Timing my first Mac purchase

2004-03-12 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

Hello all

I am currently planning to buy a 15" PB to replace my 4 year old
Dell Inspiron. I am trying to figure out how to time this purchase so
that I don't buy a Powerbook only to have a newer model come out a later (which is what happened to me with the
Dell).

While I understand that there are no guarantees and Apple doesn't
tell people when they are releasing new hardware, are there guidelines
that I should consider (i.e. "Apple generally releases new hardware in
")??

I have seen some speculation about G5 PBs this year, but that
seems really optimistic IMO (not that MO counts for much). It seems worth
the wait to get the G5 since my current computer is still working
acceptably... but then I wonder about things like the first round of new
hardware and the potential for problems with them in general, battery
life, the fact that VirtualPC (which I will need for a few pieces of
proprietary software) doesn't yet work on the G5 (but hopefully will
soon?).

Anyway, I am just looking for any advice folks might be able to
give.

TjL

Re: OS Upgrade

2004-03-12 Thread Eddie
I bought a refurbisged G4 from Apple a about a month ago. It came with
10.2 installed, but also included a Panther upgrade disk and iLife 04.

If you got it from somebody else your mileage may vary.

From one bi-lingual admin to another, I can tell you with a bit of
coaxing,
it is possible. Two of the simplest ways are using Remote Desktop
Connections and Microsoft Telnet Services.

with most of them so that you don't have to have clear text
authentication for ftp either.

Telnet services can be installed on WinXP. You can execute an insecure
telnet right from OS X Terminal. This gives you command prompt
interface to
WinXP. It is very powerful, if you can remember the commands you need!
Remote Desktop is available on XP as well. I use that quite a bit to
control my desktop PC over our VPN connection as well

RDC gives you a full gui interface to the WinXP box. There are a few
shortcomings, but it works. If you need instructions on how to set things
up, email me off-list. The Mac RDC client is available on the MS website:

I administer a Windows 2000 domain (Active Directory) so my office computer
is a PC, but as a mobile user, my Ti is my best friend :) and I can work on
almost everything using these two services.

Good luck,

Re: Administering a PC Box from a Powerbook

2004-03-12 Thread Steve Fuller

Sorry for the long winded explanation. I'm just wondering if I buy a
PC and put it on the same network as the powerbook, can I administer
the PC from my powerbook over the wire (for example, install SDK's,
reboot, etc)?
On the Windows Server (2000, or 2003) make sure that you install
Terminal Services, and set it up in Administration mode. Then, download
the Microsoft RDP Client for OS X and install it on your laptop. You
can connect to the server just like you were sitting at the console
with a keyboard and a mouse. I use this to administer a number of
machines at my office over a VPN connection and I've never had any
problems. Between that, and being able to send files to shared drives
over samba, you should be set.

Hope this helps

Administering a PC Box from a Powerbook

2004-03-12 Thread Billy Bacon
Hi,

I'm wondering if this is possible.

Reasoning:
I have a G4 Powerbook running Panther. I've been developing this .NET web site and got
through the first phase of development with running Virtual PC on my powerbook and
then installing MSSql Server 2000 on Virtual PC running WinXP. Yes, what a nightmare.
It's very slow and lately it's been crashing a lot when I try to transfer/copy files
from my Mac hard drive over to the WinXP side while working in the WinXP/VPC
window/environment.

So what I'm planning on doing is buying a cheap PC (just the box, no monitor or
keyboard/mouse) which will act as a server for the .NET web site. I'd still like to do
my development on the powerbook but if I have this server on the same network, i
should be able to move files to the server from my powerbook fairly easy (from what
I've read). This is not possible with Virtual PC. With VPC I have to try to copy files
while working in the WinXP enironment and this causes Explorer to crash quite often
and I can't take it anymore.

Sorry for the long winded explanation. I'm just wondering if I buy a PC and put it on
the same network as the powerbook, can I administer the PC from my powerbook over the
wire (for example, install SDK's, reboot, etc)?

Thanks for any direction.

Hi Michael, those are two different systems, not an upgrade. Call your
selling company and ask if there is a chance to get 10.3 at a reduced
price.

Not all are the same. I have a MacAlly (sp?) card that works fine with
the OS9 usb drivers.

attach a USB hub to which a printer and scanner are attached and
working?
