Actually only about 30% are fake addresses. Which bounce back to
me. 70% don't bounce back to me.

There's a difference between faking the from address, and BEING fake
addresses. For example, if a spammer sent out spam that looked like
it came from [EMAIL PROTECTED], then they have faked the from
address - but haven't used a fake address, as it is mine.

If then 1000 people decide to bounce that spam, it enters the inbox
of a genuine person being me. That 70% of emails don't bounce back to
you doesn't mean 70% are real addresses, as some domains have a
catchall - *ALL* mail going to them will enter someone's email
address, even if it's not a person on that machine.

Another danger of bouncing all email is that one day you'll start
bouncing email back to others who automatically bounce email as well,
setting up a loop that continually sends email between yourselves and
gradually gains in size the more fake email you get. Soon enough
you're bouncing megabytes and megabytes of email between one another
and wondering why email is slowing down.

Anybody can put anyone else's email address in the From: field of
emails they send out, even other people's genuine email addresses. A
spammer might send spam some day with a faked From:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (or other genuine email address you own). It would
be a faked address, but all bounces to those 6 million spams would
would go directly to you - just bouncing is a bad idea, and doesn't
hurt the spammers one little bit.

Same here, personal experience :). I have a catchall on all mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and daily there are often a dozen bounces from
spammers who have faked one of my addresses.

Bouncing spam certainly isn't causing a headache for spammers. On the
converse I'm sure it makes them happy, by spreading their spam
further for no effort! :).

I have a 512k ADSL connection.
I presume not a lot...
It'd affect you very little. you can do somewhere over 50,000 bytes a
second on 512k, so 64/50,000 is miniscule.

If you do want to spread pings out, and are OK with using the terminal,
you can open it and enter:

ping -i 300 www.apple.com
for example, which will ping apple.com at 300 second intervals. That's
only once every 5 minutes.

What else is or can be used as a heat sink? I never thought about this
before, just assuming that a fan to push hot air out the case was the
only way to dissipate the heat in a laptop. Are there other components
(literally something called a 'heat sink') that serve to handle the
heat?
Looking at the pics of a powerbook 15 disassembly on kodawarisan, the
bottom photos on http://www.kodawarisan.com/PowerBook/16.html show the
motherboard with the 3 hottest components in a row - the purple G4, the
large black chip (I can't remember its exact name) and the white ATI
graphics controller.

Looking over the page at http://www.kodawarisan.com/PowerBook/17.html
shows the heat pads that those chips physically touch - black/orange
for the G4, blue for the black chip, and green for the ATI controller.
they're connected to a metal band that transfers heat to the two
blowers either side of the case.

iBooks are a little similar, but they use chunkier looking heat pipes
to drag heat to the single fan at the back of the case :). There are
links to some other disassemblies on the main site,

I think so too. I don't find the current flat trackpad button

Hi!
I've got a very genereal question and I'd be very interested if anyone
has any thoughts about it.

Looking at my Pismo, I now find the Titanium PowerBook vintage appeal
starting to call me. These were troublesome in that they were easily
banged up, scratched, etc. Is the aluminum as vulnerable.
While I have no experience of machines I've owned, the problems with
TiBooks seemed related to the titanium showing through paint chips, and
the plastic (carbon fibre?) around the edge of the inside also showing
through damaged paint. No matter how badly scratched an AlBook gets, at
least the scratches are relatively the same colour :).

Does anyone suspect that Apple will settle with light metal,
specifically aluminum, from now on? Is there likely to be a new
industrial plastic or composite of some sort that will be more durable
and damage resistant?
With apple being as image oriented as they are I think the metallic
look will persist for a while yet. One more thing to differentiate them
from 'plain' old iBooks for most people

(although for me, the pure white glossy G3 iBooks were about the
loveliest looking laptops I've ever seen)
