Re: Canon/Epson scanner recommendations
I have the canon 670u. It sounds very similar to another canon model that someone else was talking about it another post. My scanning needs are pretty simple. Most stuff I scan winds up on the web, so high resolution isn't an issue there. Occasionally I print out some of the stuff I scan with it and the quality is decent. Also, the fact that it gets it's power from usb makes it very handy. I got it like a year or so ago for 99 bucks. It didn't come with drivers for os x, but I downloaded a photoshop plug in called canoscan scangear 7.0, which has worked flawlessly under os x. I am not sure if there is a standalone driver for it. The plug in has as many features as the standalone program for os 9 did. --- Andrew Main [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I wish to purchase a Canon/Epson USB scanner to connect to my Pismo. I'll be using OSX most of the time, so I'll need to have OSX connectivity either via Vuescan, Photoshop 7 or Graphic Converter X. Can anyone recommend me one? I'm looking at the lower end, since my scanning needs don't require a high-end unit. I've been using the Canon N656U with my Pismo and OS 9; works very nice, especially for OCRing material out of books, which is most of what I use it for. However, it doesn't look like Canon will be releasing native OS X drivers for this model. There's been some discussion on MacInTouch recently (http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreader10.2pt40.html and on to part 41) about Canon's erratic OS X support. Here's what I wrote there: Canon's OS X scanner support intentions remain confusing. A week ago (as I recall) the download page indicated no Toolbox support for the 650/656/1220 generation scanners, but today it says Download Driver Now. When I click the link, though, what is offered is a new, different application named ScanExpert (instead of the earlier CanoScan 1.3, which runs only in Classic), which promises scanning in Mac OS X in 'Native Mode,' but also seems to require Photoshop or Elements (as noted in previous posts), which sounds like a plug-in, not an application. In contrast, the link for the later/current 670/676/1240 scanner generation offers a newer CanoScan, v4.1.1.0X, which does seem to be a stand-alone application like its earlier version (which I'm presently running in OS 9 with a 656 scanner). If they've updated CanoScan for the later scanners, why not for the earlier ones, rather than writing a whole different app that offers less capability? The psychology of computer hardware/software manufacturers continues to mystify. I'm planning the move to OS X soon, and have purchased a Canon N670U, partly for its apparently better X support (also its blue cover matches my Pismo better than the silver 656). I use my present Canon scanner mostly for OCR, with the bundled OmniPage SE, which works very nicely. Unfortunately, I gather it hasn't been updated for X; I hope it will run in Classic. Anyway, I would recommend the Canon scanners, which are small and light, and the USB power is very convenient. All I have to do is put the scanner next to my Pismo and connect the USB cable, and it's ready to go. But for use with OS X, get at least one of the 670/676/1240 generation, or one of the newer LiDE series. Outpost has recently (mid-November, mid-December) had refurbished 670s (90 day wty) for $40; appear to be out again, but they may get more; I heard about it thru DealMac.com. They can also be found for about the same price on eBay. Andrew Main -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: New Form Factor?
I read the original post on this topic and I strongly encourage everyone to send feedback to Apple. Everyone says that Apple has never listened to customers, and that has been a very resistant memory to dislodge, but it has and is changing. Apple now includes Provide Feedback in the Applications Menu of many applications including iTunes, iCal, and others. They have posted Feedback areas on their website and they have posted and emailed requests for users to give feedback based on the purchase of a new Apple product or visiting the Apple Knowledge Base. In my opinion the Titanium PowerBook G4 is a great looking laptop computer, does it feel as rugged as my Pismo? No. Does my Pismo feel as rugged as a Wallstreet? No. Is an iBook somewhere in between? It seems so. I don't think Apple plans to change the case design anytime soon, but then I could be wrong. I do believe that much like the decision to maintain the existence of the Apple Menu which had been discarded in Mac OS X Public Beta - that massive user feedback does impact their decisions. If we wanted a different PowerBook I believe they would make it. Although never as promptly as we might demand. Mobility Electronics T35 connected to my PowerBook Ti
I have a Mobility Electronics T35 connected to my PowerBook Ti G4/667 Running 10.2.3 with 1 GB memory. The T35 adds three PCI slots and two USB channels. It also has a dual channel IDE controller on board that the PowerBook does not recognize. I have an UltaTek 66 with two 60 GB and one 30 GB drive in one slot an ATI Radeon 7000 Mac edition with two LCD monitors installed in another. All works well with the following exceptions: 1. Installation of ANY video card in the expansion chassis causes all menu extras to disappear. Upon wake from sleep they reappear. Do a safe boot and they are fine. This was tested with a clean install of 10.2 upgraded to 10.2.3 (no third party extensions). 2. Access times of the disks attached to the UltraTek 66 are drastically reduced if anything is displayed on the monitors attached to the Radeon 7000. Hide the windows of applications displaying through the radeon and access times are back to normal. Any ideas how to eliminate these two problems ? OSX question
I'm installing a new HD in my Pismo. How do I copy my existing Pismo HD (OSX) to my beige G3 (OS9) via my network? I tried what I did in the past, just dragging my Pismo HD icon onto my G3's network icon, but all it does under OSX is make an alias. I read something about Target Disk mode. What is it? Thanks Mike This will only work if your beige G3 has a firewire port. Connect a firewire cable between the machines with your Pismo turned off, Start it up and hold down the T key. This should cause your Pismo's hard drive to be mounted on your G3's Desktop. Treat it like any volume on the G3. Joe Ellis -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I disagree. My TiBook took a fall that broke my LCD on my Pismo 2 years ago. What happend? The case cracked. Right in the lower left corner by the battery. The case is designed for a few things: 1) size, 2) heat dispersal and 3) give-way for 'accidents.' I already got the quote on the replacement cover: $275. I would gladly spend that instead of $2000 for a new display (this laptop has already gotten one of those this year -- not my fault and my friend replaced it in cash). -- Ryan Coleman Coleman Web/Internet Services [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cwis.biz Has any one supposed it lucky to be born?
