Hi all,
My Wallstreet 1 does not see my battery anymore. No matter which side I insert it on, the battery menu in my menu bar (OS X 10.2.8) says "no battery available". Does anyone know if this means the battery is dead and at fault, or is it one of the internal circuits?
I replaced the PMU a few months ago, as well as the backup battery to resurrect the computer. So the suspect circuit, i would guess, would be the "Charge Card, Power Supply 922-3359" as noted in the Apple take apart documents.
I also use the "magnet down the side of the display" trick to wake up the computer since I upgraded the hard disk (as mentioned on this list before, and is also described here: <http://homepage.mac.com/techedgeezine/cart_mac_pb2.html>).
reset-all in Open Firmware did not help.
Open Firmware on Wallstreet 1
I have to agree with previous posters that getting into Open Firmware on a Wallstreet 1 is very difficult. I *can* get it to happen, but I have to try many times. It works maybe once out of every dozen attempts. There must be a very small window of time when they keys need to be pressed. It seems to be just after the startup sound begins (not before) and not more than, say, a half second after it starts. At least that is my best guess, and even then it is hit or miss.
One interesting thing I found when Googling for Open Firmware information is that "alt-alt-O-F" was mentioned on one site instead of "Command-Option-O-F". Given that the Options keys are both sub-labeled "alt" I tried holding both Option keys and O and F. Did not work. BUT, when I use both Option keys, Command and O and F it seems to work better. So that's five keys held. Also, it seems to work better if the modifiers are held just before holding down the O and F keys. Makes the timing of the whole affair tricky.
I'm going to the Apple WWDC in a week. I'll try to corner Apple hardware folks on this Open Firmware issue. I remember that some of the core OS guys had Wallstreets from talking to them in past WWDC's. Hope they all still work for Apple.
