Re: Initial BigAl Book impressions

2003-03-29 Thread Anne Judge
So far I haven't found many things that I can complain about. The mouse
button doesn't sit quite level from one side to the other. It's not
that it's loose, but one side sits even with the main part of the case,
where the other side sits up a bit higher.

MacAddict just had a review of the 12 and theirs came with a
trackpad button that sat a little high (sounds like both sides of
theirs were like the high side of yours) - they took it in to an
Apple service provider it was fixed under warranty.

Please send the image along. I have already started guessing what it

use it for a desktop picture (MacOS 9.2.2), perhaps... :-)

Re: Firewall? Internet Security?

2003-03-29 Thread David Clark
Please forgive my question if it sounds too elementary, but can
someone please tell me what I can do to prevent hackers from invading
my Pismo? What programs can I use, and what exactly can I do to
prevent it from happening? I have DSL (Earthlink), and was told that
over 85% of hackers are never detected.

Not elementary at all! Security is quite a complex topic, depending on how
paranoid you are and what you want to do.

If you're running OS X on your Pismo, it comes with a built-in firewall
(ipfw). OS 10.2 comes with a built-in way to manage the firewall, but it's
very basic -- go to System Preferences - Sharing - Firewall.

My preferred fiewall manager is BrickHouse, which you can pick up at
http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/brickhouse.html -- it lets you
set up custom rules to block common hacks, log them, allow specific IP's
to access your computer, etc. It comes with some useful default rules.'

There are lots more -- SunShield and Firewalk come to mind -- go to
VersionTracker and search for Firewall.

Depending on your needs and how paranoid you are, you may want a NIDS
(Network Intruder Detection System), which doesn't block traffic based on
specific IPs or Ports so much as it does based on suspicious activity.
Again, search for NIDS.

Before you do anything with any of these: Make sure you know what you're
doing and do it on your actual machine, not while logged in remotely!
Firewalls can really screw things up if they're configured wrongly.

I hope that answers your question!

Dave

p.s. An interesting thing to do is to view /var/log/ftp.log -- Before I
tighteted down my firewall, I found lots of random people trying to access
my FTP server.

Pismo Replacement LCD

2003-03-29 Thread Matt Dudek
Hi, I have a G3 Pismo with a broken LCD. I'm too poor to simply have
someone else repair it. So i cracked it open and removed the LCD, but
now I need to put a new one in it.

The Pismo shipped in two revs. the first rev shipped with the Samsung
LT141X7-124, and the second rev. shipped with the LG.Philips LP141XA.
In checking with a friend who had to replace his LCD in his Pismo he
said that the connections for the Samsung, and the LG.Philips looked
identical, but I'm afraid that the voltages would be different or there
would be some other reason I couldnt replace my samsung LCD with the LG
LCD.

In short, can I;

1. replace my Samsung LCD with the LG display?

2. or does anyone know another LCD I can replace it with?

3. does anyone know a place to buy a Samsung LCD for under $200 (ebay
doesnt haveit, i checked.)

Thanks in advance for any help,
Matt Dudek
