Re: Airport in iBook--OPTION-S restart?!

2004-06-01 Thread Ted
Will never see the setup assistant, unless he or she launches it him
or
herself. Has nothing to do with the card being recognized. Sounds
like a
bad card, OR an improperly seated card.

How can I tell if the card is improperly seated?
I plugged it in the wire and have it under the keyboard and under the
hold down wire.

I did try the Option S, but that made no difference.

What is a Lombard DVD card?

2004-05-17 Thread Ted Mann
I have a 333 Mhz Lombard and when I recently upgraded
the CD-ROM drive to a DVD drive, I found that it
actually played DVD movies. Cool! Subsequently, I
noticed that in the Apple System Profiler, it states
that there is a DVD card present.

My question is this: Is this DVD card a part of the
motherboard? Or is it a separate component hidden in
the bowels of my machine that could conceivably be
transferred to another Lombard?

Re: What is a Lombard DVD card?

2004-05-17 Thread Ted Mann

Normally a 333 Lombard requires a DVD decoder card
that is inserted into the PC Card slot in order for a
DVD to play if you have a DVD drive.

It might be that you have a 400 Lombard that has a 333
CPU replacing the orignal 400 CPU. The 400 had the
decoder hardware on the motherboard.

Have you checked the label on the bottom of the case
to see which model you have?

J
-

reply:

John,

Hmm...that is kind of weird. Apple system profiler
says that the processor is a 333Mhz, and the lower
case is marked as such. However, I bought the Lombard
from an eBay seller, who said that she had needed to
have some work done on it. Maybe they replaced the
motherboard.

Anyways, thanks for the info.

Lombard is acting flaky. PMU malfunction?

2004-05-13 Thread Ted Mann
Lombard acting flaky; PMU problems?

Hello! I have a problem with my Lombard and wondered
if anyone had any advice.

It has been acting flaky over the past week or so
after a loose screw in the case caused it to short
out. (Yes, that was really dumb of me…)

It will boot up just fine after pushing the rear reset
button. If I “shut down” the computer, it will then
allow me to boot up again. But, if I try do a
“restart” command, the computer will just shut down
and then not do anything. I have to push the rear
reset button again to get it to boot up. I’ve already
tried the “hold-the-reset-button-for-30-seconds” trick
to reset the power manager.

Does this sound like a PMU malfunction? I’m not an
electronics expert, so my only means of “testing” a
component is to swap it out and see if the problem
goes away. So before I start investing money in
replacement parts, I thought I’d see if anyone had any
ideas about what might be wrong. I know that the PRAM
battery is shot, so I’ll probably be replacing that
sometime anyways.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Also, does anyone have a spare Lombard keyboard they'd
be interested in selling for cheap?

Ted

I think that I fried my Lombard

2004-05-11 Thread Ted Mann
Hello! I think that I just fried something in my
Lombard...

I have recently done some minor upgrades to my
Lombard. I put in more RAM, swapped in a larger HD and
upgraded the OS to Panther. I had thought in the last
few days that I MIGHT have heard something rattling in
there, but I whenever I'd recheck, I didn't hear it.
So...I assumed that it was okay.

Well, last night, as I was working with it on my lap,
there was a loud pop, and the computer froze up.
Shortly thereafter, I smelled something like burnt
plastic. After reopening the computer and removing
almost everything, I found a small loose metal piece
in the case under the hard drive.

Now, I can't boot up from the hard drive. If I reset
the PMU, I can get the computer to boot up from the
Mac OS Install CD; the hard drive will show up on the
desktop and all of my files (thankfully) appear. But
then when I try to set the hard drive as the startup
disk, it will only get as far as the startup sound. No
startup screen appears at all. Using Disk First Aid
didn't help, so I assume that it isn't the hard drive,
but rather something on the motherboard.

So any ideas on what I did? How can I figure out which
component is at fault?

Thanks,

Wallstreet G3 System??

2002-09-24 Thread Ted Burford

I have a Wallstreet 266 mhz. I bought Photoshop Elements to use on it,
but it looks like I have to have System 9.1 to use Photoshop Elements.
So I tried to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.2 or 9.1. The CDs would not let me
do that.

What system choices do I have? Can I run OS X??

Re: Wallstreet CDRW

2002-09-06 Thread Ted Burford

The UIJDA-330 and the UJDA-710 is Combo DVD/CDRW. You won't need the DVD
on the Wallstreet unless you have the decoder card. I've seen 330s go for
  about $85 on eBay.

Well I bought this one;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2049372953

and it does not fit into my 266 mhz Wallstreet.

Does any one know what it will fit? I need to sell it to someone.

Take a look at this eBay store - they sell most of them.

Is there another place? That seller has a high negative feedback.

It can be done. You won't damage it. The directions with photos are at

USB and Wallstreet

2002-08-29 Thread Ted Burford

I bought a Macally brand USB card for my Wallstreet 266 mhz.

I downloaded the software for it and installed it. The wallstreet
crashes every time after it looks at the card or drive attached to it.

Any ideas?

Re: Expansion Bay Device carrying cases

 Ted,

I can vouch for these zippered carrying cases for zip CD drives, etc., I
 have three from MCE Technologies:

Are these soft cases or hard plastic? Can I get two drives into one?

Wallstreet Cards

2002-08-10 Thread Ted Burford

I would like to know more about the cards that go into the left side
card slot on my Wallstreet PB. I have a DVD card in there now. I would
like to be able to read the Smart Media Card for my digital camera. I
have a USB Smart Media Card reader now for my Beige G3 tower. Should I
get a USB card for the PB, or a Smart Media Card. Where is the best
place to get these cards?

Thanks, Ted

G3 Powerbook

2002-05-11 Thread Ted Burford

I am interested in getting a used G3 Powerbook, but I do not know what
model to look for.

I would want one that would have room for a lot of RAM, (enough to run
Photoshop) have a CD R and disk drive. What model should I look for?
