can't boot off disk?

2005-11-25 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer

Greetings Listers,

My Wife's G3 iBook 800 (dual USB) has died (as I've told her it
eventually would!), but I'm not sure how or why.

Booting it up slowly brings us to the question-mark folder-icon. I've
run the hardware check disc that came with the iBook and everything
checks out fine. When I attempt to start off a system CD I get the
slash-circle icon, it does not see the system CD (I tried both the
Tiger CD and an old Jaguar one, I no longer have the Panther CD). I
also tried to start it in FW target mode from my PowerBook 1.25, but
nothing happened- iBook whirred a bit, no screen, no disc showing up
on the Powerbook finder.

I'd recently installed Tiger onto the iBook, on top of Panther. Tiger
worked OK but slow (256 MB RAM) for a couple of days before this
problem.

So I figure the HD is dead, buut why can't it boot off a system CD?!

Thanks!
Matthew of the BeerBook

Panther and Menu bar icons

2003-11-22 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer

I solved the problem of the missing menu bar icons! With the help of a guy
named Michael on the Apple discussions, here is the solution if you are
having issues with your menu bar icons:

In /Users/yourname/Library/Caches, delete everything
In /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences, delete
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
In /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost, delete
com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal)
numeric string.

Then log out and back in again.

Panther and menu bar

2003-11-21 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
 Hi folks,

I just installed Panther on my TiBook, and now the menu bar is
 screwed up.
The menus on the left side are fine, but all the little app icons on
 the
right side (airport, clock, volume, etc) are now gone! They flicker on
occasionally for a second, but are completely unuseable. I installed
 the
 recent Panther update, no change.

Did you install or had installed if you did an update, any non-Apple
 utility
that is displaying something in the menu bar?

Well, I have a similar problem after an Archive/Install. They flicker
(they are still there, but the graphics are messed up).

I did have MenuCalendar and WeatherPop, but then I trashed those and
rebooted a couple of times, the problem persists. Could there be any legacy
bits from those apps that I need to remove?

This is pi***ing me off! Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Matthew

Treo As IrDA Modem?

2003-02-10 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hi listers,

I was trying to use my Handspring Treo as an IrDA modem for my Powerbook 550
this weekend, with no luck. I run Jaguar, and there's lots of IrDA modem
options in the System Prefs Network Panel, but nothing specific for the
Treo.

Does anyone have experience/suggestions? I realize the connection would be
slow, but it could be a super option for when one is in need of a connection
away from it all.

Thanks,
Matthew

CF Adapter

2002-12-04 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Ian,

I have a Compact Flash PC Card adapter I use regularly, and I love it. I got
it when I owned a Wallstreet 250, now use it with my Titanium 550
(beerbook). Mainly I use it to upload pics from my Digicam, faster than
serial or USB. But I can also use it as a small drive interchangable with
other laptops with PC slots.

I bought the adapter on eBay, probably $8 or so.

-Matthew

Hi Guys

I read the article on the web page and wanted to ask if there are any
users here using a Compact Flash car in the PC slot in their Pismo (or
other) powerbook?

Has anyone set the virtual memory of OS X.2.2 to use the CD card?

What do you guys use the drive for?

Thanks,
Ian

Beerbook Part II

I had a beer spill on my Titanium a couple of weeks ago that these listers
are tired of hearing about... Bt...

The spills aren't covered by warranty, and I had to have my logic board

NYC where we've got Tekserve. A very expensive spill for me, sounds like you
might be a bit better off, but I'd ship it to service if I were you.

Powerbook opinion

2002-11-25 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hello,

I use a Powerbook G4 550, and my fiancee uses an iBook, so I've compared
them quite a bit. The newer Powerbooks do not have an irda port, but mine
does, and I love it, especially for synching to my handheld while on the
road, no need to drag around extra cradles and cords. I also cannot
overstate the usefulness of the cardbus slot, which gives great
expandability to the Powerbook. The iBook has neither irda nor cardbus.

Beerbook

2002-11-22 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hi folks,

Thanks for your responses about my spill issue. Paul was right, I could've
probably saved the Tibook if I'd been quick about removing the battery, my
instincts were incorrect.

Just in case you want follow-up info, the tech from Tekserve called back
today. He did two severe alcohol washes on it, and still no response (it
won't start at all) so he's replacing the logic board. They can charge only
about $530 for the board, because they send my ruined one to Apple in some
sort of parts exchange. I asked him (Marty, very nice guy for anyone in NYC)
if, as long as he's replacing my whole logic board, I could upgrade and get
a faster processor, better graphics, etc. He said that's theoretically
possible, but then they can't do the part switch with Apple and it would
cost much more.

Live and learn, eh?

G4 spill damage

2002-11-21 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hi Listers,

Well, while ripping my bartender's CDs to my Powerbook 550 I spilled some
beer on the keyboard. Tekserve has cleaned it up and says the logic board
must be replaced to the tune of over $600. Wow, expensive beer. Tekserve has
been very helpful, but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with this
sort of thing (logic board replacement, not beer spillage) and has advice;
such as finding cheaper parts, etc.

Thanks much,

Titanium IrDA

2002-10-30 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Listers,

I¹ve been using my PB G4 550 for several months, no problems. I upgraded to
Jaguar a month or so ago, still good. A week ago I sync my new Handspring
Treo to my Titanium via IrDA, all good. Problem is that ever since that
sync, my IrDA won't turn off. The icon in the menu bar flashes constantly,
as if looking for another IrDA device. When I go to the IrDA menu to shut it
off, it won¹t.

Any ideas? This problem does not affect the PB¹s functionality, but I figure
it¹s bad for battery life.

Thanks!

Yes, you can sync a Visor to Entourage, using Palm Desktop 4. Check out the
