Re: Lombard overheating?

2005-03-09 Thread Peter Saint James
As I understand it, despite being called "laptops," they want to run
on hard surfaces. To quote the manual to my Aluminum PB:

"Do not place your PowerBook on a pillow or other soft material when
it is on, as the material may block the airflow vents, in particular
the rear vents, and cause the computer to overheat."

I also gather that the bottom of the computer gets warm and the heat
can't escape when on such a soft surface.

Anything one can do to help the computer run cooler is virtuous and
leads to longer life for it. One solution might be to customize a
laptop stand to use on the bed, giving a little air space between the
laptop and the cloth surface.

Normally the exhaust fan then stops after a few minutes.

I suppose this is the computer's way of cooling itself when getting too
hot? My question is, is this a normal thing I can ignore, or is it a
warning to shut down for awhile?

Thanks Bruce. I was mostly worried that I was damaging the processor or
something. Will still try go minimize getting to the point that it gets
that hot, but at least now I won't panic about it.

Blankets are insulators. That's why we use 'em. On hard surface the
laptops feet keep it off the surface to allow air underneath, thus
keeping it cool without needing the fan.

The blanket (or your lap) allows the system to sink in and be
insulated, removing a lot of the normal convective cooling, so the
thermostat kicks in and the fan comes on. This is normal, but if it's
annoying, use a lapboard or some other hard surface to set the laptop
on instead of directly on the bed or your lap.

Sounds like exactly what I'd expect it to do - if it gets warm, the fan
comes on - something like bedding isn't a cooling surface, so I'd expect it
to come on more often than on a desk.

Having the same issue with my Wallstreet/250. I've also noticed since I
have had this laptop, that at times with prolonged use on my bed or lap I'll
start to get shadowing on the lcd..
For now I shut it down and let it cool. But being this is my only
computer for awhile.. That can't be the longterm fix.. Would getting one of
those laptop coolers that go underneath help the situation at all?
