[Freevo-users] XML (fxd)
Easy one: What does "fxd" mean? Tougher one: I am using freevo pre4 -- perhaps I should be using a different version if things have changed... I think perhaps the mplayer-options in an fxd file are not properly being passed to mplayer. I'm not sure where to look to determine either... Here's the situation, please try this, and see what your results are: I had a dual audio .avi (It turns out the file was indeed dual audio, and OK) Using the snippet of .fxd file from Aubin (which was formatted correctly from his memory -- impressive): Balto.avi I get no sound. Using my workstation, running "mplayer -aid 2 Balto.avi" gives me the movie in English. So I know that -aid 2 is the correct setting. Since eliminating the mplayer-options part gets me the movie played in another language, I *know* it's passing *something* to mplayer -- just not what I want it to. My next step was to strip out the other language. I did (man mplayer/mencoder is great...) it easily, and then freevo of course played the right language. Since for some reason english was incredibly quiet (encoding problem, not freevo) I want to pass mplayer an option to increase the volume. The following seems to do nothing: Balto.avi (email will add a linebreak, but none exists -- the tag is all on one line) I get very quiet audio still. I *could* reencode and increase the gain -- but that seems silly. Like I mentioned above, I *know* it's passing freevo something, but I don't know what. Any tips? Please try, and see if you can increase a file's audio with the above audio filter... maybe it's just me Thanks! -Shawn -- Shawn Powers Tech Guy bla bla bla --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner. [Freevo-users] Documentation (again)
Hey, [EMAIL PROTECTED] remember when you typed: > That is our biggest problem. We like to code. We add something, > announce it to the list. Some stuff big enough finds it's way to the > WiKi. But we are missing some _real_ documentation, with all features In a large "foot in the mouth" venture, I now see the virtue of the wiki. :) I have never liked wikis, but darn it -- it sure is good in this situation. Here are my current thoughts: I have started reading some python books. Realize my mind often doesn't work like a programmer, but I want to be able to read some code and follow what's happening. I had no idea what *happened* when freevo ran. I've been looking in the code and trying to figure stuff out. (I've added a few minimal things to the wiki, and will continue to add more as I figure stuff out) To be honest, I don't *want* you guys to document stuff. Code, code, code, code!!! I am trying to learn enough to understand what is happening. I'm going to try to look at some more freevo code, and document the particularly thin parts. What needs documentation the most right now? I'm working on the XML stuff now -- it was a big thrill when I had figured out what to add to the fxd file to select a different audio track. (It turns out I think something is wrong with the .avi -- but when my trial matched Aubin's suggestion, there was great jubillation. :) Please lets stick with the wiki. My job often causes me to be busy in spurts. (ie, see last 3 months...) The wiki allows for collaboration, which is good. If I am unavailable, I sure don't want documentation to stop! Do you guys read the wiki diffs as they are made? (the changes get mailed to somewhere...) If I interpret code wrong, and dont' have the hardware to test on -- I want to make sure I'm being double checked. Incorrect documentation is worse than no documentation. :) Sorry for this long email, but I want to make sure that the programmers can continue to program. :) (Oh, and please keep commenting code when possible, especially if I'll be perusing it to try wikiing out some documentation) Thanks!!! -Shawn -- Shawn Powers Technology Director Inland Lakes Schools 231-238-6868 x174 http://techcorner.inland.k12.mi.us --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner. I am installing linux on my main work computer today, and I'll play with the file in mplayer to see if I can straighten out what's happening. [Freevo-users] Dual audio .avi
I have an .avi file, which I downloaded from the internet (moral, ethical, and political issues aside...) This file (Balto) has 2 audio tracks. Of course, the track I want (english) is not the track that plays. I have been trying to figure out how to format the .fxd file so that it plays the other audio track, and I'm having difficulty. On the wiki, it describes what to do if the audio is on another file -- but I'm confused about what to do if it's all in one file. Here's my .fxd file, slurped up with imdb.py (great program!) Can anyone help? Obviously you won't know what audio track is what (neither do I) but where and what would I change to try different settings until I understand what the Dog in the movie is saying? :o) Thanks, -Shawn --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] kid]# cat Balto.fxd The information in this file are from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). [Freevo-users] RE: last email about mythtv and freevo
(sorry for the subject line, I deleted the email, and am now replying...) I'm not sure about time shifting, but realize as well that freevo is at least a degree of magnitude easier to install than mythtv... Hats off to whomever decided to install all the runtime, etc inclusive. And as far as "frontend and backend" things are concerned... I hope freevo keeps itself free from dependencies. It's so simple to set up. That got me to wondering, I know the mention of some sort of simple databasing was discussed a while back to facilitate some more elaborate functions (especially where jukebox type smart playlists are involved) -- does there exist a simplistic (preferably python) database engine that could be included in the freevo.tgz as part of the runtime? ...just curious -Shawn -- Shawn Powers Technology Director Inland Lakes Schools 231-238-6868 x174 http://techcorner.inland.k12.mi.us --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner. But that I'll try to figure out for Just a note on lirc -- there is no way to get it to work and install unless you do a kernel recompile. (please correct me if I'm wrong) All the RPMS, DEB files, etc just don't cut the mustard. I had success with using RedHat 9, recompiling the kernel (the only thing I changed in setup was to optimize for i686), installing the new kernel, then lirc compiles and installs without a problem. NOTE: make sure you do NOT have the lirc RPM installed, or calling the lircd daemon will call the wrong instance. I think that if for no other reason, projects like www.freevix.org are great because they can include lirc kernel modules by default. I really wish that the movix project was a bit more compatible with freevo (the author has looked I guess, and there are some caveats) because movix does a great job of hardware detection across a wide variety of systems. movix + freevo would be quite the killer app/distro. [Freevo-users] CD1 + CD2 = CD ?
Hello all, Many features I would love to see already exist in freevo and I just didnt' know it, so perhaps this is the same: Is there a naming convention that will force freevo to show 2 files as one file and play them back to back? Here's an example: Goonies CD1.avi Goonies CD2.avi If freevo would show: Goonies and play them as a playlist, that would save me a lot of reencoding! BTW, our school is out on Monday so if the guy that stepped up and did the documentation wants some help, maybe I'll have time to help now. My contract doesn't go into the summer, so I should have some time. :) -Shawn PS. One more odd thing... Did keybindings change? [Freevo-users] Blank screen, and also key bindings...
I have 2 questions. I'm starting to feel guilty, because it seems that on this listserv, my question to answer ratio isn't anywhere near even. :) 1) I have freevo (precompiled, all in one, binary tarball) running on RedHat 9.0, using x11 and an i810 integrated video chipset. My screen blanks after 20 minutes or so, and I can't figure out for the life of me how to make it stop... I realize it's really a linux question, and not a freevo question, but MAN it's driving me nuts! When watching a movie, the screen does not blank, but when it's done playing, the screen goes to black until I press a key. I think I have disabled all APM stuff, both in bios and in startup, but I seem to be missing something... Any kind linux buffs willing to share *how* to stop power management from shutting off my screen? (I also commented "option" "DPMS" out of XF86Config, because it looked like it had to do with power management... 2) Is it complicated to change the behavior of the menu navigation in freevo? For example, if I wanted to change it so that when pressing down at the bottom of a screen would go to the next page, rather than needing to press "right" or select "Next page" and enter.. ? In the grand scheme of things, it's obvious this isn't very important, but I'm curious if it is able to be customized or not. [Freevo-users] Brightness / Contrast
Hello all, I have a *nice* video card in my freevo machine, giving me the ablility to use 24bit color, and WOW what a difference. The video quality is incredible. My problem, is the the geforce2 card I'm using doesn't have svideo out -- so I have to use a scan converter (a little box that connects to VGA and converts it to svideo) -- but it ends up with a dark picture. In a playing movie, using the number keys (I forget the ones, but the ones that control brightness and contrast) adjust it perfectly -- but I can't get the configuration to load by default. The funny part, is that I know when I add the -brightness 20 flag into the freevo_config.py file, it is working (almost) because although the movie starts dark, when I touch the keys to adjust it, they immediately "pop" to the setting in my file. I guess, at every movie, I could just go tap the keys and get it to work -- but it seems a silly step. :) Any idea why the configuration doesn't "activate" when the movie loads? I just started using freevo -- and it's *great!* My setup is a bit odd -- I have the PC behind my entertainment center, and an old parallel port CDROM visible to put VCDs in. The problem is that freevo doesn't handle the CDROM properly. I dont' think it's worth trying really hard to make it work *normally* -- but is it difficult to add (or change) a menu item to play VCDs? ie, rather than the top "TV" option, could I change it so that if I selected that menu option, it tried to start mplayer playing a VCD on a specific device? (for me, /dev/pcd0) I have tried many things to make it work "normally" but it just doesn't seem to ever think there is a CD in. It can open/close the device -- but just doesnt' recognize anything in it.
