Re: Safari problem ?

2005-12-12 Thread David Harris

Hi Amber:

I've noticed that Safari support has improved overall. But there are
times when it just doesn't get the results that I need. Much of it
has to do with the designs of the web pages, which may or may not
have an effect upon what you are trying to do.

However, Apple has an interest gem in the Debug menu. Quit Safari
and open Terminal (Library > Application Support) and type in the
following:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu1
and press return.

Relaunching Safari gives you a new menu choice, Debug. It has a
plethora of cool functions. Select in the Debug menu User Agent, and
you can choose from a list of browsers, which includes Microsoft
Internet Explorer 6.0 (MSIE). Keep in mind that you are not using
MSIE, but allowing Safari to receive certain information that would
only be exchanged if the web browser "identifies" itself as MSIE.

If you implement this option, it may prove two things. If it does
work when Safari identifies itself as another browser, it will prove
that eBay's web design is not too Mac friendly. If it doesn't work,
then Safari may need some modifications that may come in the future
or you should consider not checking the box to keep you logged in.

If you change your mind about the Debug menu, quit Safari, open
Terminal and type the following:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu0
and press return.

Relaunch Safari, and the Debug menu should be gone.

Good luck.

If you are using smtpauth.earthlink.net, check Mail> Preferences>

If you can, try and chat with an Earthlink support person. I lost

I Finally Decided

2005-09-05 Thread David Harris

Hi:

I apologize for the length of this E-mail.

I was on the fence for a while with my 700 Mhz G3 iBook. It had a
broken R-11 unit (where the telephone jack locks in), which I let
happen through negligence (I left it on the bed plugged into the
telephone jack and my other half walked by and pulled it out. The
R-11 jack still worked but I had to be careful the telephone cable
didn't slip out. I had Airport card in it, so I did not need to fix it.

This situation gnawed at me. I wasn't even sure that repair on the
R-11 jack was possible. I heard it was part of the logic board and
would require a complete replacement. Finally, fate helped me
decide. I sold my Dell laptop with USB CD-R/DVD-ROM for financial
reasons. I called a local Apple consultant and after one day's
research, he indicated that the R-11 jack was indeed separate from
the logic board and would run an estimate for repairs. But why stop
there, I thought. The iBook had a CD-ROM drive. The hassle I would
have to install Tiger made me decide to get a combo drive. Along
with a complete servicing and changing of worn screws and completely
replaced plastic feet (I purchased this iBook used through a company
I cannot find, BuyMicro.com), the final bill was $530.35. I have a
90-day warranty for parts and labor.

Whew More expensive then a Mac Mini, I know, but it is kind of
strange. I'm glad I repaired the 700 Mhz G3 iBook. It lets me be
able to put Tiger on her and sell my 900 Mhz G3 iBook with a combo
drive that I hardly use, as it is slightly heavier.

David,

If your iBook only have USB like I suspect, then you won't be able to
boot
in FireWire target disk mode. If I'm wrong, then you reboot your iBook
and
then press the 'T' key immediately until you see the FireWire logo on
the
screen. Then, you just connect both iBook with a FireWire cable.
Again, I'm
not sure that the 700MHz has FireWire, so what I've just explained
might be

a moot point...

You might have to contact Apple to get Tiger on CDs. I think there is a
small fee for that. You should be able to find more information about
this

on the Apple web site.

Re: iBook Problems

2004-04-17 Thread David Harris
On Apr 16, 2004, at 11:47 PM, John wrote:
Sorry, I don't buy the "hinge" explanation. If that was the case, why
is that people can hook an external monitor up when they first start
having problems, and have the same symptoms appear there? Since I
happen to have one of the listed (700 mhz Icebook) machines, I have
done extensive research on this on the Apple discussion boards, and
the real issue seems to be with the video chip. This chip is located
underneath the lower left "hand rest" area, right where it gets all
the heat from the hard drive. If you've ever noticed, that area can
get extremely hot! And as we all know, electronic components don't
like heat. This excess heat is also the explanation for another common
problem with iBooks: hard drive failures. I believe the cooling system
in these could have been designed better. Most of the folks that have
had video failures, have also noticed that they never hear the cooling
fan coming on. And yes, considering how many iBooks that Apple has
sold, it's safe to say that the majority have not had problems. I
bought mine second-hand (out of warranty), and other than the drive
dying a week after I got it, I have no complaints. Like they say, it's
the squeaky wheel that gets the attention. However, if I had to do it
again, I would have bought one with a warranty, just for the peace of
mind. But I would STILL get an iBook!

JR

"Powered by Mac OS X Panther!"

I agree. I noticed that heat does build up on my rebuilt iBook 700mHz
and on the new 900 mHz iBook I bought in April 2003.

What about the designs of the new(er) iBook G4 configuration? Is the
motherboard configuration the same? If they are the same, then why is
it not happening to them as well?

Maybe they purchased the video chips from a different supplier.

And I do so like my 12' iBooks.

Hi:

Was wondering whether I should install a 512Mb memory in my 900 mHz
iBook. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Battery issue

2003-09-21 Thread David Harris
Hi:

I have an iBook 900mHz and 700mHz. Why is it that the 700mHz shows 3:50 when fully
charged while the 900mHz always shows 2:50?

The 700mHz iBook has 128Mb built in memory, 512Mb sodimm memory added. It was
purchased in April 2003 as a refurbished iBook.

The 900mHz iBook has 128Mb built in memory, 128Mb sodimm memory added with an Airport
card. This one was purchased new in May 2003.

Any assitance or further information would be greatly appreciated.
