Here's a schematic and parts list on building your own USB IR receiver.

This is a bit late, but I found one from a German company called
irtrans. In fact, I've got one more by luck than good judgement when I
replaced my tower for a HTPC case. I can't recommend the case as it's a
real bastard to assemble but the ir receiver is great.

The web page is http://www.irtrans.de/en/index.php and the case is at

I picked up a homebrew serial receiver a while back and it was totally
awesome. Extremely sensitive, picked up all my remotes. Unfortunately,
when I bought a new motherboard last year, it only came with one serial
port. So I'm using the IR receiver on my PVR350. It works fine, I've
no complaints.

I'll probably build a new htpc next year, so I'm in the research stages
right now. I'd like to get rid of my serial transmitter because, well,
serial is so 1980's. :) Also when I'm sending a command via lirc, the
system takes a big hit, and if I'm playing a video, there are a few
dropped frames.

That'd be cool. The ideal situation is to have both and IR receiver and
transmitter on the front of the case, and the transmitter would be
powerful enough to bounce off walls. The IR blaster on the Bell
Expressvu receiver rules -- it can control a VCR sitting on top of it by
bouncing the light off a wall 4m away.

The website for the Tira says it has both xmit and receive, though I'm
not sure where the receive sensors are as the picture is so small. But
the main problem with it is its price.

Right, not cheap. I have one of their IR receivers (serial) that I
still use on one of my boxes (I got it a few years ago) and it works
well. I was looking at getting an OEM version to mess around yet.
Better yet, I'd like specs on a USB one that I could homebrew and wire
up to a header on the mainboard.

Nice. But it's sure not cheap. Twice what I paid for my Actisys. I do
like the OEM version and the idea of being able to mount this internally
(somehow). Have you any experience with this device? How well does it

Yes, I actually mean transmitter. It is needed to control my external
cable box.

Cheers,

Do you do mean transmitter or receiver? If you actually mean *transmitter*,
what are yo using it for in the context of Freevo?

I'm using the Marmitek USB/RF PC Remote Control. It is a Radio Frequency
receiver device (433 MHz band) that connect via USB. The remote control uses
RF signals to communicate, which is better than IR since obstacles do not
block the signal. It can be used with lirc. Read www.t3i.nl for more info.

Richard.
