Kernel panics on 12 PBook

2003-11-09 Thread Tom Burke
Yesterday I experienced a run of kernel panics on my 12 PB. After the
first panic occurred I was unable to reboot successfully - 4 or 5
successive reboot attempts all resulted in another panic during the
reboot.

I dug out the Diagnostics disk and booted from that. I got confused by
the patterns that appear for the Video RAM check - the first couple of
times I though this was a symptom of another crash - and I
force-rebooted out of the diagnostics once or twice. However, I got a
feeling that perhaps there was a problem with memory so I took out the
512Mb RAM module, ran the tests again with a base 128 Mbyte system and
everything passed. Then I re-inserted the 512 Mb memory module, re-ran
the tests, and once again everything was OK. Next step was a boot into
single-user mode to run fsck, which also came up OK - no problems
revealed. Finally a full reboot into normal mode was successful, and
it's been OK since then, with a couple of reboots, and at least one
'wake from sleep'.

There no new hardware or software that might have triggered the panics;
the system has not been changed since I installed the 10.2.8 upgrade a
few weeks ago. I've had the Powerbook some three months or maybe a bit
longer.

So basically the position is that I had a very unstable system -
unusable, in fact - which I seem to have remedied by re-seating a RAM
module ( which was bought with the PB from a UK Apple Centre). This is
a common issue on Windows PCs of course, but it's not one I've heard
much mention of in the Mac world, esp. not with new Powerbooks. Have
others on the list encountered this sort of thing?

Basically trying to find a single desktop Mac running OS 9.2.2 that

is running my Pismo and the airport connection sees the internet just
fine via the ABS modem. I set this rig up and it worked just fine

eventually dope it out. Nonetheless, the feedback from this thread
makes me wonder if things aren't working quite right.
Have attempted to mount via the browser with the desktop's IP
address, no joy, not even a wait. Appletalk is enabled via Airport on
the pismo. Guess I should check if it is working in the opposite
direction. Mounting via afp://thismachine. is accomplished how?
This is under a Panther clean install with one update. Kind of bummed
as networking was supposed to be a no brainer with the new OS.
Did you try to go through the Network browser? Open a new Finder window,
change presentation to columns (CMD-3), then click Network at the top of
the sidebar. Do you see a folder named Local? If so, click on it. If your
network is setup properly, you should see all AppleShare servers there. I'm
not sure, though, if those AppleShare servers have to have server over IP
address enabled when running OS 9.
If you don't see the Local folder, then there is a problem on your
machine...

Most Efficient Battery Use

2003-11-09 Thread Sean Penney
Hello all,

I've just purchased a new 17 PB, my first laptop, and I'm wondering
how do I most efficiently use the battery?
* always leave the AC plugged in when possible?
* always use the battery power and drain the battery down to 1% then
recharge?

If any of you can point me to a good url where these issues are
discussed, you can post it here or e-mail me directly.

Don't know if the AC adapter from MacResQ will work, but you might
take a
look on their website. The extra I got for my TiBook was about $50 (got
tired of carrying the adapter from home to work to home to work)

It appears that the cord/cable that goes from the wall to my yo yo

has a break in it right near the adapter end. Tonight I noticed that

pretty
little bright white light that flashes about a half inch from the
round
cable end.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good source for one of
these? I'm
presuming that it is possible to just by the cable, not the whole
power
adapter.

If, as it sounds, it is the AC power cable that died, you can buy
those at many electrical supply outlets. I had the same power cord
go bad and the replacement was only about 2 dollars. Also, the
cord is the same as on MILLIONS of dell ac adapters, so failing
other fixes, you might be able to find a dead or surplus Dell
power adapter and just keep the power cord.

MAC Re: Strange Keyboard Problme

2003-11-09 Thread James G (Jim) Hardwick
20031109
I'm using a Lombard Bronze PowerBook, 400 mz with 196 kb of Ram. Intermit
tingly, the x, s, w, 2, and Tab keys stop working. Not stuck, just pressing
the key gets no response. For awhile, just restarting the Mac fixed the
problem. Now, only taking out the keyboard out, flexing it gently and
putting it back in fixes the problem. The keys then work for a few minutes
and then the problem emerges again.

As a former Duo 210 owner, this brings back bad memories. Apple
replaced my keyboard 4 times at their cost, once several years after
warranty period.
