am curious which
chip you have (or simulate, if you use a virtual PC) and if
some media players for DOS support it. As for the virtual PC
topic - of course it is easier to use VLC / MPLAYER / Media
Player Classic in your host system (MacOS, Linux, Win) then.

Cheers, Eric

Hello,
Just got lynx running under freedos. I wanted to thank everyone for the help.

I ran dhcp through mTCP and then edited wattcp.cfg manually. I guess now I
should try and automate some stuff. I wonder why I can't get Ntool to work? I
think It would be easier to automate stuff if I got Ntool to work.

I have a question about lynx I went to YouTube.com and was going to search for
a video and lynx asked me to download an application. Just wondering if it is
safe to download the application? And will lynx need software to run, like will
a lot of sites want me to download applications and software?

Also I wonder are there limitations to lynx running in freedos. Like I wonder
with YouTube how would dos play a video? Just curious, I think it is neat to
browse with lynx.

Anyway thanks again. And any added info or help would be great.

[Freedos-user] Lynx issues

2011-03-19 Thread cordata02

I got Lynx 2.8.5 running on FreeDOS in Virtual Box on Windows. I was able to
navigate to yahoo.com and some other spots.

There are some "anomolies" in the way Lynx works compared to typical WATTCP
programs.

It looks like Lynx is using WATT-32 which makes sense in retrospect since Lynx
is compiled with DJGPP.

Apparently DHCP does not work right in this case. I detected that Lynx sends a
DHCP request message immediately rather than the expected DHCP discover message
(which if successful is then followed by DHCP request).

Bottom line: Lynx does not work with DHCP. Someone would need to re-link with
a later version of WATT-32 assuming that there exists a later version with DHCP
working right.

So the idea of using NTOOL is probably the right way to go here.

Here is my WATTCP.CFG file:

my_ip = 192.168.1.41 (assigned via DHCP, then manual edit file)
nameserver = 8.8.8.8(google public nameserver)
gateway = 192.168.1.1 (my wireless router)
netmask = 255.255.254.0

You need to set up some environment variables.
I put all the lynx files in a directory called c:\lynx.

I then deleted the local WATTCP.CFG file since I already have one. Again the
behavior is squirrely perhaps because it's using WATT-32.

SET WATTCP.CFG = C:\
SET HOME=C:\lynx
SET LYNX_CFG=C:\lynx\lynx.cfg

Put yourself into the directory c:\lynx, type lynx, things start working...

I have VirtualBox set up as bridged mode so that the VM gets its own IP from
the router. You could in theory
also do NAT and share the host IP.

Re: [Freedos-user] lynx

2011-03-15 Thread James Collins
I am running lynx 2.8.5 it came with the version of freedos that I got. freedos
1.0.

I am running freedos through virtualbox on my MacBook pro laptop running mac os
10.6.4.

I was going to try and get lynx running. I haven't been able to launch it yet.
I used ntool's -g command line option to redirect my network info to
wattcp.cfg. I started lynx with:

lynx -cfg c:\fdos\lynx\lynx.cfg

because I had read in the lynx configuration I could use that, if lynx.cfg
wasn't where lynx would look for it.

I haven't been able to get lynx to startup yet.

Michael Brutman asked an important question:
What version of lynx are you using ?

 I add these other questions:
1) You say you are using mac os x. This means you are running
freedos under an emulator ?

2) Where did you get yur version of lynx ? I would like to
 take a look at it.

I use lynx everyday, but there are quite a few versions
around, and they are not exact replacements of each other.
I do not use an emulator, but run DOS (DR, Free or MS) as
the operating system.

AFAIK, lynx looks for a lynx.cfg file in the directory
the lynx.exe file resides. You can change this by setting
the environment variable "lynx_cfg" . This file is
not strictly needed, because you may set all options in
the command line, but there are so many options that it
will be an awkward command line, to say the least.

i looked at the set command, one thing I noticed was my temp dir was listed as
c:\fdos\temp

I think that is why I got the initial error, regarding the temp directory. I
tried to edit my autoexec.bat file to set my temp directory to where it was
located in my file structure. which was
c:\fdos\bin\temp
but when I restarted my computer and ran the lynxbat.bat file followed by the
set command it changed back to
c:\fdos\temp

I did make a temp directory in
c:\fdos and that error went away

I don't think the wattcp.cfg file is a problem, atleast judging by the error
messages I have been getting (even though I did copy wattcp.cfg into the
directory where the lynxbat.bat file is located)

an error I get often is:
Configuration file /dev/env/DJDIR/lib/lynx.cfg is not available

I have a file in the dir where I have lynxbat.bat that is called lynxcfg.cfg, I
don't know if this is the file they are referring to. I have opened lynxcfg.cfg
and read some. when I type out lynxcfg.cfg it says a couple of things,

1. it has a comment right at the top and it calls the file lynx.cfg

2. it has a comment that says the default location of this file is:
/usr/local/lib/lynx.cfg (unix)
I am running mac os x, which I think is a form of unix. I went into a terminal
on my host computer but I cant find those folders they don't match my host
computer.

lynxcfg.cfg goes on to say that you can change the default location of
lynx.cfg in the userdefs.h file and recompile it or you can use the -cfg
command line option, which I have tried with no luck.

I wonder why my version of freedos called lynx.cfg lynxcfg.cfg. I also wonder
why my autoexec.bat set the temp directory wrong.

I have tried lynx a number of different ways starting with your suggestions for
wattcp.cfg. and editing lynxbat.bat a number of different ways, with no luck

any more help would be great

 Did you try

 set HOME=.\
 set wattcp_cfg=%HOME%

I am not sure whether "." only shall work,
or whether you must use ".\" to mean the
CWD. And what about using

 set HOME=.\
 set wattcp_cfg=.\

that is more explicit.

So your current working directory was c:\fdos\lynx ,
and the wattcp.cfg file was there. So, where the
reference to c:\fdos\temp\ came from ?

Try the command

 set

without any parameters. This shall display
all your environment variables, with the
implicit values already explicited.

the sign was part of the prompt.

It is telling lynx to search for wattcp.cfg in the
current working directory. Note that (at least for
the version of lynx I use), it should have been
 set wattcp_cfg=.\
with an underdash, not a dot.

The wattcp_cfg variable shall point to whatever
directory your wattcp.cfg file is in. Note that
the file wattcp.cfg is rewritten at every
restart of the connection.

>the %, confuses me.
This is to tell DOS it shall replace the name between
the % signs with the environment variable so named.

>I just tried it right now at the c:\ prompt-

Did you type the "greater than" sign between
the first and the second "lynx" in the second
line above or c:\fdos\lynx was your current
directory and the sign was part of the prompt ?
