FVWM: the oldest fvwm version I could find

2008-03-18 Thread Harald Dunkel

Hi folks,

Waiting for some builds I started to google for the past of fvwm. Here are
a few details (if you are interested):

The oldest version of the "old" fvwm (pre 1.0) I could find was 0.91b,
created on July21st, 1993. The sources are here:

ftp://ftp.uu.net/.vol/5/unix/linux/sources/usr.bin.X11/fvwm-0.91b.tar.gz

The whole code is 289 KByte uncompressed. (2.5.25: >16 MByte.) After a
few tweaks to the Makefile it still builds fine even with gcc 4.2.3 on
amd64. And it seems to work.

From the man page:
===
NAME
fvwm - Feeble(?) Virtual Window Manager for X11

SYNOPSIS
   fvwm [ options ]

DESCRIPTION
Fvwm is a window manager for X11. It is a derivative of twm, redesigned
to minimize memory consumption, provide a 3-D look to window frames,
and provide a simple virtual desktop. Memory consumption is estimated
at about one-half to one-third the memory consumption of twm, due pri-
marily to a redesign of twm's inefficient method to storing mouse bind-
ings. In addition, many of the configurable options of Twm have been
   removed.

The name "Feeble(?) Virtual Window Manager" was used because "Small
Window Manager" would have the same abbreviation as the "Saber Window
Manager", which already exists. In any case, fvwm is small, and any-
thing that is small must be feeble!

The README included in the code mentions an even older version: fvwm 0.82, but
this seems to be gone :-(.

Have fun

Can you try to pinpoint a CVS date where it changes from working to not
working?

Sure. AFAICS the problem came up with fvwm-snap-20080210. The
version of the day before seems to work better in this case.

Attached is a diff between both versions.
