Everybody has been talking about framebuffer mode for
sometime and I still do not know what it is.

I'm using RedHat booted via grub (but it's the same with lilo).
Currently I boot into vesa framebuffer mode using the following boot
options 'vga=0x314 video=vesafb:ywrap'.
This gives me 800x600-75 resolution and displays fine on my TV (PAL-BG)
using a NVidia GF4 MX440SE w/TV out (composite).

Re: [Freevo-users] Sound Problems - FlyVideo 3000 (SAA 7134)

2003-06-08 Thread Wan Tat Chee
Known problem. The FV3K doesn't automatically unmute since mplayer is
using v4l and not v4l2 to access the driver.

Current workaround, manually (in a console/term window) issue the command
'v4lctl volume mute off' to unmute, and 'v4lctl volume mute on' to mute.

Hoping that this'll be fixed in the next runtime with mplayer patch to
accept 'forceaudio' parameter for TV viewing on v4l2 devices.

Re: [Freevo-users] Questions about the OSD - possible improvements?

2003-06-08 Thread mick
I also have a a usabilty request.. I'm not sure if its possible, but
the devel guys should be able to answer..

When playing a movie, then hitting the menu button, you are given a menu
with options for the play-features, like de-interlace on sound channels
etc, when then selecting play from this menu you are taken to the start
of the movie... Is it possible to be taken back to the point of the
movie you were just at? Maybe this point could be held until you start
the next movie?

[Freevo-users] Recording time is off by 2 hours???

2003-06-08 Thread Edward
I'm trying to configure freevo1.3.2-pre-4
It gives me a strange problem when scheduling a recording:
the guide (TV.xml) has correct time in it, and computer's
clock is correct, time zone seems to be Ok (New York), but
the recording times are off.

For example, I tried to schedule a recording at 20:00.
The on-screen message correctly listed "2003-06-08 20:00
.."
But here is a snip from freevo.record.lst:

2003-06-08 21:00:00,1800,/usr/local/bin/mencoder -snip- -o
/mnt/video/06-08_09:00_-_The_Simpsons.avi ,2 WNYFLP

The recording shifted 1 hour into the future.
Finally here is a snip from from freevo_record.log

started at Sun Jun 8 20:20:00 2003
Got 2 entries in the schedule:

Got old item: "#2003-06-08 -snip- WNYFLP"

Parsed entry 1: "2003-06-08 22:00:00 1800
/usr/local/bin/mencoder -snip-
/mnt/video/06-08_09:00_-_The_Simpsons.avi "
Done, exiting

One more hour.

Any ideas???

Thank you,
Edward

[Freevo-users] Questions about the OSD - possible improvements?

2003-06-08 Thread Tommy Killander
Hi guys,

I have been using Freevo for a while now; and have lately been putting
myself in the position of a Dumb and Ignorant User - by asking myself
questions about usability; comparing Freevo with other consumer electronics
equipment in my livingroom and without worrying too much about
implementation issues.
The biggest issues I think is Startup time (Power On -> Freevo ready to
accept command input) and the reaction time for the remote control (delay
between button pressed on the remote to OSD is updated). The Startup time is
not much to do about - expect keeping the box up and running around the
clock (which is what I do). The second issue is mentioned in the bug report
so I guess that someone is working on that one...

In general I'm very happy with my Freevo box. The best thing is that Freevo
is evolving all the time, so I guess that I will be happier and happier :-)

However, I have the following small suggestions to enhance usability. If
it's in the CVS already I'm looking forward to see it as a documented
"local_conf.py" configurable item (or plugin) in a stable release :-)

1.OSD for 16:9 TVs:
Is there any easy way of changing the OSD for use with a Widescreen (or
16:9) TV ? Is there maybe a skin already out there somewhere for this ?
The default skin of Freevo is good for a 4:3 aspect ratio, but the menues
get "letter-boxed" in different Widescreen modes. It's not an major issue,
but still quite annoying.
I have tried to change the resolution of X11 and Freevo in different ways,
but when I find a setting where the OSD looks good; mplayer misaligns the
output :-(
Is it possible to make a 16:9 Skin to fix this, maybe I should give it a
shot ?

2.Show scheduled recordings in the TV-Guide:
It would be nice to see which programs that are scheduled for recording (box
or text marked in different color?). To avoide questions like "Did I
schedule this recording or not the last time I surfed the TV-Guide ?" :-)

3.Status-bar
It would be nice to have a Status-bar at the botton (or top?) of the screen
with Time, Harddisk Usage (MBytes left or Recordning time left - given a
specified recording ratio), Recording Status (Idle or Recording). There are
probably atleast 1024 other items that might be useful too:)

4.Show Date in TV-Guide
I miss the date in the TV-Guide timeline. It's easy to lose track of days
after pushing the "Arrow Right" button for the 50'th time... By putting the
Date and separator between each 24-hour period its easier to keep
orientation.

Regards,
/Tommy K

2003-06-08 Thread Harm Kroon
Even better is the imdb.py script shipped with freevo for creating fxd files.
I just love it, so for the one who wrote it: GOOD WORK!!

Although the the tcl/tk gui I'm trying to write for it gives me a lot to
think about (not enough Python-programming experience from my side I think:).

i just assembled a vga2scart adapter it works fine. Great picture

Does anyone know how to adjust the modeline to achive a proper pal

But i wan= t to user freevo in fb-mode. I already adjusted my

fb.mode entry mode "pal"
  geometry 768 576 768 576 8
  timings 67796 80 16 37 6 80 6
  laced true
  hsync low
  vsync low
endmode
3. is it possible to boot directly into the desired fbmode? added
follwoing lines to my lilo.conf but it doesn=B4
 work:
vga=3D792

interlace and hsync and vsync are missing but the other values are correc=

[Freevo-users] Trouble playing .mp3, DVDs and audio CDs

2003-06-08 Thread Tom

I just downloaded and installed today's latest Freevo 1.3.2. I'm having some
problems with it:

- I have a bunch of .mp3 files in '/home/tomh/My Tunes'. Freevo sees and
displays their titles. When I select one to play, Freevo just rolls thru the
entire listing and doesn't play any of them. Same thing if I select the
PL:Random Playlist.

- I have a copy-protected DVD (The Sphere). When I insert it, Freevo's main
menu disappears and a blank Freevo screen is displayed (blank as in black
with the Freevo border). The movie doesn't play, and I'm given no message to
indicate why it doesn't play. I can press (esc) to return to the Movie
selection screen. If I press 'p' on the blank screen Freevo crashes. I have
"MPLAYER_DVD_PROTECTION = 0" in my local_conf.py file.

- I have an audio CD. If I start Freevo then insert the CD, Freevo doesn't
recognize that there is a CD in the drive. However, if I first start KsCD
then exit KsCD after playing a few seconds, then immediately start Freevo -
Freevo DOES recognize that the CD is inserted. If I then select the CD
title, Freevo crashes. Subsequent restarts of Freevo will again say there is
no CD in the drive, though KsCD will still recognize it and play it. On rare
occasions, Freevo will recognize that there is a CD in the drive without my
first starting KsCD; when that happens I can select the CD title - nothing
plays and Freevo just quickly rolls thru all of the song titles (but no
crash).

- I like to finish with a positive note: I can view all of my .jpgs!

Re: [Freevo-users] Modifying the aspect ratio of playback for widescreen TV

2003-06-08 Thread Aubin Paul
The short answer is that since Freevo is mostly written in Python, you
can edit the source in your installed copy. Just find
src/video/mplayer.py and edit line 299
Restarting Freevo is all you should need to do. No recompile is
necessary.

The longer answer is that we should probably move this into the
configuration files...

[Freevo-users] Modifying the aspect ratio of playback for widescreen TV

2003-06-08 Thread Ole Andre Schistad
I noticed that one of the parameters that Freevo passes to mplayer when you
launch a movie is "-monitoraspect 4:3". Now that's swell and fine if you do
in fact own a normal 4:3 TV set, but if like me you own a widescreen then
it's highly desirable to play back the film in its proper format, ie 16:9,
due to the reduced letterboxing (or none on 16:9 movies) and the restored
aspect ratio of the image. Unfortunately this parameter seems to have been
hardcoded in the source and doesn't let itself be overridden - adding
the -monitoraspect parameter in your local config file simply makes the
statement occur twice, with the last instance overriding the first, and last
being the hardcoded one.

One would think that this is in fact a parameter that many people would like
to override, so if the deveopers could point me at how I can make the change
I'd be much obliged. Hopefully there's a way of doing it outside of
modifying the source; I'm using the gentoo ebuild package here and so
modifying the source before compiling is not as trivial as it would be if I
were using a straight tarball to /usr/src..

Anyway, some feedback would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Ole Andre Schistad
