Re: Wallstreet PRAM Hack.......

2004-09-15 Thread BDavis
Dan K... Thanks very much for the advise on the PRAM batteries.

You're correct... the individual cells at the price quoted aren't a
cheap fix. And it may be like that of the main battery Li-ion cells...
that it almost makes more sense to go the new route. That way there may
be some warranty where as the 'cheap-fix' offers little to none.

I don't think I'm jumping to conclusions here with the batt. problems
but maybe there's something else wrong and I should have prefaced my
questions to the group with more symptoms first.

The main batt. IS 'flat' ..or Zero voltage on the copper stips. Test
button shows no sign of charge. Before, (when I had some battery power)
it held only the shortest charge.. say 10 min. But the lightening bolt
was being shown in the battery icon. Then one day I noticed that all
four lights were lit on the battery when I plugged up the AC and
thought ah.. full charge. I unplugged AC and it shut down immediately.
(It had already begun to loose Day/Date.) After powering back up I
noticed that the battery icon showed Full charge but no lights lit when
the test button was pushed. I removed the AC and instant shutdown.
Now as I power up with AC the batt. icon will first show either and Xed
out Batt. or Low/No charge.. but after a few minutes the icon shows a
Full battery (but we know it's dead). Sometimes ..with the batt. in, it
shows it Xed or Lo/No.. it's inconsistent. That seemed strange.

Another strange thing happens when I plug the AC into the back. There's
a 'little' chime.. the sleep light blinks once then what sounds like
the fan or maybe hard drive beginning to spin up whirrrs then goes
quiet. Then it seems like it takes longer than before these problems
arose to chime (for real) then boot.

Sorry to go on for so long(!) but maybe there's something more than
just dead batteries involved and that maybe this might be typical of PC
board (Power Manager?) problems. Sound familiar to anyone???

I'm enjoying the conversations about sleep vs. shut-down mode. In
Nashville we have frequent lightening storms and two or three power
outages throughout the year. And when/if there's any warning all my
computers are shut down and the plugs pulled.

Regards... Bill

For example, I've been told numberous times that OS X does its maintenance
in the wee hours. Unless you get into CRON or use a utility such as Onyx,
you're apparently bound for trouble if oyu turn your machine off.

Re: Shutting down PBs at night

2004-09-15 Thread Marcin Wichary
Just as a thought on this, I'm not in electronics that much but I've
read a
few times that turning electronic equipment off is sometimes more
stressful
when you turn them back on because the current that is suddenly
applied to
the circuits. Don't ask me to explain or elaborate, it's just what
I've read
and heard a few times...
This has been posted very recently posted on the iMac LEM list:
It has basis in the days of vacuum tubes. It has to do with the
Tungsten filaments used in the CRT type monitors. Tungsten has a
positive temperature coefficient of resistance; the cold resistance
being about a third of that at the operating temperature. So when you
turn on a CRT from cold, three times the current flows through the
filament until it heats up. The theory is: Multiple turn-ons stress
the filament and it can fail earlier than when it is allowed to run
hot (or reasonably warm) when not in use. (You may have noticed how
incandescent lamps sometimes burn-out at the time they are switched
on) There are ways to limit the initial inrush current to avoid this
kind of damage. With proper attention to design, this should not be an
issue with modern CRT based equipment. Nor should it have anything to
do with the LCD type monitors.
If anyone's interested more in this, look in the iMac list archive
(topic called "Sleep," beginning of September) -- I assume that it's
publicly available?

Yes, GUIs are quite nice. Of course with a commandline utility you can

OS X makes things nice for GUI and commandline folks. Always nice to

FWIW this debate has raged on endlessly in many different places.
Some folks leave theirs on all the time, others unplug them when they
aren't using them, others are somewhere in between.

There are arguments to be made for any. I think other than turning the
screen off (not just dimmed but off) there are reasons to believe one
over the other.

Personally I hate the length of time it takes to cold boot OS X. I
leave mine sleeping, but often it is plugged into a 450 APC UPS
overnight, so I'm not as concerned about the power flux problems. We
lived in Florida for 5 years and just about everything except the
microwave was on a UPS due to the major power storms.

Leaving a machine sleeping is leaving it in a very limited "on" state.
Meaning that the power management circuits are charged all the time. For
example, in my 17" Powerbook that would leave the Backup Battery Board, the
DC in Board, the Bluetooth module, and to a certain extent the Logic Board
constantly under power. I don't want to risk having to replace any one of
these parts if the unit gets surged or one wears out more quickly from the
constant stream of electricity. Whether or not you know or believe this it's
true; unless you have some special regulator installed at your house (and
I'll bet none of you do), your electricity is constantly spiking and dipping
slightly. This is normal. Ask any electrician. Personally, I use a Belkin
UPS that has AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) to clean up the power coming
into my house from the utility pole. Things like refrigerators and
televisions are much more tolerant of line spikes than computers. I have
seen a house get surged and nothing was damaged but the iMac, and even
things plugged into the same power strip are fine...but the iMac couldn't
handle the rapid and drastic change in voltage. I also like to have my
memory heap dumped and temp files unloaded, so I use Macjanitor religiously
for clean-ups.

Apple's stance on the topic is that it's fine to leave your unit on
24/7/365. That's because when your machine breaks you will spend more money
at Apple and buy a new one. Apple also considers the Lifetime of a computer
to be about 18 months, after that they expect you to upgrade. So they
build their machines to last 2-3 years as a minimum. That way if something
breaks you will (most likely) be outside of your 1-year warranty period and
if you paid more money then your Applecare Protection Plan will cover you
for a total of 3 years from the purchase date. And I highly recommend an
APP on any powerbook. I bought it myself for my own book. Parts are just
too pricey for PB's.

What it really comes down to is this: My first powerbook was a PB100. I
have had PB's throughout the last 17 years, and aside from a faulty PMU in
my Wallstreet (common and well documented problem at Apple) I have had
absolutely no problem with any of them doing things the way I do things. I
sleep my PB when I am not going to be using it for up to about 6 hours...if
the span is going to be longer than that I shut it down. I also shut it down
every night and put it in it's Brenthaven bag to prevent dust from getting
into it and I regularly open it and clean it. You can do things the way you
feel is best, but for example, there is an article in the KBase that
attributes constant sleeping to problems with the Pismo series.

Check out the oft-mentioned xlr8yourmac Database under Drive Compatibility,
then your model of iBook and Combo (drive type).

IIRC the iBooks used a Toshiba drive, so may be best to look for one of
those. Though it wasn't the original model (as it's newer and faster), the
SD-R2512 comes to mind, as I've seen it on ebay in Europe for approx. 50-60
Euro new, on ebay in the US I think it's around $75 from legit sellers.
Check xlr8yourmac for this and other Toshiba models, and don't forget to see
how they did with swapping the Bezel from the original drive onto the new
one.

Good luck.
Chris

Re: Shutting down PBs at night

2004-09-15 Thread Tom Ethen
Since I live in the Midwest and we have electrical storms quite often, I see
no reason to tempt fate by leaving my laptop on or even plugged in when not
in use. I sometime let them sleep when I travel so I can access the laptop
quickly when I need to, but even then I turn it off more often than not.

Pismo Battery Won't Charge

2004-09-15 Thread Charles Estabrooks
The yoyo adapter on my Pismo recently broke at the connector to the
book. Toward the end I had to wiggle the skinny wire to make contact,
but instead of the standard icon with the lightening bolt which
indicates battery charging, OS X shows a battery icon with an
electrical plug, and the battery never seemed to take a charge. It
remains always at 0%. I bought a replacement on the Swap list (one of
the black kind), with no change. I zapped the PRAM, pressed the reset
button on the back, and even went through the Open Firmware reset
procedure, but I get no battery charging. I even booted into OS9 to
see if it was an OS thing, but no difference. Is it possible I burned
something out using the bad adapter, or is there a way to reset this
battery charging thing?

Thanks,
Charles
