I remember when I had all sorts of issues with mine. All those kinds

One person suggested now might be the time to take advantage of

upgraded because of the type of video card, or so the good doctors at

Re: iBook and high speed internet and cable splitter

2005-11-30 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Besides looking for a splitter that isn't cheap, you
should know that most digital setups now want to run
with splitters that will transfer at 1ghz... Go
splitter shopping and tell me how many 1ghz splitters
you find.

You CAN find them, but your general run of the mill
splitters that you pick up at walmart and whatnot are
usually 800mhz.

Cable internet and digital cable do not like running
through an 800mhz splitter.

Spend the extra effort looking for a 1ghz splitter and
your results will be rewarded. I know Best Buy
carries them, but they also carry the 800mhz variety
as well (and quite a lot of them). You'll notice that
the 1ghz splitters are usually quite a bit mroe money
as well (ie ~$1.50 for a cheap splitter and more like
~$12.00 for a quality 1ghz one.)

Nope. Worked with a 14 WS II with the same issues with video.
Video problems went away with Panther installed. The memory issue
has to do with processor limitations. My old processor on the WSI

Daystar (or any other rework shop) has a harder time upgrading the
WS1 CPUs as the L2 cache parts are BGA, while the WS2 L2 cache parts
are quad flat (easier to rework). Find a cheap WS2 233/512K l2 CPU

If everything is plugged in, and you have a grounded outlet that is

your house ground, and the static shoul follow that route from the

True of older models, but my new PowerBook (purchased in July of this year)
has a genuine case ground. If you just plug in the white power brick, you only
have two prongs, but if you use the longer cord you get the case ground as
well. So touching your PowerBook's case and discharging won't cause damage if
you're plugged in with the cord.

That said, static is deadly to modern silicon chips with their very small
device dimensions. A person can easily build up a static charge of several
kilovolts, and while the amount of energy is small, when it's focused in a
small area, it can easily destroy the nanometer scale components on ICs.
Somewhere here I have an old HP magazine that has scanning electron micrographs
of transistor junctions destroyed by static - before and after images. Once
they are damaged the chip is useless. We were running a new Van de Graff
generator in the technician's shop about a year ago and ended up destroying the
MoBo on a nearby computer. The Van de Graff generator we had builds up about
200,000 volts, and the compyter was only 4 or 5 feet away, and something in it
got damaged. We are more careful with them now.

I looked at the cord when I got my AL--and noticed that while there
was 3 prongs on the wall side, there was only 2 connectors on the PS
side. I didn't see where the cord would make a grounding connection.

True of older models, but my new PowerBook (purchased in July of this year)
has a genuine case ground. If you just plug in the white power brick, you
only have two prongs, but if you use the longer cord you get the case ground
as well. So touching your PowerBook's case and discharging won't cause damage
if you're plugged in with the cord.

That said, static is deadly to modern silicon chips with their very small
device dimensions. A person can easily build up a static charge of several
kilovolts, and while the amount of energy is small, when it's focused in a
small area, it can easily destroy the nanometer scale components on ICs.
Somewhere here I have an old HP magazine that has scanning electron
micrographs of transistor junctions destroyed by static - before and after
images. Once they are damaged the chip is useless. We were running a new Van
de Graff generator in the technician's shop about a year ago and ended up
destroying the MoBo on a nearby computer. The Van de Graff generator we had
builds up about 200,000 volts, and the compyter was only 4 or 5 feet away,
and something in it got damaged. We are more careful with them now.

Re: WSII won't see RAM in top slot

2005-11-30 Thread James Sanderson
Interesting idea. Does a WS II CPU work on a WS I? I upgraded the
processor to the 292MHz limit after I bought the machine 'cause 233
was just too slwww.

What's BGA?

WS on Jaguar

I remember when I had all sorts of issues with mine. All those
kinds problems went away with the upgrade to Panther. With the
comp not recognising the RAM, that's probably to do with the
processor.
One person suggested now might be the time to take advantage of
Daystar's G4 upgrade. That's a good idea depending on the age of
the WS. Mine was among the first made, evidently and could not be
upgraded because of the type of video card, or so the good doctors
at Daystar told me. Because this one is a WS II, I doubt there
would be any problem.

Jim Sanderson

Daystar (or any other rework shop) has a harder time upgrading the
WS1 CPUs as the L2 cache parts are BGA, while the WS2 L2 cache
parts are quad flat (easier to rework). Find a cheap WS2 233/512K
l2 CPU card on ebay and send that in for upgrade.

It's happened to me and I get a slight shock. Power supply is plugged

to forget.

If everything is plugged in, and you have a grounded outlet that is
really grounded (only one in my house is), and Apple has done things
right, then I'd think you'd ground thru the case, out the cord, to
your house ground, and the static shoul follow that route from the
case and all should be isolated from the sensitive bits.

Too much of the case is plastic (even some of the metal). Even if
it is metal it may not have a good connection to the power jack. And
if the power supply has the two prong connector on it there is NO
ground connection.

Even in a desktop computer with a good ground and all you can have
trouble. I knew a guy who had a Mac II that would restart sometimes
when he touched the keyboard. The static caused a surge somewhere in
the keyboard and triggered the restart.

It is far better to discharge the static before you touch the
computer. Touch some bare metal on the surge strip for example.

Unplug the cord connector from the PS. There are metal tabs inside
the slot that engage the metal nub (for utter lack of a better term)
on the power supply that holds the connector in place.

I have a stock Ti 400; bought it new and put it through heavy use with
absolutely no problems... no hinge or paint issues. It's been mobile
almost every day of the week but I do treat it with tender care at all
times. I've been thinking about a new computer but this Ti has been so
good to me, rather than replace it, I might get a larger hard drive for
it and purchase a new iMac (my mobil needs will be much less starting in
