FireWire DVD-drive enclosures?

2004-11-06 Thread Mikael Byström

Any suggestions what brands for FireWire DVD-drive enclosures to look up?
I tried to google but mostly found harddrive enclosures only.
Are there any additional demands on a an enclosure when one fits a DVD
drive inside? I ask as I have an older enclosure that used to have a
harddrive in it, but it can also fit CD/DVD drive. Maybe I can use this
one. Unfortunately, I seem to not be able to find the the drive when I
have that in, but it could be the disk itself of course.

The only real difference between a HD case and a CD/DVD case is the hole in
the front. I usually buy my cases from OWC - check here:

These aren't the least expensive cases by any stretch of the imagination,
but I've never been happy with the cheaper models and/or the lack of service
other companies provided.

I just got one a few weeks ago for a DVD drive I had which is region-free. I
spotted it from eBay, checked it out, confirmed with the seller that it
could be used with a DVD drive, bided on it and won it. I think it was like
$15, with 2 FireWire ports and 1 USB 2.0 port. You just have to make sure
that they specifically say you can put a CD or DVD drive in it. Mine can be
used both for a DVD drive or hard drive. When using a hard drive, there is a
face plate that you put on, but not if you use it with a DVD drive. Of
course, the look will be better if your drive matches the color of the
enclosure. My enclosure is black while my DVD drive is beige, but that
doesn't bother me too much. I just want to watch non-Region 1 DVDs on my
PowerBook without having to switch the drive's region setting, specially
that after 5, it locks on whatever region you choose. Until someone comes
out with a region-free firmware for it, I'll use the external drive for
those DVDs. DVD Player works well with it.
