[Freevo-users] Re: how to test/debug problem with wakeup/shutdown plugin in my box?

2006-01-21 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hallo Claudio,

sorry for my late answer, I must have overlooked your question and deleted your
original mail already.
I just found it by chance while I was looking through the archive for something
else.

Probably it is too late, and you already solved your problems (hopefully ;-))
Just in case, you are still waiting for an answer:

You can test, if wake-up via acpi is working by the following:
1.) Set the wake-up time by
echo "2006-01-21 14:00:10" >/proc/acpi/alarm
Change the time to the planned wake-up time.
(Usually the date part is ignored, and only the clock part is important.)
2.) Check in the bios that your box is configured to wake-up on alarm
3.) Shutdown and see, if it wakes up at the configured time

If you have more questions, just ask! Hopefully I can help.
I promise to have a close look on the mailing list the next days.

Gruesse
Tanja

In your local_conf.py there are two lists
VIDEO_MPLAYER_SUFFIX and VIDEA_XINE_SUFFIX
where you can define, what kind of files should be played by which player.
If some kind of video is in both lists, then it will be played by your
VIDEO_PREFERED_PLAYER. (Also configured in local_conf.py)
I guess the right thing for DVD would be '.vob' or something
similar...

Hope this helps a little

Or better, the WwgscAF (Women, who give a shit about computers, Acceptens

which is a little to long I guess...

More important is the WAUF (Windows User Acceptens Factor)
which is also quite high.
My boyfriend loves freevo!

Full-featured cards support the video4linux api, so "nexTView EPG" should work
with them. (Of course, only if the teletext is broadcasted over DVB.)
But maybe I misunderstood that : http://nxtvepg.sourceforge.net/intro.html
Anyway, as there are almost no full-featured DVB-T cards around, that topic is
only
of academic interest for me ;-)

Keep up your good work!

Re: [Freevo-users] Hints on using DVB-T

2005-08-10 Thread Tanja Striepling

Hi there,

we are using dvb-t for almost a year now, and it is working
great. so maybe I can give you a few useful hints.

As you managed to watch TV with xine, the difficult part is already done.
That means you have a valid channel.conf in .xine (.mplayer).

For freevo integration:
1.) Put the following in your local_conf.py
VIDEO_GROUPS[0].group_type = 'dvb'

2.)TV_CHANNELS is not really different from analog TV, I guess.
Something like:
TV_CHANNELS = [
( 'ard.de', 'ARD', 'ARD' ),
( 'zdf.de', 'ZDF', 'ZDF' ),
( 'wdr.de','WDR','WDR')]

3.)EPG:
Unfortunately there is no programm for fetching the dvb-epg.
And with a budget dvb-card without mpeg-decoder you can not
use next-epg, as far as I know. (Please tell me, if that is not right anymore!)
But "tv_grab_de_tvtoday" is working!
You must use the cvs version, because tvtoday changed there interface a week or
so ago, so that the older grabber is not working anymore.

4.) Recording:
We are just dumping the dvb-stream to disk without any reencoding,
because our hardware is not very fast, but we have lots of disc-space.
We watch most of the recordings soon after the recording, and delete them
afterwards.
Our recording command is:
VCR_CMD = CONF.mplayer + ' -dumpstream -dumpfile %(filename)s
"dvb://%(channel)s"'
TV_RECORDFILE_SUFFIX = '.ts' recording command is:
Files are around 1GB for 1 hour recording.
NOTE: You will need to copy your channel.conf to .mplayer for this to work.

5.) Watching recorded shows:
You must add 'ts' to the list of filename suffixes that should be played with
xine/mplayer:
VIDEO_XINE_SUFFIX = [ 'ts','avi','vob','mpg','mpeg','rm', 'divx', 'ogm']

Greetings
Tanja

For the record:
We are using a Pentium III. with 730Mhz (!) as standalone freevo box.
For TV we use a Nova-T Dvb-t card. Our Dvb-t signal is very good,
because we can use an old antenna on the roof of our house.

The whole system and freevo works very good.
Recording is no problem (mplayer -dumpsteam).
Watching recorded streams is also no problem, even while a recording is going
on.
Only when a recording starts or stops, then there is some jerking for a
minute.
But this is not in the recorded stream! It just happens while watching.
We do not use "Live Tv" because the time the Dvb-t card needs for tuning is too
long,
so zapping is no fun with such a card.
But we got used to recording everything we might want to watch (disk space is
cheap)
and watch it whenever we want. This is a very convenient way!

Greetings
Tanja

Hi,

sorry but I cannot see how your question is connected to the wakeup plugin.
The wakeup plugin should boot your pc a few minutes (depends on
BOOTTIME_PADDING) before the
next recording starts, that includes the TV_RECORD_PADDING!
So if the show start at 3.00 am, it will start a few minutes before 2:45 am.
But in the case you descibed in your mail, there would/should not be a shutdown
between the two shows.

Actually I do not know, what would happen in such a situation.
But this is a question concerning the recordserver not the wakeup plugin.

Sorry, that I could not be more help for you

Greetings

Sorry, I do not use nvram-wakeup, so I never tested that part.

It is copied and pasted from some earlier work of Hans Meine.
I just checked that code again and found that I forgot to include
one helper that is needed for the reboot. Sorry!
I now included it in the new version of the package.

The nvram-wakeup part works, -or as least should work like,- this:

1) When nvram-wakeup is called to configure the nvram for the new wakeup,
the exit code is checked
2) If the exit code of nvram is 256, then the bios needs a reboot
3) A file is written to the freevo cache dir as a flag that this is a reboot
which should be followed by a complete shutdown
4) The system is not shutdown but rebooted instead
5) When the system is booting again, the rebootflag helper (which is now
included with the package) checks for the flag.
6) If it finds the flag, it removes the flag and shuts down the system this
time completly
7) If it does not find the flag, than this is a real boot and not just a reboot,
the helper is doing nothing then

So you need to run the rebootflag helper in one of your startup scripts.
Just copy rebootflag.py to /path/to/your/freevo/src/helper
and run it as freevo reboot
There is also some help available when you call freevo reboot --help.

I am sorry, but you are in the unhappy position to be the first person to
test the nvram part. :-(
Run freevo with DEBUG=1 and have a look at the logs.
There should be messages as like what command is called for nvram-wakeup
and what the exit code was

I hope you get this running.
Feel free to send more questions or maybe even suggestions for improvement.

Greetings
Tanja

Hi

I am confused, this does not look like an error from my plugin,
but maybe there are some strange interferences between the plugin and
your system.
First of all, is this also happening when the idletimer plugin is deactivated?
Second, what exactly do you mean with "not xmltv actualized file"?
Was everything working correctly before you installed my plugin?

Sorry, I do not have any idea at the moment, but with a little more information
concerning your system I will try to help.

Greetings

Thanks for testing.
I am happy to hear that it is working now.

The electricity saving was actually the reason,
why we were wanting this feature,
afterall we are just poor students :-)

BTW, there will be a similar feature in freevo2.0.

Re: [Freevo-users] Composite input on tv card

2005-05-08 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi,

there is the possibility to choose another input in local_conf.py:
#INPUT = 'television'
INPUT = 'composite'
Maybe this helps you...

Greetings
Tanja

Re: [Freevo-users] Re: new plugin for freevo1.5.3: automatic shutdown and wakeup

2005-04-25 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi Jacques,

Here is a new version of the plugin.

For me that seems to work...
at least it works with the image slideshow screensaver.
I had some problems to activate freevoscreensaver,
everyone of the possible methodes crashes.
With some hacking I got the image slideshow screensaver to work.
What screensaver are you using?
Did you also experience any problems?

It would be nice, if you could test the new version and give me a feedback.

Hope everything is now working!
Tanja

Very strange!
Maybe this is a better solution:
if not os.system('egrep "(%s)" /tmp/wakeupshutdown.ps' % searchstring):
instead of:
if not reasons=='0'

Please let me know, if that is working. so that I can change the version for
download.

Tanja

Ps: I am sorry, but I have not had the time for looking into the screensaver
problem yet.

2005-04-20 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi Jacques,

ARG, I was afraid of that. I am not using the screensaver,
but I had the feeling that there could be problems with that.
Probably the idletimer is not polled while the screensaver is running,
because it is only polled, when the menus are shown.
For now you could deactivate the saver, it should work then.
But I will try to find a way around that.

Anyhow, thanks a lot for your feedback!

Hi list,

I did fix a small bug in the routine that checks for external programms.
This is the new version.

Moreover I put a description and a download link in the wiki.

Hi Don,

So now it is working, and you do not have that trace again?

Did you look through the local_conf.py file, you are using now?
Maybe there are more things you want to change.
The example file comes with everything marked with a #, and then
you have to see for yourself what variables you need and remove the #
whereever it is needed for your setup...

For satelite tv, what kind of input are you going to use?

An analog satelite card, (I do not know if there exists such a thing, but who
knows)?
If yes, have a look at the section about analog tv in the wiki!
An digital satelite card, DVB-S?
Have a look at the DVB part of the wiki!
A settop box (receiver)?
Probably you use this with a analog card as input device, so have a look at the
section about
analog tv in the wiki, but maybe also the section about external tuners can be
a help for you.

Some thoughts to your new trace:
>The following is what happens with clicking on 'Watch TV' from the main menu

Probably because the tv part is not yet configured correctly

>You are using version 5.13, changes since then:
>Version 5.14:
>Add IMAGEVIEWER_DURATION for auto slideshows

You can add this variable to your local_conf.py if you like, but this is just a
warning, nothing serious...

>Error: VIDEO_SHOW_DATA_DIR not found

Not a problem, I think...

>ROM_DRIVES: Auto-detected and added "('/mnt/cdrom', '/dev/hdc', 'CD-1')"
>ROM_DRIVES: Auto-detected and added "('/mnt/cdrom2', '/dev/hdd', 'CD-2')"

This is working as it should

>WARNING: Could not initialize PyLirc!

So your are not using lirc (for a remote).

>To search for covers you need an Amazon.com Web Services
>icense key. You can get yours from:

Do you want to use this plugins?
If not just deactivate it by deleting the corresponding lines in your
local_conf.py.
If yes, have a look at the documentation for it!
But this is also not what leads to your problem...

The trace itself seems to be the result of an uncorrect configuration of the tv
stuff.

Hope this all helps you a little bit!

Re: [Freevo-users] need help installing freevo

2005-04-16 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi

what did you set as TV_RECORD_DIR in your local_conf.py?
Should be the place, where you want to save your recordings,
something like:
TV_RECORD_DIR = '/home/freevo/tv'
replace the above with your chosen directory.

What about VIDEO_ITEMS?
Here you can give a list of several dirs or just one:
VIDEO_ITEMS = [('Movies','/home/freevo/movies'),('Shows','/home/freevo/shows')]
or just:
VIDEO_ITEMS = [('Movies','/home/freevo/movies')]
again change this to your likings.

>From your trace I would guess, that you did not set these two.
Then freevo tries to set the TV_RECORD_DIR to the first directory in
VIDEO_ITEMS,
which is also empty...
Just a guess.

Hi there,

with the help of the work of Hans Meine and Georg Künzel,
I managed to create a addon for automatc shutdown and reboot of freevo.

The addon provides a improved shutdown plugin as a replacement of the original
shutdown plugin. At every shutdown it programs the system for a wakeup at the
start time of the next scheduled recording.
At the moment two different wakeup methodes are supported: acpi and nvram

Moreover this package also contains a second plugin named wakeupschedule.timer,
which shuts down the system automatically after a certain time of idleness.

For more information have a look at the README!
The setup should be easy...

We tested this plugin with acpi as wakeup methode for a week now,
and did not find any problems so far.
I copied and pasted many things from Hans Meine's work, so I hope
the nvram part is also still working...

Any comments are welcomed!
Tanja

Hi

Did I understand you right?
Your lirc is working and the "normal" commands (ENTER, SELECT, PLAY, REW, etc.
) are working as they should?
So what you are looking for is a way to reach the additional mplayer commands
from inside freevo?

Did you try this in local_conf.py:
#
# You can add more keybindings by adding them to the correct hash.
# e.g. If you want to send 'contrast -100' to mplayer by pressing the '1' key,
# just add the fol

Re: [Freevo-users] (111, 'Connection refused')

2005-03-28 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi

the message "111, Connection refused" means that there is no freevo
recordserver running.
But I think you do not need the recordserver for watching TV.
My guess is that this message is not your problem...

For a try you could start the recordserver with "freevo recordserver",
then the message should disappear.

But if I am right, then this is not connected to your problem.
Try turning on more debug by putting the following in your local_conf.py:
DEBUG = 1
CHILDAPP_DEBUG = 1

Maybe you find a hint then.
Probably your setup is not correct, unfortunately I cannot help you there,
because I am using completly different hardware.

Good luck
Tanja

Re: [Freevo-users] nvram-wakeup integration status ?

2005-03-17 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi Georg,

I am playing around with your script at the moment...

I am not sure yet, but there might be a problem with taking the wakeup time from
/var/cache/freevo/upsoon.
It seems as if this file is only updated, when a user opens the TV-Guide inside
of freevo.
That would mean:
1.) It is not updated, when one has run "freevo schedulefavorites"
2.) If you leave your freevo box unattended for a few days,
things from the "This Week" part of upsoon, never will become "Today" or
"Tomorrow",
and thus freevo won't wake up for them

Maybe my assumptions are wrong here, I will investigate this more.
Any comments?

Regards
Tanja

No problem with pre-recorded things!
Freevo uses mplayer, xine or tvtime for watching TV, so anything which is
possible with
those applications should also work in freevo.
Thus as far as I know there is no pause/rew of Live TV available.

I don't know. Sorry!

Hallo Georg,

Thanks a lot. That seems to be exactly what I was looking for.
As I have to set up nvram-wakeup first and I am not at home next week,
it will probably take some time before I can give you a feedback. Sorry.
But I promise to give you and the list a small note about my experience as soon
as possible.
Strange that no one else seems to be interested in this...

I also had a look at your webpage. It is really good!
(There is just one small thing, you may want to correct:
At the page about the not solved issues, there the menu overlaps the text.)

Great work! Hope this will become a fully intergrated plugin for freevo2.0.

Tanja

RE: [Freevo-users] Problem with MPlayer failing to play media

2005-03-15 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi

You do not need gmplayer, mplayer is enough!

I also use MPlayer1.0pre6 on a debian system, no problems here...

You can get more debug information if you set the following in your
local_conf.py
DEBUG = 1
CHILDAPP_DEBUG = 1

Maybe you find a hint there.
Moreover you can find the exact line which freevo uses to start mplayer with
all options
in the debug output.
Try that command from a shell.
Maybe it is one of the options freevo uses, that is responsible for your
problems...

Good luck
Tanja

Hi Georg,

I am very interested in that topic.
Yesterday I found that discussion about nvram on this list,
and I also was wondering what happened to that plans.

Would you mind to share your script with me?
This is one of the features I'd really would like to have,
and I hope for the release of freevo2.0,
but who knows when that will be...

Thanks

Hi Andreas,

I think this is described in the wiki, but nevertheless...

In local_conf.py the following variables might be interesting for you:
DIRECTORY_CREATE_PLAYLIST=['image', 'audio']
DIRECTORY_ADD_PLAYLIST  = []
DIRECTORY_ADD_RANDOM_PLAYLIST  = []

just put 'image' in the list, if you want to have the particular variable be
active for images.

The first one creates a playlist from all items in the dir. You can start this
playlist by selecting one image, pressing NEXT will change to the next image.
You can also reach this by pressing e, there should be appropriate entries in
that menu then.
The other to variables create an extra item in every image dir, to start the
playlists.

Other variable that might be interesting for you, are:
IMAGEVIEWER_BLEND_MODE = 1
IMAGEVIEWER_DURATION=2

Without setting image duration, the slideshow will only continue when you press
NEXT.

Hope that was what you were looking for.

Grüße
Tanja

Okay, not much of an error message. Maybe you can post a little more?
Is this happen with every channel?

Did you figure out how to set up the TV_CHANNEL part in local_conf.py?
It is supposed to be like this:
TV_CHANNELS = [ ( 'XMLTV_ChannelName', 'Freevos_DisplayName',
'Mplayers_ChannelName' )]
"Mplayer_ChannelName" is the name of the channel as it is used in your
channel.conf for mplayer.
(This asumed that you want to use mplayer as tv application.)

What kind of TV card do you have by the way, dvb or some analog one?

You can turn on more debug information by DEBUG=1 in your local_conf.py.
After that you should see in the shell the full command line that freevo uses
to call mplayer,
maybe you find a hint there

Actually this is a misunderstanding, freevo is not designed to watch TV.
(In my opinion "Real-Time TV" is even one of its weakest points.)
It is a controlling frontend for all kinds of media applications.
You can use it to watch movies (various formats), listen to music (also various
formats),
record TV, watch TV and much more.
It is designed to be used with a remote and a TV as display, but can also used
other setups.
But all in all it is "just" a frontend, which means it uses other applications
to perform its task.

So you can choose between different applications for watching TV,
those applications are inserted into freevo as "plugins".
There is mplayer, which is the default and should work for almost everybody.
Then there is tvtime, which only works for analog Tv (as far as I know)
and xine, which works only with DVB at the moment...

Hope you can solve your problems.
Regards
Tanja

Ps: Don't forget to improve the wiki, when you have the solution!

[Freevo-users] auto picture playlist/slideshow

2005-02-15 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi Justin,

You need to set the following variable in local_conf.py:
IMAGEVIEWER_DURATION
by default it is set to 0, which means, you have to press a key to continue
with the next image.

I have just fallen over this by chance while looking for something else.
Hope it helps you.

Hi

maybe this is what you are looking for:
OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP
and
OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_CLOSE
in local_conf.py

I use the first variable to execute a script to configure my tv-out.
That also has to be done while X is already running.
The script is executed during freevo's startup.

Hope that helps

Re: [Freevo-users] Xine plugin

2005-01-28 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi

What is the version of xine freevo detects?
You should find something like:
"xine.py (114): detect xine version 9903"
in freevo's output.

Maybe you have to turn on debug first by putting the following two lines at the
begin of your local_conf.py:
DEBUG = 1
CHILDAPP_DEBUG = 1

I remember that some time ago I had a similar problem. I found that freevo was
not able to detect the version of xine at all (version = 0).
The reason was that one of the options I put in XINE_COMMAND and XINE_ARGS_DEF
was not available and therefor xine returned a error messages
from which freevo could not detemine the version.

Hope it is that easy...
Good luck

Tanja

Unfortunatelly my camera is not a usb storage device, so two weeks ago I
decided to test the gphoto plugin.
I got the error message "ImportError: No module named pygphoto" and after some
research I found the following documentation
in the CVS version of that plugin:

" The gphoto plugin is broken right now. Reasons for this are that pygphoto
doesn\'t work with the latest version of gphoto
and this plugin also needs to be adjusted to the new Freevo gui design. Since
no developer uses this plugin, you can either fix it when
you need it or use a different way to access your photos."

So yes I am sure, it is broken...
I will add some notes about that to the wiki, but it sounds as if there is not
much hope at the moment that it will be fixed soon.

Mine is also not very good. Let's hope some native speaking guys will join our
work and correct our pidgin ;-)

If it's not clear and maybe not even working anymore, we should not move it to
the new wiki.
Leave it to someone, who is using that, to write something new for the new wiki.
I do not think that we should move something blindly and untested.
For new users it is quite annoying to find that the Documentation is "lying".

That plugin is unfortunately broken, so we should definitly not move it to the
new wiki.

No, I think we do not need that link. But maybe we could put a more general

Hello Victor,

Sorry, I don't know.
I just tested that on my system (Debian)
and found that the installation from the deb-package
also does not include any translations at all.

I only get the English menus although my environment ist German.

Does anyone here know, why that is so?
Is it much more difficult to package freevo with the foreign language support?
Or was it just a mistake?

Anyway, maybe you want to use the "source" tar.gz instead?
That was fairly easy, at least for my system.
The dependencies should all be fullfilled, from you rpm installation,
so hopefully no more problems there.
Then you download freevo-1.5.2.tar.gz. Unpack it somewhere and
then just start freevo from that directory by typing ./freevo.
I don't even need to run any "make" or something.
If that works, you can move the directory to a good place like
/usr/local or something and make a link like
/usr/local/bin/freevo->/usr/local/freevo/freevo
so that freevo is in your path...

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo Menu

2004-12-21 Thread Tanja Striepling
Hi,

the only file you should edit is your local_conf.py,
everything else would mean hacking freevo itself.

Freevo's configuration is done via freevo_config.py and
local_conf.py, where freevo_config.py contains the defaults
and should not be changed.
Put your changes in your local_conf.py instead, that will
overwrite the things in freevo_config.py.

What exactly do you want to change?
Maybe someone here can give you some useful hints.

Greetings
Tanja

I am also interested in that stuff, but hadn't the time for it yet.
I was worried that it will need a lot of "try and error" before it is working.

VIDEO_ITEMS should only contain 'real' directories, which are located on your
harddisk.
So put the directory there where your ripped DVDs are...
But even if you let this empty (VIDEO_ITEMS=[]),
your drive should appeare in that menu.

Do your drives appear in the audio menu?
I hope at least that part of your freevo is running, as it should.

Just to be sure, set HIDE_UNUSABLE_DISCS = 0 in local_conf.py.
That should not be the reason, but who knows.

Did you change anything in freevo_conf.py? (You should not!)

Have a look at the output of " freevo plugins -l".
Is the plugin rom_drives.rom_items marked as active?

Tanja

Ps: You can get more output by setting DEBUG = 1 in local_conf.py.
Maybe you find some hints then.

So the drive is detected and even the DVD is detected, that's something...

What about audio disks, do they play as they should?
Or do you also have problems there?

Is there a link from "/dev/dvd" to your drive "/dev/hdc".
I once had a similar problem with audio cds, and a link form "/dev/cdrom" to my
drive was the solution.

So have a look at the output of:
ls -l /dev/dvd
It should have something like: /dev/dvd ->/dev/hdc

If not, do the following:
rm /dev/dvd
ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd

Maybe that helps

Oh...hm... you are right there is a extra package pytho2.3-dev for
Debian. But unfortunately that's not all, what is missing.
The version of libimlib2 in Debian/sid is to old...

Okay, thanks for your help.
I guess I will forget that for the moment...

By the way, freevo is great. There are still some things missing, as
far as I can judge that at the moment, but on the other hand there
are already lots of very useful features.

Keep at it!
