I did 205 mph on a motorcycle on the Bonneville Salt Flats; decades ago of

A year or so after we moved from Las Cruces to Seattle, when our son was

what you probably expected.

Well, to contrast that a bit, I've had guns pointed at me (aggressively) 3
times. (Many more "playfully".) None of them pulled the trigger, luckily. But
that just proves that they do NOT take guns seriously. They are more toy, less
weapon ... which makes them even more dangerous. Also, 2 of my friends from
high school were murdered, one with a gun, one with a knife.

This country is more violent than privileged white dudes might have you
believe. Jochen would be wise to take vacation in a civilized country.

2021-10-22 Thread Frank Wimberly
Jochen,

I've spent more than 1/3 of my 78 years in New Mexico including the last
22. I've never been shot at, I've never seen anyone be shot, and I've
never known anyone who was killed or wounded by gunfire. I used to shoot
rabbits when I was a teenager but I regret that very much.

The police I've interacted with are courteous and try to be as helpful as
possible. My original comment was said tongue-in-cheek. I should have
used a smiley.

No. If you read the article carefully, sometimes guns with blanks and guns
without bullets can kill people, and it has happened befofe on movie sets.
It was a terrible and tragic accident. I'm sure we'll learn what went

2021-10-22 Thread Gary Schiltz
Jochen - I'm sorry that you feel as unsafe as you say about guns in the
USA. My own feeling, based on living in the States from birth until age 49
(13 years ago), is that the danger and direct impact on society from
firearms is much exaggerated by the news media. Like so many issues of our
time, our two-party winner-take-all system of elections has made guns a
political football. The same goes for the perception of how police officers
respond to citizens, including motorists, that they deal with. My own
experience has been that police in the USA are courteous and respectful. Of
course, I'm. a white guy who grew up with a respect for the police, so
others' experiences may differ. The USA certainly has its share of
problems, but it's still a pretty darned nice place to live and visit.

Jochen,

That we should not see you because you fear being gunned down in our streets
seems like some sort of over correction. Why don’t you at least go through
the visa process so that once in Canada you can cross the border if you have
the impulse? I am never in Santa Fe in the summer so you would have to drop
down the border into New England to see me.

No, we were wondering about a vacation in the US next year, but I do not feel
safe because of this gun problem. If we rent a car, a police man stops us and I
do a wrong movement he will probably shoot me, right? This would never happen

Re: [FRIAM] Breakfast in Santa Fe

2021-10-22 Thread Steve Smith

"guns don't kill people, bullets do"...

When I first moved to Los Alamos, the armed Protective Force there had
just built a new gun range which included a course for training in "live
battle" (think SWAT).   They had elaborate protocols using blank
ammunition in place to prevent live-fire accidents, but within the first
couple of years, one of the guards ended up shooting his best friend
(also a guard) by accident.    I never learned the details of how this
happened, but obviously one or more live rounds made it into the
shooters weapon.

They shut those exercises down, at least for a few years... they may be
back to those.

If that context, and the movie set context can't achieve zero-defect
safety why would any bunch of yahoos running around playing cop/army
with their expensive toys be any safer on average?

No, we were wondering about a vacation in the US next year, but I do not feel
safe because of this gun problem. If we rent a car, a police man stops us and I
do a wrong movement he will probably shoot me, right? This would never happen
in Europe. At the moment we are considering going to Canada in the summer,
either Vancouver or Toronto, not sure yet. -J.

The Guardian article on this incident mentioned Brandon Lee's death under
similar circumstances. And claims the autopsy turned up an actual slug.

Regardless. Nobody wins in any of these scenarios. Our gun fetish is a problem.

There is so much speculation about this, so I would like to add a bit of my
own. A trustworthy source tells me that "blank" bullets come in many
different forms. Some of them can be dangerous at close range. Also, it is
not uncommon for something to get clogged in the barrel of a gun, and when
the next blank fires it shoots the clog like a bullet.
I am speculating that it was actually a supersonic clog that shot out of
the gun instead of a bullet. I say this because it does seem effin nuts
that live ammo would find its way onto a movie set.
