Big Al arrived

2003-03-28 Thread Steve Fuller
My 17 AlBook arrived this morning. All I can say is WOW. :) Running
software updates right now. The screen is incredibly readable even off
center. For being as thin as it is, it feels quite solid. It's
incredibly quiet when running. I had it in my living room and my Tivo
was much louder. Even sitting here at my desk, it's almost completely
silent.

This has been discussed over the last few weeks. IIRC, it does affect
 some
Pismos, but not all of them. Apparently, the problem doesn't get worse.
Short of replacing the LCD, I don't remember if there was much you

 of

Actually it has been discussed over the last few years on this list and
elsewhere as a Pismo problem. Mine has a little problem with pink
screen which clears up after a few seconds, but I intend to have the
Pismo worked on before the AppleCare expires in August (will get
battery replaced, too).

Take them back to the store you bought them and try to get your money

I have been able to use the Coleman Igloo battery pack for 14+ hours.
You plug in the auto power adapter into the cigarette lighter-type
recepticle...weighs under 4lbs comes in a carrying case about the size
of a 6 volt lantern battery. I forget the cost-- $30 perhaps?

If you don't have the auto power cord you can use an inverter from
Walmart $30-40ish and use the yo-yo. The cabling can get awkward so
take along the velcro cable ties!

Be forewarned, you'll spend a lot of extra time in check-in. I kept all
the electronics in a vinyl lunch bag for ease of inspection.

On a note of bragging--Last year my son and I traveled around the world
for 4 months. We used the G3 Lombard to stay in touch, play CD's, watch
DVDs on beaches from Crete to Iceland to Japan and in between, stored 4
gigs of photos we took along the way. With the LifeView Tuner we caught
some local TV programs as well. I left the spare battery at home and
used the rental car for my main power source. We never found an
internet cafe to burn a CD for backup. If I go again, I'll carry a
small USB burner.

I've got a battery pack too which I use with a car adapter. The car
adapter is better for two reasons. It is less cumbersome, one gizmo
instead of two. It's also more energy efficient. Converting from
12VDC to 120VAC and then down to 24VDC throws away a fair bit of
power. When you are operating off a battery pack it could make a
difference.

http://store.powerbook1.com/mceacandautp.html

Has car adapters on sale for $30 which is the best price I've seen by
a long shot. I bought one (before the sale, @%$^%^@) and it works
fine. They also have AC adapters for $45 which is a good price too.

The really weird thing is that I think the battery is actually charging

Re: pizmo battery suggestions-Coleman Power Pack

2003-03-28 Thread E.L. Jones
Hello Jim, Doug List,

As to the Coleman Power Pack; I've had mine for 3 years and I got it at
a military exchange in the states. I misspoke when I said
Coleman-Igloo. I note that Coleman and Igloo are two different
companies with similar products. I know my power pack is a Coleman
brand . It comes in a vinyl case and has a transformer for home
charging ( Coleman/Igloo also make a home power supply--120VAC to 12VDC,
for powering their electric coolers but this isn't the one I spoke about.

Perhaps a camping or video supply company has a similar product. It is
a no brain-er to build if you have the time. Radio Shack has
rechargeable 6 volt lantern gel cells ($20 ea)which could be wired
together and recharged from a 12/13 volt transformer etc. It was nicer
to have everything already together in a smaller package via Coleman. If
you are going to DIY-- consider using the 6 volt Solar Landscape cells
from a home supply store etc. in tandem (series) . They are a bit
smaller then the lantern cells...but off hand I don't know the power
reserves / tech specs on them.

Good Luck and Sorry I don't have any fresher information.
Elton

Initial BigAl Book impressions

2003-03-28 Thread Steve Fuller
Mr Grenier had requested that I type up some impressions when I had
some more time. I've been using BigAl for most of the day now, and I
have some time now after a days worth of playing.

The biggest things that I've noticed have been the quality of the
keyboard, and the lack of noise from the machine. I have been sitting
in my living room and the disk drives on my Tivo are louder than this
notebook. The fan has not turned on yet, but I haven't done anything
that I would call processor intensive as of yet. The keyboard is quite
solid and a pleasure to type on.

The keyboard illumination is quite cool, and it can be controlled from
both System Preferences, as well as from the F8 thru F10 keys. The
sensors are in the speaker grills. When the sensors notice a lack of
light, they light the keyboard and they dim the screen. Quite quite
cool.

The screen is, as you'd imagine, immense. I feel like I have more
screen real estate with this notebook than I did with my G4 and a 19
display. Shrinking the dock bar has made the screen feel that much
larger. The screen has great visibility from the sides as well as from
the front. I'd say that you could easily have 3 people watching a movie
on the screen and all would have a good picture. The screen opens
quite easily. It's balanced quite well and there's not a lot of effort
to open it. There are two latches that help hold the lid shut. Both
appear to be made of metal and are opened with one button. No dead
pixels that I can tell.

I carried the notebook to a friend's office today and, even without a
case, it's not a burden to carry. It's no heavier than the Dell 5000
notebook that I use for my office. Due to it's size and the lack of
texture on the surface of the notebook, it can feel a bit awkward in
your hand. I will not be carrying this around without a bag, or at
least a sleeve of some sort. I am going to a friend's house tomorrow to
try out a new bag he bought for his laptop. If that doesn't work out, I
have seen some good reviews of the Brenthaven case from Apple. The case
itself feels quite solid, considering that it's only an inch thick.
There's a little bit of play in the latch when the screen is closed.
The lid wiggles up and down a small bit.

Wireless reception is good. I'm currently only using 802.11b here at
home, but the reception on this notebook is better than I'm getting on
my wife's Lombard with her Cisco Aironet card.

App performance seems quite good so far. I've been using a 400Mhz G3
Lombard, and a PIII-500 for the last month, so a lot of things may seem
quicker.

So far I haven't found many things that I can complain about. The mouse
button doesn't sit quite level from one side to the other. It's not
that it's loose, but one side sits even with the main part of the case,
where the other side sits up a bit higher. I wish that the case had a
*bit* more texture to it so that my hands could feel like I had a
better grip on the case when I'm carrying it. There was no Firewire 800
to Firewire 400 adapter included with the unit, so I really only have
one firewire port that I can use right now. It would be nice to have
had one firewire port on each side of the machine. There is a USB port
on each side of the machine. The track pad is a bit on the touchy side
when I'm using it.

So far, I'm quite happy with my purchase. I sold off 4 other machines I
had, and added some cash to bankroll this. I feel that I'm definitely
going to get my money's worth out of this laptop. I have found OSX
equivalents for most of the apps that I used to use. I have a few
things to track down yet, but that shouldn't be an issue.

Hopefully this will give anyone who hasn't received their unit yet, or
is thinking about ordering one, an idea of what to expect. I'll be more
than happy to answer any questions either here in the list, or via
email.

Steve Fulller

the screen that ruins the whole screen no matter what I'm doing.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that. I'll quit complaining about the mouse button
now. :)

I'm sure you've heard this already, but for completeness' sake: have
you tried 'massaging' the stuck pixel? A friend of mine's Inspiron
(with a beautiful hi-res screen) had a bright blue stuck pixel. I was
able to get it out by pressing gently on the screen (so that the colors
distorted). maybe this could fix big al?

Re: Coleman Igloo Battery Pack???

I have a friend that got one and loves it at Target as well. I still
went with an extra battery for my Pizmo instead so as to avoid any
...hey what 's that thing at the airport.

Okay, I'll bite. A $30 battery pack is just too good to pass up.
But I can't find it anywhere! Coleman has nothing like that (that I
could find) on their website. Would you send more details?

I don't know what stores are in your area but...

I bought mine at a Kragen auto parts store (not a Coleman but
basically the same thing). I've also seen them at Target and Walmart
 department stores.

They very in features and capacity but don't vary that much. Most
now a days have cables and clips to jump start your car with. I
disconnected them on mine as it makes it a neater package and I don't
like the idea of those clips getting shorted. Some have a light
built in. The one thing I wish it had was three cigarette outlets
built in. I have a splitter plugged into it but that's just one more
thing to pack along. My typical use is the laptop via a car adapter,
the cell phone charger (for going on line in the field) and a radio
scanner. I mainly use it for computing while railfanning (going out
 and watching trains roar by).
