Misbehaving PowerBook G4 400MHz...
I recently bought a cheap (dropped and dented) PB G4 TiBook with a non-working DVD drive, but it ran fine with OS X installed. I then installed OS 9 onto it through FW disk mode and now it's all gone a bit wrong. It won't regognize any System folder on the harddisk, not even the previously working OS X folder, and when starting up from a FW CD it won't see the harddisk anymore. Holding down Option on bootup shows the harddisk with an OS 9 icon (no OS X), flashes the first disk-? for a few seconds, goes over to OS 9 grey startup screen then shows the OS 9 disk-? and stays there. 1. How can I get it to start up from the OS X folder, or rather switch it to see that folder first. Remember the internal optical doesn't work and starting up from an external CD doesn't show the harddrive... :o( Larry _ Don't just search. Find. Re: Rebuilt batteries calibration.
Laurent, I had a Pismo battery rebuilt. It was not necessary to recalibrate; mine automatically did it over 5 or 6 recharge cycles; Pismo would just continue to operate long after indicating zero; next charge would show a longer time until it stabilised. However the charge LEDs no longer function; small loss. Did you do this rebuilding yourself or have it done? Id love to rebuild my own Pismo batteries and any info you've got would be appreciated. A month ago, I rebuilt two Lombard batteries. I used 2400mAh lithium-ion cells (maybe 50% more capacity than the stock Panasonic cells Apple used?). They also seem to have lower internal resistance, so that I'm able to run about 4.5 hours on one battery, without any power saving measures (screen on full brightness, HD spinning, some moderate CPU usage). I found them at www.batteryspace.com. The raw cells are priced quite affordably--in the end, I spent about $150 rebuilding the two batteries. How much does one new battery cost? I used Apple's Battery Reset after booting in OS 9 to reset the batteries' circuitry. The LEDs work fine. I have a third battery that I removed all but three cells from. It holds enough charge to power the Lombard for about 1 minute while on, but perhaps several days while in sleep. I leave this in the laptop, and it shaves a few pounds off my back on the way to and from the office. I keep my new hi-capacity batteries in the fridge and use them while traveling. Put the RAM back where it was. It very likely doesn't like one of the modules in the 'wrong' slot. Also do alt-apple - O - F just after the BONG and when you get a DOS-like screen type 'reset-nvram' then hit return. Can also type 'reset-all' instead. Or, better still, throw the damn thing away. Re: Tiger Release
Im eager to try it out, since Im having a problem with Mail not able to receive email to my domain address. And I HATE using Web Mail (which Im doing now). Im hoping that Tiger will fix this. If it doesnt, Im going to have to change domain hosts for the second time in a month. So Ill be an early adopter. I may install it first on an external FireWire 800 drive to test it out first, though. Is anyone using an inexpensive domain host and not having problems getting domain email in Mail? Re: Should I Consider Buying G4 Titanium
Al my Ti 400 has had no hinge (or paint) problems. It gets lugged around with me on the road a few times a week and probably runs about 8 hours a day on average. Bought it new so that was what, four years ago?
