Re: iMovie stalling

2003-12-07 Thread Thomas Ethen
A quick question about iMovie and a Pismo!

Why would my 500Mhz Pismo not be able to process video from my Sony digital
cam corder without stalling, but my 400Mhz Pismo processes it just fine? It
seems to work just the same in both 10 and 9.2 using iMovie 2. Both HD's are
4200rpm drives.

Yummy! Did they give you any idea on the price for the new one? I'll
be in
the market for a chip upgrade early next year, after I pop in a new
hard
drive.
Dang, why is the Pismo getting so much loving on the G3 speed market
when us Lombard users are stuck deciding between a G3/500 and G4/500.

Well, first, I have had both types of Wallstreets apart. On the
Wallstreet I, there are "solder pads" for vram, but no chips present. I
saw no evidence of "slots."

Second, the bus speeds of the two types of main logic boards are
different. Don't know what would happen if you interchanged the two
processor/logic boards, but I doubt the results would be pleasant.

Wallstreet CPU and VRAM questions

2003-12-07 Thread Andrew Kershaw
This site says the
Wallstreet (Wallstreet I) has a VRAM slot (look in the "mach" gestalt
section). Is that true? Where is it, if so? I assume it's on the
bottom of the motherboard, since it's not visible anywhere under the
keyboard area. Is it possible to install more VRAM by swapping out
whatever might already be installed?

Also, what would happen if I took the 292MHz CPU out of my Wallstreet
I and put it in my 233MHz Wallstreet II? I've heard that they are
supposed to be incompatible... Can anyone explain to me exactly _why_
they are incompatible?

Peace,
Drew

Japanese encoding in Mail

2003-12-07 Thread Jonathan R. Andrew
Once in a while I have the necessity of sending ISO-2022 (Japanese
encoded) text via email, but have recently found that the software I
currently use does not support it. I used to have no problem doing
this in Eudora, but I use the "free" mode in its latest incarnation.
Apple's Mail has no place to set encoding, and Entourage (I know, I
know) is having SMTP issues with my server which do not let it send
out (I have never loaded it until needing to send Japanese).

I am running:

G3 333 Lombard, OS 10.2.8, 384 MB RAM

Anybody have a solution?

Thanks,

-jra

I hope that Apple can squeeze a G5 into a PowerBook. If they can do so,
it would be in another 6-12 months. This is based on a turnaround time
simliar to the G3 and the G4 migration from the desktop to the laptop.
When I see an Apple product announcement, I'll get just as excited. :-)
But until then, it's just a rumor, and there's really no point in talking

Okay, you do know about the harddisk and the sleep sensor issue.
Actually, I don't know if it applies to the Lombard, it does apply to
the Wallstreet. I have an IBM/Hitachi harddisk in my Wallstreet.
The magnetics in it will sometimes keep the magnetic sensor that is
located near it from sensing that you have opened the lid. It thinks
the lid is still closed so it stays asleep. First thing to try, put
it to sleep using the menu command and don't close the lid. If it
always wakes from this it could be the problem.

There is a fix to this by shielding the drive with mu metal. I've
opted for a simpler approach. If the computer doesn't wake I tilt it
up or turn it around while tapping the shift key. My theory is that
the magnetic sensor is right on the edge and moving the computer
around changes effect of the earth's magnetic field on the sensor.

FWIW, give it a try.
