I found this problem on both a Lombard and a Pismo, when I installed a 3rd
party Combo CD-RW/DVD in place of the original DVD reader. The problem was
that the Combo wasn't set to Master.

I would personally think it's the RAM. When the processor is bad or not
seated properly, you usually don't get any chime at all. If you can, try to
remove the top RAM chip on the processor daughtercard. Do you know how much
RAM was in the machine and whether 3rd party RAM was added?

Adaptec UDF Volume Access, with supports those newer standards, is

You

relatively slow system bus. For a few hundred dollars than what you
would
pay for a G4 upgrade, you could probably find a faster iBook that will
more
easily support OS X.
Unless there's any sentimental attachment to the machine, Laurent's
advice is very sound. A 500MHz G4 upgrade, the fastest available for
the Wallstreet, will cost you upwards of $300 -- and it still won't
enable you to run OS X particularly well. Add to that the cost of
upgrading the RAM (256MB is about the minimum), and you're already more
than a third of the way towards getting a brand-new iBook, with
wireless networking, a processor more than twice as fast, probably 5-8
times the hard disk space, a vastly better video card, and full support
for current and future versions of OS X. Even an older iBook, say
500-700MHz, would be much faster in OS X than an upgraded Wallstreet --
and probably wouldn't cost much more than $350, either.

That said, a Wallstreet can be a worthwhile OS X machine for some
purposes (mainly office applications like e-mail, web browsing, word
processing, and so forth). The 266MHz processor is fine, and as long as
you've got at least 256MB RAM (and a hard drive large enough to store
OS X -- about 1GB plus 1GB or so for swapfiles and temporary usage --
and your applications and documents), you should be set. A 300MHz
processor card goes for twice as much as a 266MHz on eBay, so it's
probably not really worth it for the hypothetical 10% speed boost. Note
also that most 266MHz cards can be overclocked to at least 300MHz
without much effort, although there is some soldering required.

Cheers,
Ben

Officially, 10.2.8 (AKA Jaguar) is the highest you can put in a Wallstreet.
However, many Wallstreet owners have been able to put the most recent OS X
release using XPostFacto, with varying degrees of success...

I agree with Nancy that it takes an unusual force to seat it properly, much
more than what you would expect for such fragile electronic parts. Make
sure, as Nancy suggests, that most of your force goes on the lower right
corner as this is where the connector is.

Well, David, after all the tests you performed and the verifications you

itself. Although, when the daughtercard is not seated properly, what you
usually get is no chime, nothing, except the caps lock key and the num key

code monkey n.: 1. A person only capable of grinding out code, but unable to
perform the higher-primate tasks of software architecture, analysis, and
design. Mildly insulting. Often applied to the most junior people on a
programming team. 2. Anyone who writes code for a living; a programmer. 3. A
self-deprecating way of denying responsibility for a management decision, or
of complaining about having to live with such decisions. As in "Don't ask me
why we need to write a compiler in COBOL, I'm just a code monkey."

Re: Wallstreet and UDF

2004-11-07 Thread George Mogiljansky
My experience with a Series II is that the Panther
installer chokes , i.e. the video goes haywire a few
minutes before the end on the install. I reboot and
Panther seems to work, but some programs do not work
or are not installed, e.g. Stuffit, Safari (but the
app and alias in the dock are both present).
Luckily, Mozilla installed (so I can still use the
Net) and Preview (the pdf reader app). Prefs are
accessible.

I used XPostFacto without the special video setting
(thanks to Ben Dyer) for Wallstreet. With the special
setting I could not install Panther at all.
Best
George
