have you the same problem not using freevo? e.g.: 'mplayer any.mp3'
have you checked the mixer? e.g. alsamixer?
have you checked the driver? e.g. dmesg or 'cat /proc/asound/devices'

Hi.

Are you using arts in kde? If the answer is yes, disable it or make sure it
uses alsa.
Modern alsa can do dmix out of the box. That means that you can share the
sound card between applications. It doesn't block the card, as it happened
time ago.

[Freevo-users] Comment on new install

2008-08-26 Thread Elizabeth Dodd
I'd like to make constructive comment on a new install. While I know perfectly
well how to make freevo run, it's very instructive to start on a bare install
and see how far the configuration help system has advanced.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/freevo_downloads/freevo-1.8.2 $ freevo
[Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/freevo/main-1000.log'
[Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/freevo/main-1000.log'

no explanation ever given about the logging.

Error: freevo.conf not found

Freevo is not completely configured to start
The configuration is based on three files. This may sound oversized, but this
way it's easier to configure.

First Freevo loads a file called 'freevo.conf'. This file will be generated by
calling 'freevo setup'.

perhaps we should be clearer and suggest that this is run now. It's in the
middle of the paragraph and isn't staring anyone in the face

Use 'freevo setup --help' to get information
about the parameter. Based on the information in that file [which file??] ,
Freevo will guess
some settings for your system. This takes place in a file called
'freevo_config.py'.

not the next step. The next step is to locate the freevo.conf that freevo
setup wrote and edit the wrong choices it made - the channel list and the
ntsc / pal choice.

Since this file may change from time to time, you should
not edit this file. After freevo_config.py is loaded, Freevo will look for a
file
called 'local_conf.py'. You can overwrite the variables
from 'freevo_config.py'
in here. There is an example for 'local_conf.py'
called 'local_conf.py.example'
in the Freevo distribution.

now all i have is a directory ~/.freevo with one entry - freevo.conf
actually i have to locate freevo_config.py, save as ~/.freevo/local_conf.py
and then make edits

If you need more help, use the internal webserver to get more information
how to setup Freevo. To do this, you need to set
WWW_USERS = { 'username' : 'password' }
in your local_conf.py and then you can access the doc at
http://localhost:8080/help/

well actually - this bit doesn't work for me.
even after I find the place in local_conf.py and change the webserver port
to 8080 and su to root it still doesn't start the webserver - and you didn't
tell me the command is freevo webserver start

The location of freevo_config.py is /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py
could you have mentioned this earlier?

Freevo searches for freevo.conf and local_conf.py in the following locations:
  .
  /home/liz/.freevo
  /etc/freevo
  /usr/local/etc/freevo

BIG suggestion
if the webserver is going to provide the config for new users (and this will
increase our user base) in freevo_conf.py let's have the webserver default to
activated and the port set to 8080.

From the tarball, nothing is making /etc/freevo or an /etc/freevo/freevo.conf,
so root isn't ever going to be able to start the webserver.

This is my suggestion for the replacement words above (short, happy for more
editing)

Freevo isn't ready to run yet.
As the regular user please run freevo setup from a terminal.
Then use an editor to change any settings in ~/.freevo/.freevo.conf which
haven't been correctly determined.
Now copy the file /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py into ~/.freevo/ using
this command
cp /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py ~/.freevo/local_conf.py
This file is where you will change your freevo settings.

If you have installed this package yourself from the tarball, change to root
mkdir /etc/freevo
cp /home/user/.freevo/freevo.conf /etc/freevo/freevo.conf
ln -s /home/user/.freevo/local_conf.py /etc/freevo/local_conf.py # my
favourite

start the webserver with
freevo webserver start

(note, mine doesn't start, even after that)

At some point in 2.x, there will be a big effort (by me, if necessary)
to make Freevo usable out of the box, or at the very least ridiculously
easy to get started.

The new config subsystem in 2.x will go a long way to making that
easier. But there's a lot to be said by picking sane defaults, or
discovering sane defaults at runtime.

I'm also really put off every time I do a fresh install of Freevo. It's
not just you. :)

Following the instructions, after you got the freevo svn you should run

[Freevo-users] Multiple lirc devices: Streamzap and Antec Fusion Imon Knob

2008-08-26 Thread Andrea Magatti
Hi all,

i'm using freevo on gentoo from portage 1.7.6.
Everything works, but i was trying to use two different lirc device.

One is a Streamzap USB, recognized as /dev/lirc0 and perfectly working
The other device is the volume knob of the Antec Fusion case, recognized
ad /dev/lirc1, working correctly (tested with irw, the knoib sends
thetrwo events WheelCC and WheelCW.
I've mapped these remotes in /etc/lircd.conf as follows:

begin remote

  name Streamzap_PC_Remote
  bits6
  flags RC5|CONST_LENGTH
  eps30
  aeps 100

  one 889 889
  zero 889 889

  gap 108344
  toggle_bit 2

  begin codes
  00x00
  10x01
  20x02
  30x03

  50x05
  60x06
  70x07
  80x08
  90x09

  end codes

end remote

begin remote
  name ClickWheel

  toggle_bit 0
 begin codes
   WheelCC 0x01
   WheelCW 0x000100
   WheelClick 0x08
 end codes
end remote

and added to freevo lirc configuration file (for me is
/etc/freevo/streamzap) two events as follows:

begin
   prog = freevo
   button = WheelCW
   repeat = 1
   config = VOL_UP
 end

begin
   prog = freevo
   button = WheelCC
   repeat = 1
  config = VOL_DOWN
end

Now the problem:

when i turn the knob, i can see trough a terminal that irw receives
events from /dev/lircd1 (correctly), but seems like freevo (or pylirc)
only watches events coming from /dev/lircd (streamzap socket) and not
from /dev/lircd1 (imon knob socket).

I don't know if the problem is freevo that only watch at the first lirc
device, or pylirc that only uses one device (the streamzap device).

Any hint?

I'd like to make constructive comment on a new install. While I know
 perfectly
well how to make freevo run, it's very instructive to start on a bare install

 [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/freevo/main-1000.log'

no explanation ever given about the logging.

 Error: freevo.conf not found

Freevo is not completely configured to start
The configuration is based on three files. This may sound oversized, but this
 way it's easier to configure.

First Freevo loads a file called 'freevo.conf'. This file will be generated by
 calling 'freevo setup'.

perhaps we should be clearer and suggest that this is run now. It's in the
middle of the paragraph and isn't staring anyone in the face

Use 'freevo setup --help' to get information
about the parameter. Based on the information in that file [which file??] ,
 Freevo will guess
some settings for your system. This takes place in a file called
 'freevo_config.py'.

not the next step. The next step is to locate the freevo.conf that freevo
setup wrote and edit the wrong choices it made - the channel list and the
 ntsc / pal choice.

Since this file may change from time to time, you should
not edit this file. After freevo_config.py is loaded, Freevo will look for a
 file
called 'local_conf.py'. You can overwrite the variables
 from 'freevo_config.py'
in here. There is an example for 'local_conf.py'
 called 'local_conf.py.example'
 in the Freevo distribution.

now all i have is a directory ~/.freevo with one entry - freevo.conf
actually i have to locate freevo_config.py, save as ~/.freevo/local_conf.py
 and then make edits

If you need more help, use the internal webserver to get more information
how to setup Freevo. To do this, you need to set
 WWW_USERS = { 'username' : 'password' }
in your local_conf.py and then you can access the doc at
 http://localhost:8080/help/

well actually - this bit doesn't work for me.
even after I find the place in local_conf.py and change the webserver port
to 8080 and su to root it still doesn't start the webserver - and you didn't
tell me the command is freevo webserver start

The location of freevo_config.py is /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py
could you have mentioned this earlier?

Freevo searches for freevo.conf and local_conf.py in the following locations:
   .
   /home/liz/.freevo
   /etc/freevo
   /usr/local/etc/freevo

 BIG suggestion
if the webserver is going to provide the config for new users (and this will
increase our user base) in freevo_conf.py let's have the webserver default to
activated and the port set to 8080.

From the tarball, nothing is making /etc/freevo or an
/etc/freevo/freevo.conf,
so root isn't ever going to be able to start the webserver.

This is my suggestion for the replacement words above (short, happy for more
 editing)

Freevo isn't ready to run yet.
As the regular user please run freevo setup from a terminal.
Then use an editor to change any settings in ~/.freevo/.freevo.conf which
 haven't been correctly determined.
Now copy the file /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py into ~/.freevo/ using
 this command
 cp /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py ~/.freevo/local_conf.py
This file is where you will change your freevo settings.

If you have installed this package yourself from the tarball, change to root
 mkdir /etc/freevo
 cp /home/user/.freevo/freevo.conf /etc/freevo/freevo.conf
 ln -s /home/user/.freevo/local_conf.py /etc/freevo/local_conf.py # my
 favourite

 start the webserver with
 freevo webserver start

Would you like to update the wiki page
http://doc.freevo.org/QuickStartGuide with your findings?

BTW, using root to get freevo up and running and for standalone systems

Hi.

Copypaste your configuration of the sound, specially AUDIO_PLAYER and
AUDIO_DEVICE.
You should also check the logs. Typically, /tmp/freevo/mplayer-xxx or similar
and see how is mplayer called. You'll see the exact instruction, how freevo
calls mplayer.
BTW, you are using mplayer, right?

Sorry for this late answer, but I really tried long to set my freevo box

It's really a pity to have to run freevo as root, I have the feeling to

Anyway :

Under TV_IVTV_OPTIONS the three settings you're looking for are:
  'bitrate' : 780,
  'bitrate_peak' : 960,
  'stream_type' : 10,
Have a look at the ivtv driver documentation for more info.

Thanks for the imput, but due to the WAF, I have to let the bitrate high :-)
What version of the xine-ui are you working with?
0.99.6
 You indicated that when
you press record, the record starts. Does the record start at the time you
press record or at the time you started watch TV?
You are right, the record start at the begining at the show, not at the
moment you press the record key. But I must admit that this is good for
me : Most time, if I depress the record key, it's allready too late !
 Currently, I am using
0.99.6 that I built from CVS several months ago. If I start watch TV and
wait a period of time prior to pressing record, my VOB file ends up
containing everyhing from the time I started watch TV.

I did continue my tests : If I cat the files one after the other, I
obtain a usable record file ... But this is way too long !

So I tried anither approach :

I built a fxd file (You can see that I started from the sample on the
WiKi ! ) :
cat 2008-08-14_jeudi_19-05_Une_famille_en_or.fxd
?xml version=1.0 ?

This works fairly good, except that there is a time (around 1 or 2

What do you think ?

only watches events coming from /dev/lircd (streamzap socket) and not
 from /dev/lircd1 (imon knob socket).

I don't know if the problem is freevo that only watch at the first lirc
device, or pylirc that only uses one device (the streamzap device).

I don't think that this is the problem. freevo nor pylirc care about
devices, lirc uses a daemon and clients connect to the daemon not
devices. You do need multiple daemons running. see: the section Using
multiple different devices simultaneously on
http://www.lirc.org/html/configure.html

José for his work with rtve.es plug-in and FilmAffinity plug-in and more.
 Torsten for his speak plug-in.
 Adam for updates to livepause.
Valera for lots of bug reports and fixes.

Now that the kaa.notifier code has proven to be reliable this will be
the last release of the 1.7 series. We will now start to concentrate on
updating the plug-ins to remove the code that polls for events from the
main loop. The effect of the all this polling is that the user interface
is much less responsive than it should be and the CPU load is higher
 than it should be.

 What's new in 1.8.2

   * New speak plug-in
   * New mplayer visualization plug-in for audio
   * New video plug-in for streaming programs from rtve.es
   * Updated livepause for graphic OSD for vlc
   * Updated OSD for alpha blending between screen updates
   * Updated mplayer TV and video plug-ins to correct MPLAYER_VO_DEV_OPTS
 handling
   * Updated mplayervis plug-in to be able to set the frame rate

What's new in 1.7.9, these are also in 1.8.2

   * New mouse support for Freevo
   * New TV plug-in to browse by genre
   * New video Spanish information grabber, FilmAffinity for movies
   * New video plug-in, fillscreen, to crop, scale and change monitor
 aspect for video items
   * Updated freeboxtv to be in the TV plug-ins
   * Updated mplayer audio plug-in to show a pop-up when caching
   * Updated mplayer to handle subtitle and audio cycling using the
 SUBTITLE and LANG events
   * Updated recordings manager to improve its performance

There is a lot of additional fixes from lots of people and the full list
 is available at http://doc.freevo.org/ChangeLog.

 Finally the release statistics:
Release 1.7.8 to 1.7.9 there are 7 new items and 87 changes.
Release 1.8.1 to 1.8.2 there are 19 new items and 167 changes.

 Have fun,
 Duncan

Hi all,

I've updated the website with this info and just wanted to say thanks in
particular for the new fading effect, the tv browse by genres, these two
are big improvements. The speak plugin is a really great addition too
and I'm looking forward to getting the time to test vlc overlay.

John

[Freevo-users] Upgraded to 1.8.2

2008-08-26 Thread Jim Duda
I've upgraded to version 1.8.2 from 1.8.1

I downloaded and untarred the 1.8.2 tarball.

then: python setup.py install --record installed_files

Any attempt to play a video file with mplayer and I get this error in
the log file:

Here is the file I have:

lroom# l /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/freevo/video/plugins/mplayer.py
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23439 Jul 22 14:20
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/freevo/video/plugins/mplayer.py

What can I do to help debug this?

I tried to downgrade back to 1.8.1, but that doesn't seem to work.
Doing a python setup.py install in the 1.8.1 tree doesn't want to
downgrade to 1.8.1, I appear to be stuck at 1.8.2.

Re: [Freevo-users] setting up USB storage

2008-08-26 Thread Jim Duda
Evan,

I have autofs running.

My local_conf.py has:

plugin.activate('usb')
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='video', args=('USB
plugin.activate('usb')
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='video', args=('USB Device 1',
'/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='audio', args=('USB Device 1',
'/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='image', args=('USB Device 1',
'/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='video', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='audio', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='image', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))Device 1', '/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='audio', args=('USB Device 1',
'/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='image', args=('USB Device 1',
'/mnt/usb/device_a'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='video', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='audio', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))
plugin.activate('usbstorage', type='image', args=('USB Device 2',
'/mnt/usb/device_b'))

my /etc/auto.master has:

/misc /etc/auto.misc
/net-hosts
/mnt/usb /etc/auto.usb --timeout=2 --debug

my /etc/auto.usb has:

device_a -fstype=vfat,rw,gid=100,umask=002 :/dev/sda1
device_b -fstype=vfat,rw,gid=100,umask=002 :/dev/sdb1

With the above, I can hotplug a USB drive into freevo and it will be
recognized.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Re: [Freevo-users] Upgraded to 1.8.2

2008-08-26 Thread Jim Duda
If I comment out line 302 of video/plugins/mplayer.vo, all is well now!

vo.remove('') causes a crash on my end.

Thanks for the new release!!

Jim
