Re: what to get first?

2005-05-02 Thread Matthew Faulds
Hi
RAM will make the biggest difference in my experience. Also, if Panther
works well for you you may avoid some headaches waiting for a bit - it may
not make your system any better and upgrading can cause time consuming
issues when it doesn't go smoothly.

Having said that, Tiger is on its way to me now..

Hi all! I have a G3 iBook just bought from a friend. It has 256 MB of
SDRAM and system 10.3.9 installed. I am thinking about getting more RAM (I
can have up to 640 on this iBook) but I am intrigued by the new system,
Tiger, given all that I have read about it. I really can only afford one or
the other right now; what would you get first?

I agree with this. I have been using Tiger for a few weeks now and I have
some issues with a couple of things.
Plus, if you depend on Cisco VPN, you're out of luck right now because the
latest version of the Cisco VPN client is not compatible with Tiger yet.
They said they would have a new, compatible version in May but there is no
telling when...

Re: Ditching OS 9

2005-04-30 Thread Matthew Faulds
Slightly off topic but I have a clamshell ibook that I tried to rid of OS9.
The alias for the OS9 Applications folder will not go, even after some
terminal commands that were mentioned on http://www.macosxhints.com/

I wonder if it may be harder to remove all traces of OS9 than simply
dragging the folder to the trash?

Tiger on a clamshell

2005-04-14 Thread Matthew Faulds
There was mention of someone having seen Tiger on a Pismo - has any one seen
it running on a clamshell? We've got a 466.

I also note that the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 in my G4 iBook isn't on the
Core Image capable graphics card list on the Apple site. The same card is in
the Mac Mini. Does anyone know if this means we'd get much poorer graphics
performance?

Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-13 Thread Matthew Faulds
After some initial problems with batteries we bought a new battery for 466
clamshell ibook and we get somewhere around 4- 4 1/2 hours use with airport.
If watching a DVD you get full film plus about an hour. That is running
latest version of Panther mind you. Watch out for funny battery problems
when updating OS!

I reckon it's worth getting a new battery just for the lack of hassle. Ours
is BTI (Battery Tech)

My Reply follows quote. On 08/04/2005 22:23 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:
Okay, I got the airport card for my clamshell, love it to death and
enjoy being completely wire-free. However I noticed with the airport
card, the battery life is seriously diminished. If I plan on using it
without the power cord for any reason for a long time, I'll turn the
screen brightness down and turn the sound off. that doesn't seem to
make a huge difference, but it makes a little bit of one. It says it
will work for like close to 2 hours. Does the battery need replacing
or is this average for an older laptop? I noticed it gets down to a
certain level with the battery displaying in red and then *boom* it
shuts down and goes into sleep mode til I plug it back in.

Any solutions or ideas? Should I just get a new battery?

Andrea~

Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better
than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think
you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless.
