RE: [Freevo-users] xine not playing dvd's, says they're 'encrypted' - try this
You don't actualy have to use xine to play dvd's in 1.3.4 its somewhat hidden aways in the main confing file, but you can actualy use Mplayer to play them, But first you need to try in your shell.. Mplayer -dvd (with a dvd in the drive), if it works let me know and I will tell you what to hash(#) out to get it working. I found that xine would never seem to work, but mplayer works perfect even with encrypted disks. Paul Yes, Mplayer works fine with dvd's...I just don't have the dvd menu functionality in Mplayer that works in xine. It would be nice to keep xine if that is the only way to get dvd nav menus. As for freevo, I'm using 1.3.2 as when I tried to install 1.3.4 from the distribution files I had problems with it (it locked up on main screen, graphics looked blocky, wouldn't respond to keys on kb, had to end it's process to shut it down). I'm still trying to figure out how to use CVS...extreme newbie there and no docs have been clear enough for me to leap into it. [Freevo-users] xine not playing dvd's, says they're 'encrypted'
When I try to play a dvd (in this case a US purchased Star Wars Episode 2) on xine, it complains that it cannot play it because the disc is encrypted and mentions some blurb about legal status of css. Any ideas how I can make this work? Mplayer plays the dvd's just fine. I'm running RH8 and have following Xine modules installed: xine-ui-0.9.13-1.i686.rpm xvid-0.20020412-4.i686.rpm xine-dvdnav-0.9.13-0.i686.rpm libxine0-0.9.13-1.i686.rpm libdvdread-0.9.3-ogle1.i686.rpm libdvdnav-0.1.4-fr0.2note2.i386.rpm libdvdnav-0.1.3-0.i386.rpm libdvdcss2-1.2.1-1plf.i586.rpm libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.fr.i386.rpm compat-slang-1.4.5-2.i386.rpm (needed for dependencies) alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.i386.rpm (needed for dependencies) aalib-1.4rc5-fr1.i386.rpm (needed for dependencies) Thanks, Keir --- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf ___ Freevo-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freevo-users

rohbags wrote: anyways, what u need is some lines added to ur /etc/modules.conf file, something like this: (bttv options text removed for space) (i always read the drivers source and copy all the options to the modules.conf as comments, helps for tweaking later, and for times like this when you dont want to explain every litle thing :P ) just add some similar options lines to suit your hardware in your modules.conf file, use modprobe bttv to load and check ur syslog for errors etc, if probs unload with rmmod bttv, and try again with different options. I'm not sure what options are available for my card or what's in the drivers. Do you mean you read the bttv driver source and experimented until you found what worked with your card? Here's my status: My card may be autodetecting, though behavior suggests not flawless. When I run xawtv and it is set to 'television' for 'video source' and 'TV norm' set to 'NTSC', all I see is a bunch of static in the top 1/2in. to 1 in. of 'tv' display window. If I change the video source to use S-video or composite1 (I am feeding output of my camcorder to those inputs for testing), I can see that xawtv is trying to display the image, but it's like the horz. sync is not right (image is indistinguishable). Then I change the 'TV norm' to PAL or NTSC-jp or really any of the other choices and I start to get an image that is squished vertically into about the top 1/2 of the display window and colors may not look right. Then I switch 'TV norm' back to NTSC, same picture remains (the 1/2-height squished one), I double-click window title bar (which turns display off and just title bar remains), then repeat double-click on title bar and display window is re-created---but now it looks normal. At this point I can switch the camcorder to playback and the video is played back like normal...just no sound from linux box (sound on the linux box works fine for everything besides xawtv--which hints that sound settings for bttv aren't right). OK, with all that said, I know diddly-squat about bttv driver options or how to find out what my card is capable of (as it has no linux info., just WinBlows). RE: [Freevo-users] xine not playing dvd's, says they're 'encrypted'
You might consider getting libdvdread from http://rpm.livna.org. Your libdvdread package is crippled due to DMCA and other similar laws. If you live in a country without such draconian legislation, then you can legally use the libdvdread package from the repository in the above URL. Cheers, Jason. Thanks for the info., I installed it and it came up just fine in xine. However, when I tested the same in freevo, the same message is being issued saying the DVD is protected. What gives? [Freevo-users] activate/install capture card bt878-based
I need some hand-holding on capture card issue. I'm using RH8 and Kworld KW-TV878RF-PRO capture card. Card isn't being autodetected. It is listed in the BTTV info. as card=78 - Jetway TV/Capture JW-TV878-FBK, Kworld KW-TV878RF . How do I 'install' this card in RH8 so that I can test it with xawtv or some other program before trying to use it in xine or mplayer so that it will work in freevo. (I've read through the bttv wiki and info on other sites but nothing is really making sense to me...newbie) Thanks in advance for your help, Keir --- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf ___ Freevo-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freevo-users

RE: [Freevo-users] Help (was: xine not playing DVD's,Mplayer instead?)
splashing water to put out flames :( keir johnson wrote: I actually tried using 1.3.4, but it doesn't execute properly---hangs, so I had to install only other version I had downloaded which was 1.3.2. Dischi wrote: One common problem. 'It hangs' doesn't help much. If I don't know what happens, this will never change. I installed freevo 1.3.4 fresh on RH8 from sf download page, (this was almost 3wks ago so memory is fuzzy). When I ran freevo, graphics were 'blocky' instead of smooth and it wouldn't respond to keyboard input. I had to actually kill the process to shut freevo down. So I replaced it with the first version I had ever loaded (1.3.2)--- when I installed 1.3.4, rh8 was a fresh install, freevo had not been loaded yet. I'd like the dvd menu support that xine is supposed to use, but I'm getting sick of 'fixing' each component that is necessary for freevo (already worked alot to make mplayer work right). A second common problem: Freevo has good support for the hardware the developers have, they take care of it. But since I don't have more than one graphic card (and don't need to), users have to help users. You fixed each component. Good, than share your results with the rest. _Everyone_ has write access to the WiKi on the homepage. If each user shares the resultions they have, it would much easier for new users, Freevo could integrate this knowledge. I was contemplating writing a summary of my procedures for install as I'm going to almost duplicate this first system and setup a 2nd freevo box for myself (first one for my Dad). I considered doing this because I've had such a hard time finding such step-by-step info. ducks to avoid more flames I know the developers put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into coding and refining freevo, but if the info. isn't available to help newcomers adopt freevo then your base of 'testers' that COULD respond to your pleas for input are going to go to that same SMALL group of developers that may be concentrating on fixing code or on their own uses and limited hardware that they have already got trouble-shot and working. Someone wrote a howto for Freevo. He asked for help to make it better. I guess the answers are below 10. It would be nice to have his info linked from the freevo pages (not buried in the documentation only but from a links page. I know documenting is a pain in the ass as you stated, that's why I haven't started my list of procedures...the other reason is I don't know if each step I'm doing is going to work or break something (and I've been very limited in spare-time to work with this project---between my business, wife, kids, etc.) I'm still facing a problem with my capture card (BT878-based) where I'm only getting garbage in top inch or so of picture and no real picture---that will I'm sure burn-up countless hours researching and fixing whatever the problem is. Ask here. If you know the answer some day, please add it to the docs to avoid that the next one has the same problem. I was planning on submitting a plea about the capture card next. I've got ZERO experience with the damn thing in linux and info. on them has been very limited (not in freevo mind you, I'm talking linux in general). I was having trouble even finding how to run xawtv to see if the card generates anything, then didn't know enough to trouble-shoot the darn thing and submit an intelligent inquiry anywhere (freevo or elsewhere). This is a very challenging project for those without significant experience in linux and the toughest part is figuring out 'where' the question should be asked...is it too general a question to burden the freevo list with, is it a problem in mplayer and should go to their list, is it a red hat problem and should go to an appropriate list there, etc.. I do appreciate the effort and responses you guys have all given on my problem and I will try to contribute where I can as 'repayment'. I take my hat off to you developers for working hard to create freevo from scratch and piece this complex puzzle together. [Freevo-users] xine not playing DVD's,Mplayer instead?
I've got a problem with xine playing dvd's...it doesn't (says they're 'locked')--both inside freevo interface and directly within xine. I am in the US and my DVD is a normal US DVD. I've already got Mplayer working with DVD's just fine. Is there a setting where I can tell Freevo to use Mplayer to play movies instead of xine? I'm running RH8.0, Freevo 1.3.2 (1.3.4 wouldn't cooperate at all!), xine 0.9.13, and Mplayer 0.90.
