That is a very bad hack. Since Freevo polls for drive changes very 2
seconds, your are reading from the drive every two seconds as long as
Freevo is running. I don't think the drive likes that over a longer
time.

I'd be tempted to agree.  I have a suspicion that somewhere further down
FreeBSD caches the data.  After the initial poll there is no further
activity.  Maybe you would know more about this than me?
