Firewire Drive for Backup - Recommendations

2004-09-02 Thread G Harris
I'm looking for recommendations for a new firewire
drive, and for OSX-compatible backup software.

Here's my situation:

2 networked Macs - ibook G3 with OS 10.2, and
old Powermac 7100, OS 8

I'd like to buy the firewire drive for the ibook, and
do a full backup of the older mac (which I'll
eventually replace).

Any comments on the best hardware / software?

Tutorials for learning Unix on OS X?

2004-06-23 Thread G Harris
Does anyone know of good beginner's tutorials
(websites, books) for using Unix on the Mac.

In particular I'd like to learn about common commands,
navigation, permissions, installing applications, etc.

Has anyone used X11?

(I'm using a G3 iBook with OS 10.2)

Re: DVD Screen Capture OS X

2004-02-23 Thread G Harris
Downloaded it and tested, it works fine. I'm using OS
10.2, but I'll be upgrading to 10.3 pretty soon.

 DVD Capture:

 works
with the standard Apple DVD Player v3.2

I've used it a number of times under OS 10.2, as you
 haven't said
which version of X you're using. The web page states
 its been updated
 for Panther compatibility.

Upgrading from OS 10.2 to Panther

2004-02-13 Thread G Harris
I just purchased a G3 14 iBook with OS 10.2, and a CD
for upgrading to 10.3.

Are there precautions I should take prior to
upgrading, any unexpected surprises? I've had the
machine for less than a week so there's nothing
irreplaceable.

I read that there were some nasty surprises for people
who had firewire drives, but I don't have any
peripherals (yet).

Buying an iBook

2004-01-16 Thread G Harris
Hello,

I'm new to the list and ready to buy my first ibook.

My home computer is an old 7100 machine with system
8.5. It is networked with a Windows machine so I'll
need an ethernet connection.

I primarily want to run Filemaker and Flash MX, as
well as general word processing.

Has anyone used Powermax? They have a number of
machines for under $1000 -
