Efficient algorithms are SUCH a tiny part of programming todays applications that it's not even funny. Blaming it on incompetence is merely the lazy way out...software is a LOT more complex today than it was in the day...if you don't think so, feel free to go back to using an Apple II for your day to day use, and see how far you get. Me, I'm glad we have the BFH programs of today...they let me do *my* job more efficiently, which is vastly more important than letting my computer do it's job more efficiently. Buying more hardware to do that is not even a problem. Hardware is cheap and amortizable. Human capital isn't. This isn't an excuse for sloppy programming or feature creep, both of which are huge factors in why Office is now 300MB instead of 300KB, but there's also the fact that 300MB today costs a fraction of what 300K did then. Re: Wegener Media
And, as far as relevant questions: What can anyone tell me about Wegener Media and the service they provide? I purchased a used Lombard from them a couple of years ago. It arrived with some non-working keys on the keyboard. I exchanged it for another keyboard which also had non-working keys. The third time they got it right, but each exchange took at least a month. I had to conclude that either they were incredibly slipshod (how hard is it to check out a keyboard?) or they knowingly sent me defective merchandise and were hoping I wouldn't keep after them to correct the problem. Hmm. I worked on the project that put SPSS together. Cards. Stacks of cards. Hated keying those cards; probably two bad ones for every one that came out right. Big IBM 360/67 in a building the size of gymnasium. One day, I loaded a stack in, went into the snack bar, put in change for a coke, pushed the button and the whole bloody system crashed. I was almost convinced I'd caused it. When the system was up again, at least a week later, all our data was interspersed with data from the Stanford Hospital... Sat through hours of classes in Fortran IV. The project finally moved on to the University of Chicago; I was invited to go, too, but then I watched the riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention and decided that was one of the last places I wanted to go. Wegener, himself, filed a statement with false claims with a Listmom, claiming, in turn, that my claims were false, and resulting in me getting banned from a List. It's almost as if Wegener is a relative of Karl Rove, as Wegener's bullying (and lying) techniques are similar to Rove's. I believe, based upon first-hand experience, that it is Wegener, himself, not Wegener Media's employees which is the problem. Wegener likely has bullied his employees, too, much as he's bullied his customers. In Wegener Media's defense, I did have ONE transaction which went OK. But, this transaction was processed without Wegener's interference. I'm 100 percent satisfied with Wegener Media transactions which do not involve Wegener, himself; and 100 percent dissatisfied with Wegener Media transactions which do involve Wegener, himself. Just another data point on the continuum of good and bad experiences. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Bluetooth Q
I've got a bluetooth question for someone knowledgeable. I am using a G4 Ti book. I'd like to have a better voip connection with Skype and go 'wireless' . So I have been contemplating acquiring a bluetooth headset and bluetooth USB adapter. My question is this. Most of the bluetooth earpieces out there are bluetooth Version 1, which gives a 33' distance, but there are some bluetooth V. 2 adapters out there that work at 66'. So if the V2 adapter is transmitting at 66', will the V.1 earpiece work at that distance or be limited to 33'? Not to confuse Bluetooth version with USB versions. I suppose the V.2 earpieces won't be long before introduction so I could wait, but the price is right now for V.1 earpieces. The other variable I may have is that I only have USB 1.1 on my book, unless I use a USB 2.0 Cardbus (which I have) and plug into that. So not sure if I may get a bottleneck with the factory usb speed but that's another issue. TIA Dave -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Yeah - that was intended to Dave off list... my apologies to the list. Now I'll crawl into my cave.
