Do you have the pylirc module installed? i.e. does this work:

barrelhaven:~$ python -c "import pylirc"

If not, you need to get pylirc from pylirc.sf.net and make sure you
have a lircrc file.

irw only checks that your lircd socket is recieving button pushes.

[Freevo-users] Freevo + Mandrake 9.1 + Lircd

2003-03-09 Thread Alan Murrell
Hello,

This is mostly for anyone who is using Freevo with the
lircd RPM that installs with Mandrake 9.x.

I have another interesting problem that I can't seem
to figure out.

I upgraded my system to Mandrake 9.1 (RC2) and decided
to try the lircd RPM (I had previously installed from
source). I got it configured properly, so that when
it is started, and I run 'irw' I am getting the
correct key presses from my remote.

However, when I start Freevo, I get the Freevo menu,
etc., but the remote no longer seems to work (or at
least not with Freevo).

Anyone else come across this?

Re: [Freevo-users] Problems with Shuttle SK41G

2003-03-09 Thread Jason Calabrese
Sorry about the false alarm, I got the on board 8235 audio to work.

I didn't figure it out till I put a sound blaster card in and went
through the instructions one more time.

I had lots of problems trying to get the on board audio to work and at
first I was getting lots of errors. I reinstalled alsa lots of times
and toward the end after I sorted out some irq problems I stopped using
amixer to unmute Master and PCM and instead used alsamixer.

That was the problem you have to use amixer to unmute both Master and
PCM, alsamixer doesn't do it, even if you set the level of both to 100.

I think I'm going to stay with the on board audio for a while and see
how I like it.

Thanks for all the responses.

I missed the beginning of this thread, but just as an FYI, the 8235 is
supported in the 2.4.21 rc kernels (I think I'm running rc4). I did
also make it work with Alsa 0.96 I think, but I'm currently just using
the kernel driver. My 8235 is on a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP by the way, not a
shuttle, but I thought I'd mention it since it is working.

Hello all,

How can I have Freevo look at a m3u playlist and start playing these songs
via XMMS? In addition, have the playlisting as a menu in a Freevo menu. Can
anyone give me some insight as to how to do this?

I am positive someone else has tried to attempt this. Is there another

Well, I don't know *personally, but when i examined the situation, I
ruled out mini-itx systems entirely because the onboard stuff is generally
sub-par. Maybe there are very new mini-itx boards that do a better job,
since there is an increasing interest in using them as 'convergance' boxes.

The onboard video is probably fine to output to a VGA monitor. it's tv-
out that's trickier than it sounds.

I use a microatx system with onboard ethernet, onboard video that I
don't use, 3 pci slots, and one AGP slot. I've installed a G400-dh and an
Audigy, as well as a tv card.

I'm not saying that the audigy is the card to get. Just that it's a card
that can work. i bought mine about a year ago when it wasn't clear which
pci sound cards had really clean analog and functional digital under linux.
One tip i can give you is that aside from vendor-specific OEM versions (for
dell, gateway), all audigy cards are created equal. And then shipped with
different software packages. And one of them has an old LiveDrive in a
fancy new box that sits on your desk instead of a drive bay. (the Extigy
box connects to the same header as a Live Drive, and comes with a special
bracket that breaks it out into an external connector. You can actually use
a LiveDrive with an Audigy. There is no external soundcard.)

The 8235 is a newish southbridge. My 8235-based board was QC'd mere
weeks before i received it. Support will probably improve with time. Maybe
you should just be patient.

I'll try my via82xx audio when i get home. I got the driver working but
never bothered to listen to it. Also, I remember seeing alan cox say
something about updating the kernel driver for those parts.

Well, I have one such motherboard. the reason i didn't respond to the
initial query is because there are problems piled on top of problems. I
guess I'll address them in-line.

I wouldn't say they're not really fully supported, more that they flat
out suck. they're feature-poor and the quality is typically low, so why
bother supporting the paltry extra features they have? But they've
basically worked for me in the past.

What version of alsa? I can't say I've actually *listened to the onboard
audio on my via8235 based motheboard's onboard audio, but the driver
wouldn't load properly until iirc 0.9rc7. I'll give it a listen tomorrow.

The sad thing is that onboard audio usually sucks. I keep wondering why
someone doesn't cobble together a usb dongle that's nothing but an ac3 uart
and a toslink connector. Would be perfect for these applications.

The core, design issue with so-called on-board 'ac97' audio is that the
ac97 spec states that the codec only supports 48khz 16 bit unsigned. the
audio controller (which is not the codec) may accept other rates, but it
must resample them to 48khz 16 bit unsigned before sending them to the
codec. Some DSP designs are good at this - the Audigy for example - and
some DSP designs are bad at this - the SB Live, for example.

The via southbridge chips are almost guaranteed to be bad a this aspect.
And then you have to worry about the analog and power sections of the codec
implementation, too. asking a digital EE to build a clean analog circuit is
like asking a fish to play a piano.

The main problem is I can't get alsa to work with the on board 5.1

errors, but I have no sound. I have set the mixer levels so that isn't
the problem. Also I'm using devfs and /dev/dsp wasn't created and
/dev/sound/ is empty.

Is anyone using a shuttle with freevo? Are you using the on board

Should I give up on the on board sound and buy a new sound card? If so
any suggestions? I only have 1 pci slot and 1 agp slot in the box so I
want to make the most of them.

2003-03-09 Thread Michael Ruelle
damn. ok it was a good guess. I think the thing now to do is to isolate
the components that maybe causing a problem.

If you have a device with a line out (I have a handheld cd player which
has a line out since it is one of those car-cd players.) I would use
your mixing application to unmute line in and then connect the device to
the line in and play something on it, and see if you can hear anything.

if you don't have such a device and you are running X I would try seeing
if you could get xawtv to run and watch tv with it.

basically try to remove freevo from the equation make sure it is not the
problem and then move up to see if it is the sound card, tv card or
something else.

Now I am completely confused about this issue. today I have had twice

Now as far as I can see in both cases the cron-job start the recording

What can be the difference in the system between these two modes?

I'm not rebuilding all the dlls from source (which would be even more
involved). All the rpm build process does is to copy the dll binaries (cp
-av) over to the installation package, and rpm does a post-processing step
to strip and compress. However, I can't find any symbols in the original
dlls either, so I don't think that's the only thing that causes the file
size diffs.
Having said all that, the RPM and tar.gz dlls are still supposed to be
equivalent.
