Re: Tiger speed on older machines, was Re: Wallstreet & Tiger

2005-05-16 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Actually I reformatted and performed a clean install (via FW target
mode, sorry, not SCSI mode): it is not the slower that Panther,
but I have to say that the previous configuration was the result of 3
years of upgrades and software installations, so I guess a clean
install of 10.3 could do better...

PS. I managed to install Tiger to the iBook G3 via SCSI disk mode:
it is pretty slow but usable.
Was Panther on the iBook before Tiger? If so, is Tiger slower than
Panther had been?

I'm wondering whether to upgrade some older iMacs currently running Panther,

Combo drive noise

2005-05-16 Thread Brian
My dad just got a G4 iBook (800 mHz), and there seems to be a small,
but annoying issue:
When i inserted the Tiger DVD to upgrade it, the drive spun up, but
very loudly. Like a buzz saw loud. Is this a known issue? Is it
correctable at home here, since I don't think this machine has a
warranty?

Chris, you can. Sign up for a free efax number. Whoever faxes you,
using a fax machine via phone of course, using your efax telephone
number, will actually be *emailing* you the fax as an attachment.
If you choose a free number it will be an out of town area code. I

Perhaps a silly question, dan, but where do you "Sign up for a free

I'm wondering whether to upgrade some older iMacs currently running
Panther, and I've heard Tiger runs faster than (or at least as fast as)
Panther, so this would be feasible. Once we upgrade, I prefer that the
systems we support (father's, elderly friend's from church) also be
upgraded to the same OS as it makes support over the phone much easier
to do!

cdr

2005-05-16 Thread Robert Williams
I have a Wall Street running OS 9.2. When I try to
burn a disk using the Apple Disk Burning software I
get a messege that this disk is unreadable and it ask
me ti initialize it. It only gives me the option of a
Pro dos format and then tells me that it is locked.

How can a brand new blank disk be locked. My previous
Mac was an old Quadra 610, so this is a little new to
me. It has a CD r drive installed. It's a Matshia CD
Rom drive number 174 model, revision AD 11. Apple
disk burning is supported.

Am I missing something here. I need some way of
backing up files on this. Can this problem be fixed?
I would love to burn CD's of some of my Photo's.

I can do the internet and run a Bible Program with my
old Quadra. It just won't do digital photography.

Thank You,

Scott

WS is not supported for panther too! but I managed to install it with XPF
Try, as soon as it is available the version that installs Tiger, with

I'm not positively sure but based on my previous experience with the
replacement of a PC card cage on an older Wallstreet, if I recall correctly,
the PC card cage was only that, the mechanical aspect. I don't remember that
there was any printed circuit board with it. It was connected to the
motherboard with a special connection, so I would think that if any damage
has been caused it would be to some chips on the motherboard, unfortunately,
and short of replacing the whole motherboard, I'm not sure what you could
do...

Remember that I did this repair a couple of years ago so I could be wrong...

PC Card cage

2005-05-16 Thread John Slavin
I stuck a usb camera in a USB PC card in my Wallstreet II's card slot.
Now my PCcard slot doesn't seem to want to work. Specifically, my
wireless card is not longer recognized. I'm afraid I've blown
something on the PC card slot mechanism. Is that likely to be a
failure of the PC Card mechanism or something on the motherboard
itself? If it's the mechanism, does anyone know if the mechanism off a
Wallstreet one will work on a Wallstreet II? Just out of curiosity how
about other parts, like a 14 inch screen, a keyboard, the problematic
power board, etc. I assume the 12' panel won't work as it's passive
matrix and the 13 inch wouldn't because it was never supported on the
Wallstreet II. Am I correct? There surely are some interchangeable
parts.

Reasons that Appletalk can't be activated?

2005-05-16 Thread Pace
Was:Re: farallon iPrint on Pismo OS 10.3.4 & laserWriter4/600
--
I am on a Pismo G3/400, running OS 10.3.4
When I go into the system prefs & click on
Print & fax, the printer is not there to select
& can't find it. So I searched online
& it said make sure appletalk is turned on.
So, when I go to sys prefs/network
& click on the "show" button the
select built-in ethernet
then select appletalk, I checked the box to
make appletalk active, but when I go
to setup a printer it still says
"unable to turn appletalk on
printer not available because appletalk not active.
To make appletalk active open network prefs
& click on the appletalk tab then select the
"make appletalk active" checkbox.
when I go back to that, it is selected!
I read online that OS X is installed
with appletalk deactivated.
& also that only one port can have it activated.
I have checked those things!
I am trying to use a Farallon
Ethernet iPrint adapter
so that I can still use my old
Apple LaserWriter 4/600ps.
Does anyone have a clue why Appletalk can't
be activated?
Later, Kim
