Thanks Patch,
I can't be sure that this was the quote - but maybe i remembered it differently, as I only skimmed through the original in my usual panic before traveling.

Nevermind, it is so dam close it will serve the purpose very well!

        Thanks again,
        Stuart.

Actually, reading the last line again does seem to be triggering some familiarity neurons.

Update; yes it was this quote, just googled it and ZDnet.com news had a story 'Bright ideas, big wait on tech payback' on 22nd March. To which I wish to refer in my thesis.

        Thanks Patch.

I am doing a thesis on intellectual property. Around the middle of
March, there was a story online about the high number of inventions
that don't make it. It had a quote from one of the big wigs at Intel
(may have been Gordon Moore) describing how one particular invention
succeeded more by accident than anything else. He commented something
to the effect that 'there must be many other inventions which don't
make it'
Does anybody recall this story? Possibly Newsweek, NYT, etc. I have
searched bookmarks, histories, online - can't find it.

I believe this may have been Andy Grove (Intel Chairman), who was referring to the development of the microprocessor:

"I think it gave Intel its future, and for the first 15 years we didn't
realize it," said Intel Chairman Andy Grove. "It has become Intel's
defining business area. But for...maybe the first 10 years, we looked
at it as a sideshow. It kind of makes you wonder how many sideshows
there are that never become anything more."
