I replaced my Pismo DVD with a Samsung SN-324B Slim Combo drive that writes CDs at 24x, rewrites at 10x, reads CDs at 24x and reads DVDs at 8x. It is bootable in 9 and 10 using the ALT key. Works perfectly with Toast. I hacked the iTunes plugin for 9 and it works great. Disk Burner support without hacked plugin, BUT I had problems mounting disks I burnt in Toast (message: This disk is unreadable...), which I solved by disabling the Apple CD/DVD extension and using Toast CD Reader 5. Now no problems mounting burnt CDs, but no Disk Burner support. Plays DVDs fine in 9 and 10. A great purchase on ebay at around $120. Check out xlr8yourmac for lots of other reports, including DVD-R/RW drives that work in Pismos. Look under Drive Compatibility Database, then Pismo and Expansion Bay. Prices tend to vary, but you should be able to find a Combo drive that works perfectly in the Pismo for around $100-120. Samsung, Matshita, Teac, etc., lots of different makes and models work great. The xlr8yourmac site also has illustrated takeapart and install guides to replace the original DVD mechanism. Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... DVD replacement
Hi, Like many others, the DVD drive on my Pismo has died. I'm looking for suggestions for replacement. DVD write-ability would be great but I'll settle for DVD play/CD read and write. I would also like it to be internal, rather than external. Are there replacements that fit into the module? Preferably plug and play - I would rather not have to take the faceplate off the old DVD drive and try to mount it on a new one.
