Yes, most UPS's do.. and some even have their own linux software to shut your system down.. if they dont, you can proboblly get it running with NUT, (Network UPS Tools http://www.exploits.org/nut/ ). I'm not going to blame Alan Cox since he's, well, a brilliant guy, but mistakes sometimes to happen. My positive experiences with ReiserFS have only been on stable kernels. My website recieves a fair number of page views and it's a low end machine, but thanks to ReiserFS, it never goes down for long and the performance is pretty good. I would try the stable kernel and see how it works for you before rebuilding your file systems. It's also possible that corruption is caused by incompatibilities between your motherboard driver and Reiserfs. Re: [Freevo-users] Partition type for Freevo?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 xfs is designed to handle large files speedily. It is in some kernels, some not. If you compile your own kernel, you can put it in if you patch the kernel. It's not too difficult to do. That said, I still recommend against xfs, since it still has data loss issues. Reiser is good these days, although it still has some data loss problems as well. JFS is not really worth talking about at this point. Ext3 is nice, although slow and bulky, since it journals EVERYTHING, but you are less likely to lose data with ext3. It also has the bonus of being able to be able to be read/written to by anything that supports ext2, which nearly everything besides windows does. - -stefan Alan Murrell wrote: Hello, "industrial strength" systems like XFS and JFS. Re: [Freevo-users] Partition type for Freevo?
It's funny this thread should arise because I now think that my recent crash was due to filesystem corruption (maybe not the crash but probably my inability to boot from my root fs). I too am using Reiserfs. I have experienced several crashes lately, which I have been attributing to excesive heat with my new (small) case. Last night I updated my kernel to 2.4.21-rc7-ac1, and after that I was hard pressed to crash. Maybe that's because it had a long time to cool off... Anyhow, in any event it seems I have a case of filesystem corruption, possibly from my use of the -ac patch though and not neccessarily to do with reiserfs. -Rob Aubin Paul wrote: I wouldn't switch from Reiserfs, especially not to ext3; Reiserfs has some big advantages namely, it's ability to deal with many small files (mp3s, caches, etc.) and it's recovery stuff. Ext3 is a stopgap in my mind; adding journaling to an existing filesystem makes conversions easier, but if you can start with a proper system, I'd go with Reiser. RE: [Freevo-users] Partition type for Freevo?
Hi, I use ext3 (http://www.redhat.com/support/wpapers/redhat/ext3/index.html#toc). My filesystem has survived hundreds of "un-clean" system restarts with power cycling without any failure. UPS is supported by most Linux distros nowadays - check out the "UPS How To" for more info. Its a standard feature on all the UPS I've ever used... usually a serial port or more recently USB... You can get all sorts of info from the UPS... run time, voltage, load etc (depending on the type of UPS)... On this note, does anyone know anything about UPS? Can they be configured to send signals to the PC saying, 'hey, i'm not recieving power anymore, you need to shut down now..'. I can't see how UPS could be any good if this isn't a standard feature.. If your not around when the power goes out, how can you hsut the PC down?
