10.4.1 was released about two weeks after 10.4 in order to fix a

10.4.1 is out and 10.4.2 is rumored to be out soon.

Tiger on a Dual-USB iBook

2005-06-10 Thread bobgir2004
I have a G3, 500Mhz, iBook running 10.3.9., 640Mb of ram

It's considerably slower, naturally, than my G5 iMac running Tiger.

Has anyone installed Tiger on this generation of iBook and, if so, does
it run faster, slower, or about the same as Panther?

If there's no speed improvement, then I'll just leave this one where it
is, with 10.3.9.

Many thanks,

Clamshell CD-Rom problems

2005-06-10 Thread Jim Katz
My wife's original blue clamshell iBook just went wonky, suddenly deciding
it does not have an airport card and unable to access the CD-Rom drive,
which spins up but does not read. Booting is also unreliable. The Apple
tech says I have to buy a new CD-Rom before anything else can be done as it
is defective. USB only on this machine, no firewire. My questions: Is
there any workaround to boot from an external HD or something like that with
this machine? Any other way to load a new system besides the internal
CD-Rom drive? In other words, any way to avoid many $100s of expense?

Thanks,

Jim

I'm sorry, Jim, but I don't think there is any other way around it. You

What you could do would be to pull the hard drive and put it into an
external USB or FireWire enclosure. Then, use another Mac to install a

I would also imagine that you should be able to find a CD-ROM replacement

Good advice, Van. Personally, I would take the plunge for the replacement
drive. Might not be very convenient to pull the drive everytime you need to
install or fix something on it when the laptop can't boot. Plus, if you do
that a few times, you risk breaking something inside the Lombard, which
would be unfortunate...

To add to Gene's question, whats a good card that works under X and 9 ?

Also, when I put the Orinoco card in my WS while running 9, it shows

Re: Clamshell CD-Rom problems

2005-06-10 Thread Jim Katz
Oh well, the decision seems to have been taken out of my hands. Did manage
to reinstall the system - probably with the workaround suggested, but then
discovered the logic board is also not working. I don't understand how it
happened - she put it to sleep unplugged it - carried it (carefully) down a
flight of stairs, and woke it up at the bottom. Suddenly no internet, no
CD-Rom. I guess there is no chance to fix this all within a reasonable
budget. What new model do you recommend for someone who loved her original
model clamshell to death?

Like another subscriber replied, DVD playback is not supported on the
Lombard in OS X.

You could try VLC and see what kind of performance you get. Check on
versiontracker.com.

code police n.: [by analogy with George Orwell's `thought police'] A
mythical team of Gestapo-like storm troopers that might burst into one's
office and arrest one for violating programming style rules. May be used
either seriously, to underline a claim that a particular style violation is
dangerous, or ironically, to suggest that the practice under discussion is
condemned mainly by anal-retentive weenies. Dike out that goto or the code
police will get you! The ironic usage is perhaps more common.

Re: DVD.app error

2005-06-10 Thread Rad Craig
OSX isn't supposed to run on Wallstreets either, but many people do
run it successfully. According to Apples specs, it (Lombard) is
designed to support OSX:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43120

Not Tiger, because of the firewire, but still.

That message seemed like some kind of configuration error, like
perhaps there might be a file that I can edit?

My Lombard came with DVD drive in it, when I bought it used. My
Pismo has a DVD and it works fine, I didn't think there was that much
of a difference between the two other than the firewire.

It can't be fixed, the Lombard DVD playback doesn't work on any
version of OS X.

Re: Wi-fi card for OS X on Wallstreet?

2005-06-10 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Also, when I put the Orinoco card in my WS while running 9, it shows
up as an Airport card. Will the airport software be just fine with
this card ?

Yes, indeed they are the same thing: have a look at my page on this topic:
