Re: [Freedos-user] Thank you to kernel developers for new kernel 2038
I am also very glad for the new kernel. I am waiting for the 1.1 version impatiently. I have made a FreeDOS distro of my own. Philosoficaly it is an installer radicaly oposed to FreeDOS's. My intention was to get close to the original DOS installer, wich is... nothing :) ... I just added a very simple .bat menu for formating enc copying. This has been used by completly layman clients with great success I will release an english version soon after the 1.1 official comes out. Re: [Freedos-user] Thank you to kernel developers for new kernel 2038
Hi Florian, >> USBDOS device scan is part of install but should >> only be done AFTER install, no USB devices used DURING install > > USB support in FreeDOS? The FreeDOS 1.0 FULL distro defaults to downloading various proprietary but free USB drivers (which can hang because the NIC and DHCP autoconfig can hang) and then run the drivers. Alledgedly to allow you to access USB drives during install, but you cannot easily switch the target to the USB drive at that late moment during install, and the USB bus scan also had a considerable risk of hanging or crashing. Because of those crash-risks, I recommend that FreeDOS 1.1 delays all downloads and USB bus scans to after installing an initial working system. This will make initial install much faster and much more reliable. We have a POSTINST step already so it would be easy to move risky activities to there :-). Note that this only affects FULL, because BASE does not include software which involves networking or other crash risks as part of the install process :-). Re: [Freedos-user] Thank you to kernel developers for new kernel 2038
Hi Pat, Bart, Mateusz, Rugxulo, others, > I would like to thank all the folks who have worked very hard to > produce this latest kernel. You will probably want to wait for kernel 2039, as Bart already made some nice features such as combined built-in-country and country sys support and in-place-rename. He is also working on f-node removal :-) Talking about the distribution, the files on www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/fdupdate/wip/ need review so Mateusz can put them on www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/fdupdate/ and then we have to check which of the packages are actual updates compared to FreeDOS 1.0 and for which updates we do not yet have new packages, see the version database at: www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/lsm.cgi?mode=dir&dir=base Once we have packages for all updates in BASE, we can put those "on top of an existing 1.0 BASE ISO" to make almost a complete 1.1 BASE ISO... http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/freedos/index.php?title=Install lists the RELATIVELY minor OTHER bugs which should be fixed before a FreeDOS 1.1 BASE and FULL ISO can be released. Many affect only a FULL ISO, but many also affect a BASE ISO. The problems which should really be fixed for 1.0, imho, are: - whitespace after language in config sys generation must be removed, as some libraries cannot find files otherwise - load without drivers option cannot be used until somebody adds a line "4?ECHO No drivers loaded" to config sys ;-) - wrong usb settings (but will change with new drivers anyway) - htmlhelp only in one language (we have DE / EN versions now) - include PG and MORESYS for viewing files and output? - FASTHELP / MAKEROM incomplete, FORTUNE broken (I have a fix) - CWSDPMI should really be CWSDPMI, not HX RT DPMI, and updated - packages which need internet during install should not be in the default selection: CDRTOOL / DFL - ASPI / SCSI, FPROT, VIA (replace FPROT by CLAMAV CLAMSCAN and update DB AFTER install) Problem is that autoconfigured NIC/DHCP for WGET are crash-prone - a crash-prone USBDOS device scan is part of install but should only be done AFTER install, no USB devices used DURING install - outside BASE, internet-less people should omit: WGET, FDSTPOP, BSFLITE, LNXSMAL, LYNX, OPENXP, VNC, HXRT, WATTCP, ARACHNE, CRYNWR - EMACS, SETEDIT, VIM, FBC and PACIFICC could use batch files or aliases instead of each adding directories to PATH. You also have to run EMACS in its own dir twice to let it self-set-up... - there should be more apps for the OPENGEM GUI in the distro - TELNORG is a copy of TELNET, ZCAT/GUNZIP are copies of GZIP, so using aliases would save some space in those cases... - to be able to use 4DOS HELPCFG, you have to de-UPX 4HELP first - some big packages that might be put outside the default selection: XHARBOUR (Clipper clone) 8 MB, OWATCOM (OpenWatcom C) 30 MB, FPASCAL (FreePascal) 31 MB, KRaptor 11 MB, Image MAGICK 8 MB, Free DOOM 21 MB, VIM (several packages) 20 MB - if you do not install those, the other 200 packages need only 100 MB space. - SHARE is more or less only needed for Windows so it could be configured to be loaded only for some boot menu items If you know more problems with the FreeDOS 1.0 install: Mail us :-) Eric -- Crystal Reports - New Free Runtime and 30 Day Trial Check out the new simplified licensing option that enables unlimited royalty-free distribution of the report engine for externally facing server and web deployment. http://p.sf.net/sfu/businessobjects ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] Thank you to kernel developers for new kernel 2038
Some years ago I thought that DOS was more or less dead. So I am very happy that there are people how continues. Many thanks, I will test it after my final exam next week.
